It looks like this problem is more complicated than I originally thought. I'm updating it at the moment with a new workaround. It seems that refreshing the connection to the O2 network works until the next time the network decides to stop processing requests again so when the new version gets the connection refused error it's going to add a new O2 APN, then refresh your connection to the network by activating this APN for a few seconds and then going back to your old one. I have it on my phone now and it seems to be working well. If this problem is happening on your phone you'll see your 3G/EDGE/H symbol disappear for a few seconds as your data connection is refreshed

And of course the app will ask your permission to do this the first time it happens and you can disable it if you want.

    What network are you on?
    Does it ever work?
Press menu->Settings->Sending method. What's it set to?

On the desktop app I just tried to add a new login but it kept saying it could not connect to the network site when I tried to test the login even though I could login fine to www.o2.ie and I was able to send messages no problem from there?

I then saved the details anyhow in Cabbage and tried to send a message and it worked??

    Cheers,
    M

Oops. I'll fix that. To verify the account it checks the number of remaining messages and it looks like that's not working. That logic is separate to the logic for sending messages which is why one can fail while the other works

Thanks, that worked for me. I initially reinstalled the app and used WiFi to set up the account again as it wouldn't let me via 3G.
Just sent a text via 3G there and it went through quickly

The problem will come back, it's intermittent. The new version I'm releasing soon tries to send the message 6 times and resets your internet connection each time before sending. Seems to be working so far but I want to test it a bit more before releasing it

I've released the new version with that fix now. Give it a shot and see if it makes O2 connections more reliable

Sam do you have a paid version of Cabbage? I see cabbage ultimate listed but it's not the same developer as the free version so wanted make sure it was your app also so you see my money and not some imposter :)

They're both me. The Android app was first developed by a friend of mine using my server side scripts but he didn't have time for it after the first one or two releases so I took over

Ah cool. Just felt like I should actually pay for something I use so much.

can it be configured to send a real or web text automatically depending on whether wifi or data connections are active or not?

Not right now but it's something I could add. Would you want it to send real SMS on mobile data and web texts on wifi?

One thing you can do is assign contacts to accounts so that all messages to certain contacts will always be sent with the same account or real SMS

It's just the lazy man in me speaking :D

As when I'm at home wifi is always on and when I'm out it's not. I don't bother with 3G etc. as I'm pay as you go with out a data plan. But if the app could detect this and automatically route accordingly then sweet!!!!! But not a major thing for me.

So like a rule : If wifi/3g = connected and there are web sms available use that else use real sms?

....... likely = 100 lines of code and headaches for Sam :D

Shouldn't be too difficult. I already have logic for overriding the default account with the contact assignment feature so I should be able to add this extra option to it

I'm in the same boat as Calex - wifi is on when I'm at home. Sam can you advise if you then send a text via wifi, can you send it anywhere, i.e. internationally? And for free?:D

Sending via wifi makes no difference to where you can send it. Vodafone, O2 and Tesco support international web texts and if you send them over wifi or if you have a data plan they'll be free to send

Also, you might already know this but you can hold your finger down on the send button and choose a different account or real SMS for that message

I'm with Three & have unlimited data. Would much prefer to give my euro for a wifi option to you rather than the Yankee or any of the Indian crew that are throwing up apps on the Market, now Play Store.

I was definitely not aware of that one

That's a perfect solution for my earlier request :)

Got notified of an available upgrade on Monday. After the upgrade some messages do go and I get a reply, but the status still shows "Sending " on the screen. Other times, particularly tonight, I get a message "Invalid response. Expected a numerical value." Whats that all about?

It looks like three's webtext service is down right now. I went to http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/webtext.three.ie and I got "It's not just you! http://webtext.three.ie looks down from here. "

The error "Expected a numerical value" means that my server is supposed to send a number as a response code and the phone didn't receive it. In this case it's most likely because the three website is down the script hangs and doesn't respond with anything

Edit: actually looks like it is sort of up but running very slowly. I sent myself a message and received it about 2 minutes later and the server didn't give any response because it timed out

That would explain getting replies to messages that are still reported as sending and the invalid resonse error

I'm in the West, Sam, and there was a major breakdown of the Vodafone network yesterday afternoon. A lot of areas were still out at mid-morning today. That would have implications for Three, as they use Voda for internal roaming. May still be an issue so.

    Hi,

This is a great app! I just have one problem. When I receive a message it causes both Go SMS and Cabbage to send me a notification. Anyway to have just cabbage notify me?

    Thanks

ive not used gosms but you would need to look in the options/settings menu within gosms to disable gosms notifications.

This is right. Open Go SMS and press menu->settings and untick "New message notification" and "enable popup windows"

Anyway to get the "three.ie.webtext" off the end of sent messages?

    Thanks

Hi, I was under the impression that Three removed that signature a few months ago. I also just sent myself a message from my 3 account and it didn't have the signature when it arrived.

If all of your messages still have that signature appended to them I think you'll have to call Three and report the problem.

But first could you sned yourself a message directly from Three's website (http://webtext.three.ie) and confirm that it has the signature when you send it that way

Hi, are you both still having problems? there were problems with both the eMobile and O2 websites the past few days that should be resolved now.

However, a lot of people have been having an unrelated problem sending messages with O2 the past few weeks and if either of you are on O2 the problem doesn't seem to be effecting you so if either of you are on O2 would you mind answering a few questions for me:

    1. Are you on pre pay or bill pay?
    2. Do you always use the app over wifi or do you use O2's mobile internet too? If so, does it work when using the mobile internet?
    3. On your phone press menu->Settings->Wireless and network->Mobile networks->Access point names. There should be a selected option there. If so, what do the first and second lines of the selected option say?

    Thanks

    Hi,

I have this app on a three smartphone. If I add my vodafone account as well, will I be able to receive the responses to the vodafone texts onto my three smartphone?

I know I can send webtexts for both three and vodafone and definitely receive the replies for the three ones, because the smartphone is three.

Will I have to carry a second phone around to see the responses to my vodafone messages?

    Thanks!
