Ref gifted ye the match, joke of a free near the end, was looking to give ye a shot to level it, We were the better team ref cost us the game hopefully we have someone who can actually ref the next day.

Would you ever stop crying about the ref. yes the free at the end was soft but yee had a 6 point lead a number of times and failed to win. That's hardly the refs fault. Yee also got some very soft frees and were absolutely gifted the second goal.

Eh no that was a shocking call the ref dying to give you the chance to draw level, Baron blatantly fowled near the end as well, the ref's bad decisions won the game for ye end of.

Cunningham got hit in the face and somehow that was a free against him? I' sorry but the ref was poor. Against both sides.

Yes, he gave us a great advantage in that free out against Cunningham for hitting your mans hurley with his faceguard ;) Come off it for Gods sake, he was shoddy from start to finish but ye didn't see out a 6 point lead. No ref to blame for that.

Anyways, great to see Tony Kelly back to his very best. Clare backs seemed to be beaten too often by Waterford men to balls coming in. Plenty learned today for the meeting in 4 weeks.

And I agreed with you that it was not a free but stated that both teams got soft frees which was the case. 1 bad decision did not cost yee the game. Loosing a 6 point lead numerous times and not closing the game out cost Waterford the game

Loosing a lead or not the fact is had it not been for that terrible call Clare would not have won the match, Therefore we were robbed.

Congrats Clare, some brilliant scores from both sides. Seemed like both teams committed more players to their forward line. Looking forward to the championship and would not be surprised to see at least one of these teams playing in september. From a gutted Waterford man.

Had Cunningham got a free in for the slap in the face we might have been level and won the match without getting a soft free but who knows. We gifted a goal to ye aswell, that won't happen too often either.

That terrible call which it probably was(haven't seen a replay) certainly was soft was to tie the game and not win it. Waterford just like Clare had another 30 seconds to win the game and we went and got that point.
It was certainly a smash and grab victory for us but yee were hardly robbed.

Just move on and look forward to the championship game now and let's hope that one won't be decided by any referee decision

Great game. Even though it did not feel like it the 16 second goal made for a great encounter.
Much improved performance from the 1st game by both sides.

Waterford had 5 or 6 yellow cards. I think clare only had one but Waterford had at least twice the number of frees that clare had, not to mention the red card strike to the head that was ignored and a free given to Waterford inexplicably that was converted to a point. Waterford can have no complaints about a biased ref today.

    See you next month

It was far from a red card strike to the head. Connors tried to flick the ball away. Yes it was a free to clare I don't know how the ref missed it but the foul on barron in injury time was a clear free too. I don't begrudge clare winning today as ye finished the game well but connors certainly didn't merit a red card for the foul you are referring too

Despite an overall good performance by both teams Tony Kelly was the difference on the day. Some ref decisions were marginal but that's Hurling.
Clare need to stay grounded after the win as Waterford will be gunning for revenge in the Championship.
Should be a great game on 5th June.

In fairness, Clare fans other way around and ye'd feel just as aggrieved. More than entitled to celebrate the win though and plenty of merit to the argument it was deserved, but a serious pity that it had to be delivered in the fashion it was.

    Enjoy it.

There were clare players sent off for a lot less than that in the last 2 years, but we won't dwell on it

    Just my two cents worth.

Theres no doubt we got fortunate at the end with the Barron free. The game reminded me of the Tipp game a few weeks ago when we came back late to snatch an unlikely victory. I feel proud of lads today for never giving up, they have great spirit this year and have come along way from the mess of last year. Thats what gives me most hope for the coming summer, of we can hang on in there we have match winners in Kelly, McGrath, Conlon, etc. Seeing the likes of Honan and Cunningham coming up with cruical plays at the end, despite being swamped by defenders was good to see.

I hope expectations can be kept down after today, we still have a huge amount of work. I know we were missing half our backline today but we need the McInerney, Ryan and O'Brien's injuries to clear up soon. The half backline did hit alot of ball, but Waterford did beat us aerially in midfield today and we stuggled to get any decent ball inside. We also need to figure out what we are going to do at 14, as SOD and Duggan didnt make any in roads against Waterfords defence. Id start Cunningham there the next day.

June the 5th should be a proper belter, there is nothing between the teams.

Imagine being a point ahead in injury time in a league final, then a soft free being given inside the opposition half, to level it at the death.

Hang on, it happened to us last week !

I actually felt a bit sorry for the referee there.
Admittedly he should have spotted it, but it did happen quickly, and he actually asked his two umpires who were standing right in front of the incident - who were no help at all.

Look at the tight games we lost last year, often to injury time scores - Kilkenny twice in the league, Limerick and Cork in the championship.

Winning a tight game like this us hugely significant I feel , the players kelt really calm.

Prime example being Pat O'Connor, awful mistake in the first half for Waterford's goal. But put it behind him and had a fine second half.

Just on the full forward position. Personally if the pattern of the game stays the way it has been like the last 2 we have to be playing a physical player at FF. this game plan just doesn't suit SOD strengths. He is just too isolated and has 3 defenders around him. He was making runs today and the ball wasn't too bad but he was always surrounded the moment he was on the ball and he just doesn't have the strength to hold all these defenders off.

Yeah, he is completely unsuited to the position. I think the lad needs to work over the winter on his core strength, he is not a big lad but he cant take contact without going to ground.

I think Cunningham is a more rangey player inside, his touch for the Kelly goal was ridiclous. But its likely he wont be as effective as he is better moving off the ball that winning primary possesion. The most taylor made player we have left is Shanagher as he is mobile and very good in the air, but I think its better we bring the teenager off the bench. Its a tricky one.

Ye also got a soft free last weekend. But were not denied a free and then given a soft free against in the same play.

And of course, nobody complained last week either.

Ye should have been down to 14 men - hurley into face guard is far worse than grabing the face guard !!! So no argument!

Ye were not robbed - ye lost - if ye are prepared to play the whistle when it suits ye - ye should also be prepared to play the whistle when it goes against ye (i.e. ye dont like it). Stop whinging!

Twice Waterford were in commanding leads and still lost but are hung up over not getting a free! Sorry but that's hurling we had it last week. Maybe look inwards as to why they couldn't close it out. Hell we gifted ye a goal but sure put the blue blinkers on!

Back to Clare, Kelly in full flow is a joy to watch, not a man in the country would want to mark him when he's on song. However, still lots to work on and our backs need to be a lot sharper when clearing the ball.

A great win but a lot more to do!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,969 ✭✭✭buck65

The ref had to give an indirect free after stopping the game to check the Cunningham incident. No-one saw anything, the player got up and that is how you re-start a game IMO.
Great win from CLare, Colin Ryan was massive when he came on, 2 great scores and back defending too. Clare were the better team and have better hurlers but the Waterford system takes time to pick apart.

How about explaining how at two stages in the game ye were 6 points up and still lost?
