I think I might have a winner. My 2.0 Rover 75 CDT had a change today, first time since I've gotten it. Took the oil out, got the manual out and was stunned to see it needs 8.5 litres. Sure enough, 8.5 litres and the dipstick read correctly.

    What's the largest you've seen/owned?

Are you sure its not 6.5 litres?

I've changed a few of those and they take 6.5 litres usually.

Read the first post, 8.5 litres in, and the dipstick read correctly. Thanks for the advice, can we get back to the subject now?

I am sorry to disagree, the sump holds 6.3 to 6.5 litres, so not sure where the other 2 litres is.

Jesus christ, this forum is gone to the dogs. You can't even ask a question to start off a fun thread without there having to be someone arguing inanely.

Wow, can I be in your club. kthksbye.

@ the 12 litre boys - holy crap. That's a lot of dinosaur juice

The 4.2L RS6 takes 9 litres of very expensive stuff for an oil & filter change.
Luckily, it comes in 4.5L containers, so I'm not left with a partly full container. :)

The M1A1 Main Battle Tank takes 17 litres of oil. That surprised me, I thought it'd be a lot more!

I have the rover 75 workshop manual here with all capacities. THe largest engine oil capacity I can see across the range is for the M47R diesel whichrequires 6.75L for oil & filter change with 7.3L required from dry.
If paintdoctors manual says 8.5L I would be inclined to believe that but it must be an unusual version of the engine

Saw your car in town the other day - absolutely stunning condition!

Anyone jealous my Civic takes only 3.5 litres :D

From memory both my 735 and the 928 used about 8.5l. I think it is going to be hard to beat Anan1s dry sump system for capacity, maybe a 993 uses even more?

My source says the same :)

You'd wonder was sort of effect a vast quantity of engine oil has on handling and economy. Was surprised to see 12L of oil in a Porsche.

    Apparently 7.5l according to this:

    Yep :

Edit: Above links don't seem to work anymore, but they were pointing to the castrol website, that gives the litres required for each model.

If your 75 takes that amount of oil, surely any 320d or Freelander of that time takes the same?

2002 520i (2.2L) - Think its around 6.5L.... really awkward amount to buy.

Think the 525d and 530d is around 8.5 litres,

    7 litres fills the 525d

Your Porsche has 3 times the oil capacity of my Porsche. Damn VW engine :)

Your car is an abandoned Audi project badged as a Porsche (but only because Audi gave up) that has a VW engine :p

Now seriously, bugger you can't remember the email you signed up to boards with, iirc you're the only mod on motorsports - so it's modless now. Did you pm dav, he might sort ya out, decent chap he is.

    Wouldn't that be transmission oil?

    850i M70 = 8l litres dry
    100 cruiser 1HD-FTE = 11.7l iirc
    E39 M57/D30 = 8.5l (haven't serviced it - going with someone elses figure here)

100 squids for the oil alone on the cruiser @ castrol magantec diesel.

Gee, my Almera takes 2.9litres of oil. I can't remember how much the Escort takes, but it's over a pint more than standard (big wing sump fitted)
