I'm sick of having to connect my iphone to my computer everytime it crashes and needs to be reset. Is there any solution to this. I edited the hosts file using the vi command in terminal while logged in as the root user so sadly the hosts file has definitely been updated

If your positive your hase files are with Cydia then no reason for this not to work , must be something wrong at the host file end of things , try this test ...

ping gs.apple.com and see if you get a reply from the same I.P that you entered ( edited) in the host .
