E&S and the SU

I hear E&S have been disbanded by the SPC, yet people are complaining to the SU, and don't seem to be listening when they are being told that the SU has nothing to do with it.

If a society breaks the rules, they will be reprimanded, no matter how much people liked them. And if the rules were broken, maybe the members should direct complaints and requests for explanations to the (former?) committee?

I have to agree, this is all pretty hilarious, they are mounting some kind of mini revolt on Facebook atm.. Against the Students Union of all bodies.. They have nothing to do with societies on campus.

You cant break the rules and expect to be let off with a slap on the wrist, whatever about the small rules but what is effectively embezzlement of SPC funding..

so what exactly did they do? it says on fb they stole money. any extra details?

About time the SPC found a reason to get rid of that drinking soc in disguise...

I presume everyone who's complaining about it were only ever in E&S and never joined any other real proper societies.

They stole money. And they seem to be complaining about being punished for this.

They stole a JCB and jacked the ATM in the hub. Fecking feral gangs running the country into the ground.

They stole all the marshmallows from the inter-faith center.

Well here's the link to the College View article on the initial suspension by the SPC.

    http://www.thecollegeview.com/2010/02/10/es-suspended-over-funds/

I assume info regarding the SPC's decision will surface soon too.

Nice, thanks. The only info abot the whole thing I could see was some uninformed comments on Facebook. This clears things up a bit more.

What was the conference they were meant to go on? Was it just committee? Or was it a members' trip?

real proper society? what's wrong with having a drinking soc?

SPC actively promoting and funding the drinking of alcohol as a past time. Hmmmmmmm, that could only end badly. Also I'm pretty sure it's against the rules or some such.

Also I applaud the SPC's decision because it's actually sickening to think that other students paid for E&S to have a holiday under totally false pretences.

    +1

If a so called "drinking soc" isn't a real proper society, how would the likes of games soc (who won soc of the year iirc) be considered a real proper society?

For the record, I think it was a stupid mistake by E&S and they deserved a punishment but a lot of people have a chip on their shoulder regarding E&S which I don't really understand.

Because societies are supposed to be a about a core interest. And 'getting really drunk' isn't a core interest I think the SPC can really endorse (Drinking, in terms of say a society dedicated to wine tasting, or brewing or the like might be, but I know the SPC has decided differently in the past). 'Socialising' isn't really a core interest either. It's something every society does (as is drinking, for the most part). E&S was approved as a society on the basis of a claim that would be dedicated to the 'entreupenerial' part of their name. While they've done a lot on that part of their mandate, but I always felt that there were an awful lot of very transparent attempts to get the SPC to fund things with little or no relevance to that. Granted most societies try that every now and again, but E&S just seemed to be trying a bit harder.

As for people having a chip on their shoulder, it's somewhat understandable. In my dealings with E&S, they've always seemed more than a little arrogant (it must be pointed out that they're far from the only society like that though, and I've dealt with a tiny minority of the committee). That seemed to be the experience amongst many of the other society people I knew as well. Plus, E&S have ignored the SPC on multiple occasions in the past. And every time, they've gotten away with it, because the SPC have very little they can do in the way of slaps on the wrist, and were always extremely reluctant to disband, or suspend them, on the basis that that that punished all their members, rather than merely the group that were misbehaving. That kinds of thing will always annoy other societies, and pretty reasonably so.

Cian (Who thankfully isn't on the SPC anymore, so doesn't have to listen to any bitching)

So what was the granted money actually for? How much was it?

I can imagine quite a few people getting annoyed that their capitation fee gets embezzled for a piss up.

Just got an e-mail from them. Now the content of the email I couldn't care less about. But surely they shouldn't still be allowed keep our emails/a DCU address after being struck off?

If the E&S was disbanded - so to should have been the ability of it's commitee members to send group emails to their list.

I'd imagine that somebody forgot to take away their mailing abilities.

    Opps a daizy doo.

If they've kept a record of the list it's kinda hard for anyone to prevent that. They could have saved the details somewhere.

Have they actually done that though? Or is it just a case of no one having bothered to delete the society from the system? I know societies were normally dead for several years before we got around to deleting them in my day.

At least F.T.U.B. Soc's acroynm means something.

Is "n.e.r.d" a clever recursive acronym like PHP or GNU? If so, what does it stand for? Why does no fullstop follow the "d"? What is the significance of eschewing conformist linguistic standards such as capitalisation? Are you trying to make a statement against post-modern pop-culture? milkwine, I need to know! :(
