just a word of warning about the s+w 617 , a friend has been refused a licence for one as the chief super reckons its a restricted firearm , we all know its not, but if my friend wants to prove him wrong he has and will have to take him to court to prove it.

just because its on the famous list don't be too sure you'll get a licence for it.

    Rowa is right.

I would be in the same boat as my Super refused me a revolver in .357 and also in .22lr "as the Gardai use/d revolvers

As I've said before the list and the guidelines are not worth the paper they are written on :(

    Hib,

Get a serial number, apply for your license - if you get it carry on - if refused then you can decide what to do next.

    617s have been licensed.

I plan on "plugging" the revolver if/when I get it, making it a five shot so hopefully it'll be ok. I'll be licensing it in Wexford where there are a few already so hopefully it will be ok. I'd prefer to get the 617 than the 87 to be honest.

What revovler did they refuse you bunny?

    S&W in .357

Ruger Single Six in .22lr/.22 WMR

    I'd love a revolver :(

I would not make, nor suggest, any alterations you are not asked to make.
It is on the list so simply apply for it.

If you are asked to plug it then you must or it becomes restricted and you have a different kettle of fish on your hands.

That sucks! I would love a 357, no chance now. I would be more than happy settling for the 22 S&W if I can get it.
I wonder did the magnum option on the ruger cause you any hassle? Not that they need any excuse to give shooters hassle!

The only reason I was going to that was the gards in my district have a nasty habbit of asking for all these little things one by one and about 2-3 months between each request/demand. I want to beat them to it and get my application dealt with quickly. At the moment I have a rifle renewal in for the last 8 months!
Its in the hands of the FPU now though who have promised to help with the whole situation.

Thats just the guards way of making sure you want the pistol and you are not getting one just to have one, as for wishing you had a .357 , a lot of people who have both rimfire and centrefire pistols (eg. me) find themselves using the rimfire a lot more than the c/f for a lot of reasons , expense being the main one and you can by rimfire ammo anywhere.

That wasn't for a pistol Rowa it was for the three guns Ive had for the past few years. I would be very happy with a 22 revovler if I can find one, but I guess I'll always wonder what the bigger calibres are like.

just a lot more noise and harder to shoot and more expensive to feed ,

Guess you have a point. You don't by any chance know of anyone wanting to part with a 22 revolver?
