The issue has got nothing to do with saving money, or being attached to a car for whatever reason, regardless if its a classic or not, or even if a car is expensive or not, or about safety better or worse.

Its about being condescending about someone elses car, ferrari or fiat. Thats just snobbery, its got nothing to with being passionate about cars.

I've no problem with anyone spending any amount of money on a car - €20k or €200k. But I think 'new cars' are just a waste of money. If I was spending €20K on a car, I certainly wouldn't be buying a brand new Focus or Golf. I'd be looking at something like Golf Gti or a powerful BMW a few years old. The first three years in a cars life has the worst depreciation.

Someone mentioned here about the warranty on a new car. Yes, but you're paying a few grand a year for this privilege. Nothing could go wrong with the car to justify this kind of money. New cars = waste of money.

I remember a couple of years ago when i had my 1999 Subaru legacy b4 twin turbo my mate thought i was 'mad' for getting an old car & not getting something new for the 12 grand i paid.

The point was i didn't want a 1000cc commute box, i wanted a proper animal of a car that i looked forward to driving.

I eventually had to sell it as the thing was a petrol junkie but what a car & im glad i had the opportunity to own a bit of a supercar.:D

Yeah hold on a second the OP is entitled to his/her opinion but when you describe older cars as 'bangers' & 'junk' its just a little insulting those who don't own a new car.

If you can afford a new car or you're able to convince the bank manager to load more debt on your shoulders thats fair enough but don't scoff at people driving older cars like they're peasants.
Its a bit rude & will inevitably lead to similarly ignorant snap remarks.

Also it is often the case that people want the new car purely to maintain a particular image (like a jacket or a new phone) & fcuk all to do with them being a motor enthusiast.
I work with people who wouldn't know how to refill the window washer container in a car but they make sure they have the new astra/focus/golf every year without fail. Couldn't be seen in a year old car you see, not good for the image dear.

1 - I never described older cars as bangers or junk - learn to read posts:rolleyes:

2 - I never described older car drivers as peasants - where you got that from I just donn't know. I'm giving my opinion on what I chose as a high mileage driver. I did not pass judgement of any kind. I didn't leave any snap remarks. I was just giving another side of the story as I'm entitled to do - unless you have a problem with that:confused:

3 - My car isn't very new anymore but I am more than capable of doing basic maintenance thanks. I'm not a badge snob/plate snob at all. I just prefer the safety aspect if I need to be on the road a lot. I'd like to see my kids grow up if the worst happened.

If I touched a nerve - that wasn't my intent.

If on the other hand you cant cope with my opinion then report it and make crap up:D

I used to love reading Quentin Wilson, and he been totally mystified at someone buying a brand new car. Drive it out of the showroom and lose a few thousand €€ instantly. It just doesn't make any sense, whatever way you look at it. Even buying a car a few months old (which I wouldn't btw), to rid of that hefty depreciation, would make a little more sense.

Calm down a bit man, i'm talking about the OP (that means original poster) making comments such as banger & junk. You can see these remarks in the original post. I'm not saying you said that.

When im saying if you can afford..... i mean if a person can afford..... Not specifically you. I think you know that.

You didn't touch a nerve, didn't even get near it.;)

    Chill.

In fairness if someone gets a kick out of a new car, fair enough. Theres no reason anyone should have a problem with that. You don't have to understand it. Ditto why someone drives an old car.
