Shotgun cartridges

Following on from the shotgun thread, I'm trying to learn more about the different loads. I know we had threads discussing the brands of cartridges; however, I'm interested in what load people use and for what.

I mostly shoot pideons and hare [when in season] so I use 32gr no5 and no
6s. Though recently I have just stuck to the no5 as its cheaper to buy a case of them. As I said on the other thread I got ten 50gr 00 just to try them out and see what the recoil is like.

So what load do you use and what do you use it on?

From another thread and to add a bit, most of my game shooting would be done with Super Express 36gr 5's. Great cartridge, ultra reliable (no misfires, ever), great killing power. I also use Eley Super game 32gr 6s for a few places i go as the distances are short and not a huge amount of killing power needed. For pigeons and other winged pests i use 28gr to 32gr 7.5 shells. Depends on cover and distance you are shooting.

chances are your a better shot than me, but i find the 7.5's a bit light for any game, i can't seem to put them down, only ever pickel them and we all know that's just not on, no problem with the 6's or 5's though

I had the same problem myself lad. My solution was to head down the bog with all my chokes and an armful of cardboard. I stuck up the boards at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 yds. I then fired a shot at each one and with different chokes in. I got an idea of the spread pattern of my cartridges. So now i know which cartridge to use in which scenario.

Thats why when going out i always have a slightly mixed belt of cartridges. So if i'm going for crow/pigeon shooting at 25-30 yds i bring the 28gr 7.5s and about 5-10 32gr 6s for that long/unexpected shot at a rabbit.

Its all about trial and error. Nobody hits everything all the time. At least not when just starting off or with a new gun/shell.

lol, only problem i have is my shotgun is a s/s aya, with fixed chokes, (full and 3/4 i think), but then again it could make it a bit easier, i'd only have to think about what shell to use and not what choke to use as well:rolleyes:

thanks for the advice though, i'm always pleasantly surprised by the amount of guy's willing to part with their hard earned experience:)
