Capitalism requires a free market economy, how does socializing upwards of 70bn in bank debt fit into that model?

So on that, according to you the largest Capitalist country in the world (the US) isn't capitalist?

Capitalism requires a free market economy so no, capitalism as it existed is dead. Capitalism is built on demand and greed. If a business is not viable it will fail, that's exactly what happened but instead of letting them fail we socialized the debt. Now we have socialism for corporate entities and a form of capitalism for the people. The problem being that as its all driven by the need for profit and no longer sustainability, the whole system is doomed to failure. As the Chinese tweaked communism, the west is going to have to radically rethink capitalism. If a corporation is required to increase profits year on year to satisfy its stockholders, at twice the rate of inflation, that is not sustainable. America can no longer be classed a free market economy no, so therefore it is not a capitalist society anymore!

    No.

I don't begrudge anyone anything. I'm not jealous of success. To be honest accusations of begrudgery and jealousy are frankly a cheap argument.

This budget hit the lowest earners in thid country the hardest. It is increasing income inequality and is actually a transfer of wealth from the poorest to the richest. That to me is deeply deeply unfair.

But the word fairness gets thrown way too much for my liking.

Professor Kathleen Lynch discussed the issue of fairness 2 years ago

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

    This is patently untrue.

Increasing income inequality would have required not hitting those on high incomes whilst hitting those on lower - this didn't happen

Transferring wealth would have required actually giving more benefits to those on higher incomes - this didn't happen either.

Sorry I'm really going to have to disagree with you here, its just not the case, I'm a low earner and the most I'm going to lose is around is around €50 a month, money I could easily save with being more sensible with my money.

Watching Mishel Roux Jr on MasterChef is a confusing experience for this raging lesbian.

He just described a nice goats cheese using the word "goaty". Delicious.

The girl I had a brief thing with a few months ago changed her relationship status on fb recently. My stomach sank, but I'm happy for her. It was more the envy of her finding someone and being happy whereas I'm living at home and feeling like the spinster aunt. Oh well, maybe by Xmas 2013 I'll have found some happiness too!

I know the feeling pal! Girl I was seeing for a little while recently told me she just got into a relationship with a guy. It's a killer :(

On the upside had a nice date with a girl before Christmas but she hasn't really been in touch. I hate the way I'm so bloody straight forward with these things that people always know where they stand with me, or I should think so! I think I'm just one of those people that's 'good' at texting wheras maybe she isn't...or maybe she's not interested anymore!

The entry round questions on Where In The World are EXTREMELY complicated for a quiz show these days, they really didn't want to hand out prizes did they....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,920 ✭✭✭✭stephen_n

RTE's quiz shows were always rediculously hard compared to their UK counterparts, I vaguely remember Murphy's micro quizem [sp] and it was probably harder than mastermind but RTE's budget didn't really stretch to good prizes after building the fancy sets lol

Yet another thread in AH about LGBT issues.... and it's going to descend into a pissing contest, as usual. Those threads are usually started with good intentions but just give the bigots a forum and a platform.

But the video in it (promoting views putting down gay marriage; made by that wonderful cancer on this society The Iona Institute) would be quite hilarious, but for the fact that they're being serious about it. It's not tongue in cheek. And they have the brass neck to say that they're NOT discriminating.

That would be the topic of discussion on the aforementioned AH thread, bit of a headwreck of a read...

The problem is that "Mum and Dad" keep having gay kids to discriminate against.

I'd say a similar argument was made when men and women of different colours wanted to marry in the US. Those kind of videos always remind of the Civil Rights history I did in school.

Awkward moment when you're on the wrong side of history:

I've read way way worse on AH. It's actually not that bad at all.

Oh I agree, headwreck isn't a strong description at all in my book, just these circular threads of ill considered opinions, well, wreck my head slightly.
