great vid jill.shows how well she can use and control the power in her voice, that stripped back acoustic set up completely changes her persona

I think Florence has an amazing voice, the passion really shines through on a song like Cosmic Love. I'd much prefer to listen to the likes of Florence + The Machine on the radio than Cheryl Cole.

He never said that. I, while i don't agree with him, can understand his point. I don't think i've ever seen a funny woman comedian, i'd say there's one out there but as yet i ain't laughing. Oh, nearly forgot:rolleyes:

I listen to far more female solo artists/fronted bands than I do male.

She has potential to be great. Songs like Cosmic Love show there's something interesting about her, but the album overall is a bit of a bum note. It feels like it was rushed or something and could have been better. I got bored with it very quickly.

I kind of agree with that. I find the album kinda frustrating overall because of it, there's little bits and pieces of awesomeness, but it doesn't make the most of them. I enjoy the couple of singles - as overplayed as they are - and live, she's really something, but I wish the album was strong enough to do her justice.

Anyhoo, she did a cover of Beirut's very lovely Postcards From Italy a while back. I suspect it won't win her any new fans, but if you like either Florence or Beirut already it's a treat.

That cover came way too early after Candi Staton's radio re-release, really didn't see the point in it.

    .

maybe she has no more songs so she needs to stay in the news by doing some covers?

The whole thing just snowballed. It was originally just a b-side. It then got released as a digital download due to it's popularity. After that it got added to Lungs as a bonus track. And again its popularity led to a physical re-release. It's not her fault people liked her song.

Her early covers were all excellent. Her version of Cold War Kids 'Hospital Beds' is cracking imo.

Think she is very reliant on that voice and her sound. Some good songs but question is how long she can sustain it.

When you mentioned this, I decided to hunt it down, because despite being a bit on the fence about the album, I love her voice and that song. I'm actually surprised I was disappointed by it. It just seemed hollow.

I bought Lungs with high hopes, but it's really a (very) long road of mediocre filler with potholes of genius... Rabbit Heart, Cosmic Love and Howl I could listen to all day, but apart from that it all blends into one for me. In fact I find a few quite painful, Kiss with a Fist, Dog Days, You've Got the Love (harmonies sound wrong). Girl with One Eye is actually one of my least favourite songs full stop :p When Florence's voice works, it really works. Pity it doesn't stand up on most of the tracks. I haven't heard much of her on Phantom recently though? Thank God, Dog Days seems to have replaced by the brilliant Bubbles by Biffy Clyro :)

Surprised by that but fair enough. I much prefer Florences' version compared to CWKs original.

Excellent. Then it's agreed. Florence should hire a better songwriter and maybe do a few less overplayed covers.

Somebody send the telex, and we'll all go forward from here.

"waaaaaiilll *rob someones song and do a collaboration* Waaaaaillll somemore. "
Oh yes this is singing. not to mention when she hits the real HIGH notes! My god I can't stand her! she is the joe duffy of the music part of radio... an annoying noise that never seems to go away...

*mods note; not attacking joe duffy. Just good metaphor. Will edit if told to*

I have a problem with her You've Got The Love overplayed. It's my least favorite song from Lungs, mostly because it's the last one and the rest of the album is a masterpiece, then that cover comes on...It's pretty much the same song, she didn't do anything interesting with it except scream. At least the Dizzie version added a bit more.
It's not even part of the album it's a bonus song! Ah well, at least that 02 ad with Cosmic Love ALWAYS plays at the cinema, a much better song imho.

I have to say, I like Florence and the Machine. I got the album for the o/h around Christmas and we both thought it was a good album all round. Except for her cover of "You've Got the Love". I've heard quite a few people saying that is amazing. It isn't.

In my opinion, if you're doing a cover of a song you have to put your own mark on it by changing things around, not just re-release a carbon copy of the original. Where's the creativity there? You're literally just copying someone elses song. Why bother if it's not going to be any different from the original version?

Clearly we all need to attend her next Ireland gig and stage an intervention! :D

What's the big deal with Florence covering a song? You'd swear noone had covered a song before the way it's been received, yes it's been overplayed and yes it dosen't add anything else from the original but to hate her for this is ridiculous. The album is really, really good and the cover dosen't take anything away from the album, it not actually being on the album in the first place.

What some are objecting to was the remix of the cover which as someone else pointed out wasnt that big an improvement on the original to begin with.

It does take away from the album when I listen to it the whole way throUgh and I don't care if it's a bonus track it still comes on straight after the last song.

Covering a song is one thing, but remaking a bad song is more the problem I have. That aside I like the album.

I've just seen the heart being ripped out of one of my favourite songs ever :(

No one has really stated any hatred for her on this thread. However covering a popular song without putting any mark on it leads to believe that the artist feels they are not able to gain popularity and respect from their own music - which as I understand was not the case from some of her good songs and the reaction they got. hence there was no point in covering this song, it cheapens her brand and allows here record company to cash in on radio play.

I'm pretty sure she didn't even have a 'mark' to put on the song when she recorded it. The fact is, people like the song and that's why it's on the airwaves.

I haven't even heard the song since the Brits.

end all and be all. She covers a song and then releases a remix of the cover. This after just the one album.
    hardly inspires does it

after seeing florence live, i think it would change anyones opinion of her. she has such a powerful voice that i dont think is captured at all on her album, her voice is amazing and i love the type of music she writes, indie or whatver it is, but i think she would be also great singing blues? anyway have to say dog days and got the love are so overplayed, cant listen to those two songs, apart from them tho shes great

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Think her voice comes across much better on her recorded output than when she's live. She struggles at times while on stage imo.

I still really enjoyed her live shows and am pretty interested to see what she does next.
