I am off to england with the car for a few days this weekend and I am sure I will visit one or two gun shops. Does anyone know what is the story with buying ammo in the uk, I know I can go north and buy it there!! Can I legally buy ammo in the uk if I have my licences with me and gring it home on the car ferry? or do i need forms and approvals etc etc.

You need an import license from the DOJ here and a visitors permit to transport the ammo while in the UK.

You need an import license from the DOJ available here. Click on the link for "firearms/ammunition import for individuals". Fill it in with the details of the firearms dealer you are importing from your personal details and a copy of the dealers license, your license (front and back). E-mail it all back to them at the address at the top of the form. You should recieve the license within 10 days. You then bring the license with you to the dealer along with the visitors day permit (available from the PSNI) to allow you to carry and possess the ammunition while in the North/UK.

Its all covered in this thread.

European firearms passport, you apply for one in the garda barracks. You need passport size photos and bring all your licences in and info of where you are going etc.

I just went on the net, printed off the first hunting place I found and the rest was history however its out of date and needs to be renewed.

Getting through an Airport, well that is another world all together lol
But worth it if you like to go on shooting holidays.

Before others say, thats for travelling to North UK or Europe with your firearm. Not for buying ammo.

........ do you need a Euro pass or something?.........

Just to clarify lads, a European Firearms pass is free, but does not constitute a firearms license. I know that may seem obvious , but i'm just clarifying for those that have never had one.

You apply for it in the Garda station as Tackleberry said. You simply ask for one and the FO will fill it in there and then and add whatever firearms you wish to it. You give in your photos and then the FO sends it upstairs to the Super for signing off on it. Once thats done you can collect it or they will send it out to you.

The Euro pass acts as a passport for your firearms and allows you to carry ammunition for those firearms, but only if you have a current license to accompany it. The Europass on its own will not suffice.
