Jesus christ, this forum is gone to the dogs. You can't even ask a question to start off a fun thread without there having to be someone arguing inanely.

i said that the other day

You'd wonder was sort of effect a vast quantity of engine oil has on handling and economy. Was surprised to see 12L of oil in a Porsche.
Whatever about handling, I think the effects on economy and engine life are not good - that much oil in an air-cooled engine takes a long time to heat up.

New 3.2 transit van 12.8 litres with filter. There is also a Ferrari I can't think of the model which takes 18 litres. I'd say the transit takes more oil per engine size than any other engine:pac:

The M1A1 Main Battle Tank takes 17 litres of oil. That surprised me, I thought it'd be a lot more!

Thats a gas turbine engine, a dry sump, I thought it'd be less
    old_aussie wrote: »
    Wouldn't that be transmission oil?

No the engine still needs oil, but the transmission will need it too shirley :D

It wouldnt make any difference to handling
I dunno. 12L of oil adds 10Kg to the weight of the engine, which is already in the wrong place.

I could be mistaken but didnt he say its a dry sump? the majority of that 10 kg could be elsewhere? probably not but might be, plus its still only 6kg more than most cars with a higher cog

is the sump nut in? :D

Funny you should say that. When I saw the thread I thought I'd have to post the story from an old workmate who served his time in Roadstone. One of the fitters was changing the oil in a truck over the pit in the garage and forgot the sump plug. The oil is pumped from a tank in their garage and this guy managed to pump the entire contents of the tank into the pit, through the engine, before realising.

How did we come to be talking about this guy?

He was my plant fitting teacher in tech!

I heard the oil in a Toureg 2.5 tdi is both voluminous and also hideously expensive. Will check and report....

His model has it behind the back wheel. Co-incidentally it was moved forward of the back wheel in 1972 as an attempt to improve handling. It was moved back a year later and stayed there.
    wikipedia wrote:
Due to the 911's unusual engine placement (rear-mounted, with most of the vehicle's weight concentrated over the rear axle) early 911's were prone to oversteer when driven at the limit, and could easily spin in the hands of an inexperienced driver. In an attempt to remedy this, Porsche relocated the oil tank from its position behind the right rear wheel to in front of it. This had the effect of moving the weight of almost 9 quarts (8.5 L) of oil from outside the wheelbase to inside, improving weight distribution and thus, handling. To facilitate filling of the oil tank, Porsche installed an oil filler door (much like the fuel filler door on the left front fender) on the right rear quarter panel. Unfortunately, this unique design was scrapped after only one year, some say because inattentive gas station attendants were putting gas in the oil tank. The oil tank was subsequently moved back to its original position for model year 1973, and remained there until it was moved back within the wheelbase for the 964 models.

    From another forum......

"STG £225 to get it done here -oil is castrol longlife 3 which
retails at £13.40 per litre -your oil capacity should be
8.9ltrs so approx £120 for oil alone plus retail prices to
do the job approx 1hr =£100 makes it expensive but the
labour rate varies around the country"

I can do an oil and filter change on my MkII Escort for about €30!:D

I've never heard of a garage in the UK having a labour rate of £100 per hour, that's shocking.

Tis more than the oil is voluminous in them. They are a bad yoke.
