Excessive Rust in New Car Engine Compartment

Our company recently bought 3 new Ford vehicles. All new 2010. Unfortunatly we never inspected them under the bonnet until after they were purchased. When we looked each vehicle has very serious signs of corrosion and rust. They look like they have been attacked with salt water. The Garage say that the best they will do is extend the warranty by a further year. Has anyone else experienced this? What options are available to us. The Consumer Association is only available to private customers not business...
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm afraid this could be as a result of lying around docks unsold for the last year or so. A lot of 2010 reg'd cars were probably built months ago and have been sitting idle since.

Is it surface rust on parts or the actual bodywork of the car? If it was parts I'd get them replaced and if its bodywork I'd try reject the car under the sale of goods act.

This is more suited to the main motoring section so I'll shift it over

Its mainly parts. Ill try and attach a picture to give an idea of what were talking about.

What kind of parts are rusty?

If its painted bodywork, I would be doing my best to return them all. If its just the odd metal engine mount etc, well its not an issue really.

    Independent assessor pronto.

Are you sure it's not just discolouration from water lying about?

Wouldnt you think by now Ford would have stopped making rust buckets. Any Ford I ever had rusted like hell, that included Transits, escorts and fiesta's. Even a 1 year old transit I had back in 2000 rusted like a sieve on the doors.

Hopefully the attachment is visible this time. I'm new to this Forum!!!

I have added some more pics to show more detail of the 2 vehicles

My 12 year old Fiesta doesn't look that rusty!

Once you explained it was not paint work I was going to say don't worry.

However after looking at your picture.... That's heavy rust for a 5 year old car let alone a new one........

    Something spilt over that engine.

At the bottom left of your picture is that a power steering pump ?

Either way the casing would have had a coating on it and should not be rusted like that.

I wouldn't be happy and would be taking them back.

Are they all like that, that's unreal, I was thinking you were probably overreacting about some rusty coloured water marks till I saw the pick :o

An extended warranty doesn't sound like it will be much use at all, if they won't fix an existing issue (the rust) then there's little reason to believe they will fix an future issues during the extended warranty either.

The bolts will all be rusted to feck and will be buggers to remove if required, not good enough, refund required is the line to take, get onto Ford Ireland if the dealer won't play ball.

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,273 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

    Thats unbelieveable.
I wouldnt be surprised if that got a dip in salt water at some stage. Thats not acceptable.
Id have a look under the vans. Get them on a lift. They could be completely rusted there too.
    Replacements required.

Yes they are with the 2 Transit connect vans worse than the Mondeo. I also inspected an unregistered Connect on the forecourt and it had rust as well. Whats the position with naming the Garage on this Forum if I don't get any satisfaction??? Sorry for asking what must be day to day questions here....

i would imagine there would be no harm in saying where they were bought but may be best to clarify with a mod.

Unbelieveable :eek: Your Mondeo pics seem to suggest a badly rusted bulkhead as well. If that is the case, water will be going through it in no time to the back of the dash and into the footwells  And if the bulkhead is rusted, things that are anchored to it in the engine compartment may start coming adrift...

OP have you managed to find out the year they were manufactured yet?

Unbelievable. Disgraceful. Assessor now as EPM said. Than onto Ford Ireland. Those cars should never have been sold as new cars. I'd expect a full refund plus compensation for time lost / expenses made etc. If an acceptable offer is not forthcoming, it's solicitor time.

You can get year and month of manufacture from the VIN:

Ford have had some commercials sitting in stock for over a year. There was serious discount to be had for anything in stock 365+ days, but I wouldn't have thought that applied to Connects, or a Mondeo.

That does look really bad, and I must check the Mondeo that's due to me today to see if that's the same. Car was a fresh order so is coming more or less straight from factory without sitting around in the rain.

Would love to know what caused that, possibly sitting at the docks for a long period of time, but you don't see that kind of corrosion in cars that live along the seafront...so what else?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,800 ✭✭✭voxpop

Couldnt be related to the recent flooding by any chance ? It'd take some neck to sell a car in that state as new.

  • Registered Users Posts: 554 ✭✭✭barryfitz

I agree with Voxpop. looks to me like those cars were partially submerged for a while.

You might be onto something there. If I'm reading this correctly 1 connect was Jan 2008 and the second was Feb 2008. The Mondeo seems to be Dec 2008. Might explain things a bit better.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,058 ✭✭✭rn

Either saltwater or a faulty anti-corrosion process at the factory for some of the engine parts. Thats pretty disgraceful for Ford. So much for a warranty from one of the well established manufacturers.

Ya as above you have a couple of options here I'd almost consider forwarding on a few pics of the rust to a local newspaper, but ya definitly goto ford ireland that's crazy!

Bloody 'ell! And the garage had no qualms selling these as 2010 cars. I'd be rejecting them pronto.

The rust you see is visible.....what about what you can't see?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

If these were PDI'd properly this should have been very noticable.

Tell the garage in no uncertain terms that you intend to reject the cars based on this. If they don't play ball, like I said, get them independently assessed. Forward this to garage and Ford.

I'd be very suprised if they didn't do something to remedy this to be honest...could be very damaging...

No rust on the new Mondeo that's just arrived so it's not affecting them all on the journey over.

Are these leased vehicles, and if so - are they much cheaper because the vehicles have been taken from stock.

If you (or your company) bought them from a Ford dealer - get them straight back there. If they were a lot cheaper than new models, then it may be more difficult to get anything done.

If they are leased vehicles, reject them straight away to your leasing company - unless they are costing you practically nothing.
