Songs With Significance

Going off the "sloppy love songs" thread a bit. But ladies, what songs have that special significance to you, and why? Do they remind you of a moment? Or is it something in the lyrics that strikes your heart?

For me, it's the song "The Girl" by City and Colour (also known as Dallas Green, a singer/songwriter from my hometown in Canada). There's something in the lyrics and mood of the song that completely hits me, and reminds me of a lot I've gone through in past relationships, one in particular, where it was kind of similar to the situation depicted in the song.

So what songs hit home for you, and why?

mods: I know this probably belongs in the "music" section but I'm not really interested in the opinions of the usuals there, I'm curious to see what kind of songs have significance for other women, as I think it is kind of a girly thing to tie moments and relationships to songs and I think there it'd just be a list, whereas here it's a much nicer environment to share in. Up to your discretion though, of course!

"Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" by Vampire Weekend. It reminds me of my teen years and the very sheltered place where I spent them (not Cape Cod, but a very similar New England town and atmosphere as described in the song.) Also, I became a huge fan of Afro Pop music starting in my late teens. They are referencing a type of Congolese music (the Kwassa Kwassa) with both the title and rhythms and guitar style used in the song. The music and my travels to Africa in some ways were a breaking away from said sheltered existence.

We used to dress exactly like the people at the party:

    Amy Winehouse ''Wake Up Alone''.

    Only for the first lines...

...Its ok, in the day, I'm staying busy.
Tied up enough so I don't have to wonder where is he....

    You can guess why.:(

There's a lot of songs that will remind of a certain situation or place. I nearly always associate people and situations with songs. When i hear a song it can bring back memories I might not have thought about in a while.

The one that means most to me though is probably 'Hurt' by Christina Aguilera. It's a very emotional song for me. It reminds me of my mother, who hasn't died but has Alzheimers, so I've certainly 'lost' her. The lyrics get to me every time.

On a happier note, California Love by Tupac always gets me in a good mood and reminds me of sun, holidays and fun. I always picture myself driving down the PCH in California when I sing this.

I love how songs have the power to change your mood or fill your head with stuff you weren't previously thinking of.

This might sound silly, but I can't listen to the P!nk song "Stupid Girls".
At the time it was in the charts, I spent some time in a mental hospital after suffering a breakdrown. It was playing constantly at the nurse's station so everytime I hear it, it automaticly takes me back to the lumpy bedsheets and the sound of people screaming down the corridor.

In the same vein, "Under The Bridge" by RHCP sends shivers dow my spine because the lyrics remind me too much of the events that lead to my hospitalization. Even just thinking of those two songs brings about a tightness in my chest.

However, on a lighter note, I'll always be reminded of when I got my cat Gizmo everytime I hear Queen's "I Want To Break Free", simply becuase it came on the radio whilst the cat tried to escape a DIY quarentine box following an operation.

I always stop and appreciate "How soon is now?" by The Smiths....aside from being truly beautiful. It reminds me of a friend and the pleasure of being a lazy grass patch loitering youth. :)

Driving with the Brakes On - Del Amitri. Soppy 90s middle-aged-man song. No particular reason why, but it makes me sad.

Birdhouse in Your Soul - They Might Be Giants. It reminds me of being small and happy and always puts me in a good mood.

School Night - Ani Di Franco. There's something about the lyrics...

Dream Theater - Learning To Live, the lyrics just get me every time. Reminds me of a tough time a few years ago.

This song has meant so much to me at different times of my life since it was released almost 6 years ago. The lyrics are so beautiful and the music never fails to give me goosebumps. I've seen it performed live 4 times and it has nearly reduced me to tears each time :o

oh wow, i have so many. i'll just outline a few key ones, i think, though i do take exception to the idea that girls do this more than guys. though, maybe im biased in that my life tends to revolve around music, and the vast majority of people (male and female) i know are also huge music fans.

Joseph Arthur - Honey and the Moon... this song was introduced to me by who was later to become my housemate, and one of my best friends, back when i was 17 (17 was a really really rough year for me). the song is just so sweet and sad and just so pretty, it was so hard not to fall in love with it. i still when i hear it (playing it now, after finding it on youtube), just have this really strong memory of walking by the canal by myself, feeling absolutely miserable, and feeling soothed by this song when it came on, only to burst into tears by the last chorus of 'right now, everything is turning blue, and right now, the sun is trying to kill the moon, and right now, i wish i could follow you... to the shores... of freedom... where no one lives.' just grabs my heart strings, that one.

Ride - Polar Bear (i know dudess likes this one :P ). this was about the same year as the song above... i was introduced to ride by my now boyfriend, who i moved to nz to be with. this song seemingly always reminded him of me, and i heard it and fell in love with it. that year, i was so messed up but this song reminds me of how i was coming to terms with my circumstances and myself, and moving on towards bigger and better things. means so much to me that i got a tattoo of a polar bear on my hip, with the lyrics "she knew she was able to fly" above it.

S*M*A*S*H - Real Surreal - possibly one of my all time favourite albums, self abused. this is one of the songs from it, that just about melts my heart every time. 'you were real surreal man, and it's only now im beginning to understand, that a table's not a table, it's a chair, you said, so - in my head - i'm not sad, and you're not dead'. just that whole coming to terms with a friend dying. 'i stood by and watched my friend die. i stood by ... WHY???'. it's one i always come back to listening when someone dies, but one friend in particular, yeah. this song resonates deeply, there.

Greenday - no regrets - it was my ex's and my song... and brings back memories of great days and great memories. I have absolutely no feelings towards him now, but still love the song.

You've got a friend - I even burst into tears when I heard it on Glee the other day. Not sure why but I think the words in the song are really really nice.

Now its leonard cole song as its my current Bf and my song and when ever I hear it, it reminds me how lucky and happy I am with him

'Iris' By Go goo dolls, I actually dont really like the song all that much but it was my ex husbands and my song so it always brings back good memories when I hear it.

It is getting tears in my eyes even wrtiting about this...is is the song Freewheel" by Duke Special - over 3 years ago. I had just been diagnosed with a cancer that has a very low survival rate, was undergoing chemo, helping to arrange my wedding (and I was also on my honeymoon/pre surgery holiday for part of it)...I was litterally living every second as I wanted good memories for my husband and other relatives...in a wierd way it was wonderful but also so scary...the lyrics of this song really made sense to me.

I listen to the words of most songs quite intently so lots of songs would really have meaning to me generally. The one song that I hate hearing is over the rainbow - the Judy Garland version. The wizard of oz was one of my sons favourite movies and this was the only song played at his and his sisters funeral.

Also 'do they know its christmas', this makes me very sad, I'm not one of the folk who'll sing wildly to it because its all christmassy but instead I cry to the lyrics thinking of all the poor people suffering around the world while we're having such a great time. I do love christmas though, just that song really gets to me.

My OH and mine song is the Take That song "Rule the world." We wouldn't normally be Take That fans but we heard it at the end credits of Stardust (a film which he believes I'm the image of the main girl) and it just summed us up. "we can rule the world" hehe I actually bought him a Star for our last anniversary because of the film and the song

My dad worked in Russia when i grew up and he made me a mixed tape once of songs he liked and one of them was the Michael Jackson "You are not alone," it always reminds me of him and i used to listen to it the whole time when he was away (however-hated xfactor version!!)

    Oooh, loads of them!

Sweet Child O' Mine from G'n'R's Use Your Illusion II reminds me of school, Simon & Garfunkle's Bridge Over Troubled Water reminds me of an activity camp where I seemed to get over my ridiculous fear of everything, Cherub Rock by the Smashing Pumpkins was played to death the year I left home, Uni has to be Savage Garden, Work was Eminem, meeting my other half is Is This It by The Strokes. My son's birth was Linkin Park and my daughters has to be James Blunt's You're Beautiful....

There are so many more. Sometimes I hear a song and I am instantly transported back in time to a crystal clear memory I had no idea I had, it's weird. :o

I had a really hard time from narrow minded lecturers when I started (and all through) teaching college. I was a happy go lucky hippie, with fading pink hair, a stripy hat, a Metallica hoodie and a dream to make a difference in a child's life...

Only I didn't quite fit the bill of what a teacher should be, then again my college thought an anorexic, psychotic, man eating attenton whore was ideal ... Teaching Practices were the hardest, most stressful, exhausting, confidence chipping times of my life.

I used to listen to Pantera, Alice in Chains, Slipknot and Metallica on my head phones every morning on the DART and this little private escapism gave me reason to keep going in and give two fingers to them all.

Sadly, I took a year out (forcibly) and had to have a personality and image overhaul and even though I got my degree in the end, I felt bad for comprimising and bending to their will. Metal & Rock music has given so much and that college gave me nothing but hassle.

I met Phil Anselmo from Pantera last summer and told him how important his music had been to me. I was sniffly, he was touched, he gave me a hug... :o

For the record, I teach junior infants with black streaks in my hair and 8 piercings and I kick ass at what I do. :D

These songs remind me of my time in college, to always be myself, that I can do whatever I put my mind to, and to not give up when times are tough.

Alice in Chains - Down in a Hole
Slipknot - Circle, Before I Forget, Duality (Also reminds me of the year I got with my boyf)
Pantera - Walk, ****ing Hostile, Regular People
    Metallica - Sanitarium
Kiss - I was Made for Loving You :D \m/

    /teen angst memories ;)

Luther Vandross - Dance with my Father. I know this song is about a dad, but it reminds me of my grandad. I grew up with him as the father figure in my life and while I have every respect for my own dad, my grandad always has been and always will be my main man! :)
"Never dreamed that he would be gone from me". My grandad hasn't passed away, but unfortunately he has lost his memory so we don't have too many moments now where he actually remembers who I am. Every time I hear this song, I find myself seeing little pictures of my past - following my grandad everywhere.
So if I could have anything in the whole, wide world, I'd want my grandad to be just the way he used to be. I'd want to sow seeds with him again, even though I hate gardening and go for drives 'cause "I have to charge the cars battery!". :D

Angels, Robbie Williams. Never fails to remind me of someone who used to sing that song if ever he was asked to perform at something. We all knew he'd do very well in the music business, but fate had other ideas and he died at 19.

Some really moving stories on here. Its amazing really the power music can have. It can completely transport you to another time and place.

For me there is three songs where the lyrics, music, everything just make me catch my breath and conjure up very strong emotions and feelings for me.

Pink- Don't Let me Get me: I went through a very depressed period when I was in college and I didn't like much about myself. This song and especially the lines 'Everyday I fight a war against the mirror ,I can't take the person starin' back at me' just really honed in on my mood at the time. What was great about the song was it had such a good beat that I couldnt help feel better after listening to it and it helped me get rid of a lot of angst towards myself.

Christy Moore- Missing you : I was brought up in Cricklewood in Lodon and saw so many Irish men drinking themselves into an early grave. The lyric that stands out for me is ' I'll never go home now because of the shame, a misfits reflection in a shop window pane'. Theres so many Irish living out the rest of their lives in squalor in Kilburn too ashamed to come back to an Ireland they no longer know.

Keane- The Last Time : Reminds me of a wonderful period when I was dating a wonderful man who I didnt appreciate at all. However,it evokes very strong feelings of genuine love and caring in me.

Summer holidays in Clare with my Dad and my brother, driving around with the windows down and a Best of the 70s compilation blaring out of the car. Pure, unadulterated bliss :)

This song will always remind me of my 30th birthday a few months ago, I had it on repeat for the days leading up to it and all of that morning, it was both the best and worst night of my life.

    For me it's four songs:

Don't Stop Believing - Journey: It was playing on the radio when I first met my boyfriend, then it was playing when we went on our first date, for our first kiss and the first time he told me he loved me. So it had a lot of meaning to us, whenever I'm upset he air guitars his way through it to cheer me up.

This is the First Day of My Life - Bright Eyes: It always makes me think of my OH I really was blind before I met him".

The River - Bruce Springsteen: It always reminds me of growing up and riving around with my mother and the Boss's Greatest Hits blaring out of the tape player.

Walk Like a Man -Bruce Springsteen: While about Springsteen's father's death and his attempts to live his life in his honour, it always makes me think of my own Father and our relationship and makes me wonder if you never forgive someone for something do you regret it for the rest of your life?

I had a miscarriage three years ago on the third of this month. There were a few days when we weren't too sure what exactly was going on, so I guess I was kinda hanging on to a little bit of hope with this song.

"I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things we should've said,
    That were never said.
All the things we should've done,
    That we never did.
All the things that you needed from me.
All the things that you wanted for me.
All the things that I should've given,
    But I didn't."

Now it just always reminds me of that time. It tends to be on repeat pretty often around this time.

Even though there are no (understandable) lyrics, it doesn't matter. The music speaks for itself.

It's my favourite song of all time & if I ever have the honour of seeing it performed live i'll consider it as one life goal completed!

Absolutely brilliant band with beautiful music and you MUST see them live…they are one of the best bands I've ever seen.

An unfortunate memory for me (and I'm sure many others!) would be that bloody Maniac song...played at the end of EVERY nightclub back in my teenage years....

Oh my word...I am one of those people who associates music with people...its usually a song that was out/played alot when we hung out at some point or the lyrics hold some kind of significant "in" joke for us!

Whenever i hear Kanye West Gold-digga I think of my friend Ciaran, Whenever MGMT is played I think of the summer i spent in Canada, Whenever I hear Radiohead, any Radiohead song I think of a boy i used to be really close to,actually that goes for Tom Waits too for that same guy.

And this next one is kind of apt but when Florence and the machine Dog days are over came out, it was the same time that I got accepted to my masters and moved to Dublin, had to find somewhere to live asap and all the chaos that comes with that but it was after a year of being unemployed...so it just stuck with me... :o

Happiness hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her stuck still no turning back...
The dog days are over The dog days are done
The horses are coming So you better run...Leave all your love and your longing behind You cant carry it with you if you want to survive...

Immortality - Celine Dion, written by the BeeGees
So this is who I am
And this is all I know
And I must choose to live
For all that I can give
The spark that makes the power grow
And I will stand for my dream if I can
Symbol of my faith in who I am
    But you are my only
And I must follow on the road that lies ahead
And I won't let my heart control my head

Because you loved me - Celine Dion

Michael Jackson - You are not alone

Nella Fantasia, I could close my eyes, listen to it and I always end up with tears, I'm actually out in goosebumps listening to it now

And simply for the lyrics, as it kinda sums up my life sometims - I believe in you

I cant even listen to that song without crying...am sorry for your loss.

We had 5 miscarriages last year and the first one was the worst and is still raw but I heard "Leaving New York" by REM just as I founf out that we had lost another baby...I then had to pick up the strength to tell Shane that we had lost another baby...I dont know how we survived...

On a happier note we were giving it our last try for a while (I had worked out that the baby would be born on his grandmothers birthday)...a few days early I got "Flowers in the window" played on the radio and was listening to it in hope, planning on getting it played as a way of telling Shane that he was a Daddy...as it turns out I had a really bad tooth ache the following Monday and asked Shane to go out for painkillers...I took a test to make sure that I could take them...the pain did not seem as bad when I said "flowers in the window"...am now over 32 weeks gone...

I listen to the words of most songs quite intently so lots of songs would really have meaning to me generally. The one song that I hate hearing is over the rainbow - the Judy Garland version. The wizard of oz was one of my sons favourite movies and this was the only song played at his and his sisters funeral.
Muy sincerest sympathies. Your post saddened me so much. Hugs.

I have so many significant songs - about two dozen, easily. I'm listening to one now. It's Run by Snow Patrol. These lines:
    "Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

    Louder louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbye
    I nearly do"
always remind me of the night my mother died. They so perfectly describe the scene that they could have been written about it. Even though this song makes me sad, I listen to it compulsively. It draws me back to that night and those moments, and it's strangely comforting.

My one of my favouritest songs ever is The Show Must Go On by Queen. It keeps me going when I feel I can't. The night Mother died, I spent what felt like hours wandering hospital corridors, listening to the lines "Empty spaces - what are we living for?
Abandoned places - I guess we know the score...
    On and on!
Does anybody know what we are looking for?" reverberate in my head. Regardless, it's still one of my go-to pick-me-up songs.

On a happier note, Where's Me Jumper never fails to remind me of my little sis as a happy-go-lucky five year old, and Feeling Good by Nina Simone always reminds me that tomorrow is another day :D

This song always makes me smile so much! It's from the movie Matilda, but I love it because it reminds me of my last few weeks of the summer before college before I was being let off into the big bad world!

    I'll go a little further back :o

    A woman I was mad about liked this song at the time;

Told you I was going further back... :D

    Then it went pear shaped as these things often do and I listened to this with fresh ears;

The scouse git nailed it at the age of 23, decades before I knew what he meant. 2 minutes of time has rarely encapsulated the obvious and the heartfelt of a breakup so well.

    Then this one;

I know, I know it's U2. But this was the mid 80's. A time when divorce was illegal, contraception was restricted, the old order still had sway and unemployment was at record levels. This countries sons and daughters, the best of us, were leaving in droves. There was graffiti at the ferry wall "will the last one to leave please turn out the lights".

I heard this actual recording in a cab on holiday in New York back then(think it wasonly released in the states?). The black lad driving turned it up and said "hey, you're Irish like these guys. I love this song". We had a bit of a natter and though he was a born and bred New Yorker he had always thought of "irish" as a prefix to "american" in a way. The country itself had never really registered for him. It was a place at most to be from, not to be in, or part of. Plus the longing aspect appealed to him.

Today we have no particular "oh wow" if an Irish act or person is on the world stage. Back then it was much more of a wow. When someone like Geldof was creating records and gigs for famine and U2 were on the cover of Time magazine, it did make a difference, both subtle and obvious. So as far as Im concerned Bonio can witter on as much as he likes.:D he played his part.

Sorry. Had to kick it old skool and such :o:)

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I love that Fall to Pieces song ... Haven't listened to that in a long time.

I haven't listened to Snow Patrol in years either, for the same reason.

    It's a beautiful song.

I think this thread is sort of therapeutic in a way. It made me think back on memories and experiences I haven't thought about in a long time...
