High School Cancels Prom Because of Lesbian´s Request

Constance McMillen is like most teenagers who want to go to their prom with the date of their choice, only her date would have been a female and she wanted to wear a tuxedo. Her school however said that she could not do either of those things.
Last night the school board decided to cancel the prom after finding out from the ACLU that it would be against McMillen´s rights to ban same-sex dates. The mayor of Fulton, Paul Walker, said he backs the decision along with the town´s citizens.
There was mention of a private prom, which would mean that McMillen could be banned from it, but there is no proof of that happening yet. McMillen went back to school facing some hostility because her dad told her she had to face the students.

So folks, what would you do as headmaster of the school?
I would have had the prom and let it be open to all.

Prom cancelled = students organise an unofficial one themselves (actually they probably were going to anyway)

Yeah, I've been following this and it's disgraceful. Rather than allowing her to bring her girlfriend and wear a tux, they cancel the whole shebang and leave her open to possible ridicule, ostracisation and bullying. What a load of d**kheads.

What if she's a butch lesbian? And a tux is formal and can look stunning on a woman if worn well. Why should a woman have to wear a dress if she doesn't want to?

she wouldn't be wearing any old thing, she did not want to wear sweatpants and reeboks, she would be wearing a tux, in keeping with the formal dresscode of the event. in this day and age to demand that someone wears a dress rather than pants just because they have a vagina is crazy.

the whole thing really is a disgrace. hopefully the students organise a petition.

Firstly, she is not dressing like a man to prove she likes women. She is wearing a tux as is her right of freedom of expression and because that is what makes her feel comfortable and at ease.

Secondly, she had to ask because the school specifically sent out fliers stating that only dates of the opposite gender were allowed and because same sex couples who had tried to attend in the past had been turned away at the door. So rather than spending a ridiculous amount of money on prom clothes, a limo, etc. she did the prudent thing and and checked it out with the school first.

Don't worry it's just the popular girl throwing a hissy fit because she's not getting everything her way. They'll have a heart to heart or the popular girl will somehow get an insight into the lesbians life and they'll become friends.
Then they'll decide it's not to late to save the prom, everyone will chip in last minute and it'll be the best prom ever!

On one hand it was a very dick move. But on the other at least they're following through on fairness: "We told her she cant have her prom; it only fair we tell all of our students they cant have their prom too"

U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., said a bill he's introduced in Congress would make it illegal to discriminate against gay and lesbian school students. He said at least 10 states have such laws, and his bill is modeled after those.
"This situation with the prom is a perfect example of why we need to protect students from discrimination. In this case it's a prom. It other cases, it's getting beaten up or killed," Polis said.
The school district had said it hoped a privately sponsored prom could be held.
Southside Baptist Church Pastor Bobby Crenshaw said he's seen the South portrayed as "backwards" on Web sites discussing the issue, "but a lot more people here have biblically based values."
Itawamba County is a rural area of about 23,000 people in north Mississippi near the Alabama state line. It's near Pontotoc County, Miss., where more than a decade ago school officials were sued in federal court over their practice of student-led intercom prayer and Bible classes.

Some women can pull of a tux properly but not many. That first picture looks awful, the second one is ok but not great. Although, alot of guys can't pull off a tux either so it's not just a gender thing.

I meant as in how they react to a woman wearing what is typically known and accepted to be only a male uniform there. (Is it what she wants to wear / Is she doing to prove a point / Is she taking the piss because she thinks she can? / etc )

Its not a male uniform in the same way as a dress is a female one.

Women wear trousers and trousersuits all the time, but men (except the very brave) generally don't wear dresses too often in public.

Woman in a pantsuit is hardly a traumatising thing to see, unless its Mary Harney.

unfortunately, i doubt they're doing it in the name of fairness and equal treatment, and more in the name of avoiding a huge discrimination lawsuit.

Some people seem to be missing that, they cancelled after she threatened to sue.

I can see a point of view about making her wear a dress instead of a tux as you could class that as having a dress code similar to any other organisation, but to stop same sex couple from attending the prom was incorrect and the school are jut being w**kers over it.

I think people need to remember that this is only a few miles away from the town where Morgan Freeman was born.
That town held separate proms for blacks and whites until a bout two years ago, when Freeman offered to pay the whole cost of the prom if they had an integrated one. There was resistance, but they integrated.

From what I've read, and the discussions I've seen, the school were basically being tugged by both sides, and then said "Buckit, you guys sort it out, hold your own prom". They weren't really that upset about a lesbian going to prom, but they were being bitched at by everyone, and once threatened with a lawsuit, decided to walk away.

EDIT: Still really wrong, but people just need to remember the local pressure the Board would have been under. This probably isn't so much homophobia on their part, as just not wanting to get in trouble.

But this prom thing happens somewhere every year. What happens is that the school cancels it and the students get together to run it privately, and the kid who was originally getting ostracised by her school is now ostracised by her peers...

It's a little bit unusual to see a woman in a tux however I think if she feels comfortable in it then what is the harm? It may not be as aesthetically pleasing as a nice dress to some. It wasn't so long ago that women were not supposed to wear trousers..
As regards the banning of same-sex dates, well I think that is harsh. I also think it is completely unfair of the school to cancel the prom and will send the wrong message to the prejudiced.

obviously its sad, the school should let them go. exact same thing was allowed for a couple at our debs
