Quality fish oil stockists

Thought I'd ask where people get their fish oil caps from.

Looking at mine this morning caps are 1000mg each, but of that 1000mg the breakdowns are only 180mg EPA and 120mg DHA. Is there anywhere that sells a decent quality fish oil in liquid form also?

I don't know much about fish oil in general, but the ones I take are MorEPA:

One 1,000 mg capsule contains an unbeatable 580 mg EPA (approx) and 80mg of DHA (approx)

They are a bit pricey, however, around €30 for 60 capsules. It says on the pack they are 'chewable' (yuk!) and that you can cut open the capsule if you want to put it on something (i.e. in liquid form).

    Ditto.

Afaik it's better quality out of a bottle than in capsules.

Is there really that much difference between fish oil brands? as an example that carlsons one
per 1000mg has 120mg dha, 200mg epa which is the same as the off the shelf holland and barrett one and the generic one from myprotein.

Well it was only when I looked at mine, I realised that only a small percentage of the caps are EPA/DHA (a little over 25% in fact) so where is the rest of the % going (other fatty acids?). I think they vary in quality too, so just trying to track down a better quality oil, which will hopefully yield higher %'s of EPA/DHA and work out a bit cheaper. Which is essentially exactly what token said without the waffle! (Cheers)

But in a nutshell, any I've looked at in H&B/Health shops all seem to be around the same quality and %'s. I had hoped there was a more local option though.

Per ten mls it said in his post

so per gm, assuming 1g=1ml, 1 think 1.25mls=1gm with oils though

    its only
    82.8mg epa
    73.6mg dha

Which is well below the generic fish oil levels.

Also on the vit A front

    'Udo's oil' is another option

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 873 ✭✭✭InKonspikuou2

There's 4000 iu of vitamin A per 10ml (2 teaspoons) of cod liver oil. Around 15,000 iu of vit A a day is perfectly fine. When you are taking too much vit A a day you are up in 100,000 iu levels or something. So i wouldn't worry about taking cod liver oil. I've been taking 2 teaspoons of that daily since i was a baby and never had any of the effects of high dosage.

Hmmn, I thought I had read that 4000iu was the max recommended, but i'll do some more reading on it.

    I use this one,
    http://www.iherb.com/Jarrow-Formulas-EPA-DHA-Balance-2-1-Ratio-420mg-EPA-210mg-DHA-240-Softgels/7929?at=0

Its got 630mg combined epa and dha per capsule. I use two a day. No burps of fish smell/taste later on.

Boots have their own version of Udo's oil too but tis expensive unless they are doing it on a 3 for 2 offer but I found that it starts to get a little rancid before you finish it (while keeping it in fridge). Make sure its the small bottle you buy if you choose to go with that.

Eskimo 3 is my brand - real quality stuff.

Can't find them anywhere in pharmacies round south Dublin city at the minute though! So let me know if you know a place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,366 ✭✭✭cmyk

They are in the low end of EPA/DHA though (80mg/53mg per capsule) compared to others, making them very expensive if going by price per mg.

exactly - eskimo are wayyyy over priced!

Do not bother with udos unless you are a vegie as you still have to convert them to epa and dha so just take the fish oils instead

overall the DHA content should NOT be massively lower than the EPA when you are deciding on your buy

I use these. Similar quality to the MorEPA but a fraction of the cost.

Can you explain what you mean by this?

Same as the other poster I've been taking cod liver oil since I was a 3 month baby, with intermittent 'too lazzy to be bothered' breaks.

I've checked out pretty much all the brands that are available around here and to be honest I've ended up back with seven seas. Compared to the more expensive ones I think you get more bang for buck with seven seas. Its well filtered (a badly filtered one will smell of fish and leave a bad fishy taste/aftertaste), has high epa/dha levels and you can pick it up everywhere. Boots often do a 3 for 2.

Cos of the kids I started using the orange flavoured one years ago..but the highest epa/dha is the active 55 (the one designed for the elderly), but they wouldnt take it..I just take a big slug of it everday.

Mind you they recently changed the recipie and now its very runny, milky looking and way way way too sweet.

exactly what it says really - the Oils in udos still have to be converted to EPA and DHA for your body to use whereas good quality fish oils do not need that conversion.

Less hassle and worry about how well you are making that conversion

A bit OT, but what do people take fish oils for? Apart from helping your skin does it help lose fat or something?

    Thanks

Just do a quick search for the benefits...there's been a huge amount of research on it, everything from heart disease to fat loss. Many western diets in particular lack omega 3's and are over abundant in omega 6's (grain in the diet etc). Fish oil supplements should help redress the balance is my basic understanding.

lots of benefits, but like most things there is a point of diminishing returns i.e. no point taking 50 caps a day ... if you just add lots of it to your existing diet, without making any changes you could be adding lots of extra calories

    Boots - 1000mg
    EPA - 70mg
    DHA - 100mg

Not the best but they were cheap for 180 capsules. I try and take 2/3 every day in work.

Still low in levels, which makes them nearly twice the price of the twinlabs!

Yep, but if you're taking 5-6 caps a day, the vitamin A levels in cod liver oil are pretty high.

The only recommendations with regard to the fish oils is to take them with food, I'd imagine the others say similar. I take between 6-8 daily.
