Play TV on TV3 "misleading, dishonest and unfair"

    THE broadcasting watchdog has upheld a string of complaints from angry viewers who claimed that a late-night quiz show on TV3 was "misleading, dishonest and unfair".

    Among the complaints made against 'Play TV' were that viewers were misled that there was a €32,000 jackpot up for grabs, when the eventual winner won a prize of only €1,000.

    The complaints committee of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) upheld 10 complaints against 'Play TV' but rejected a further three.

    One viewer, Mark Nagle, told how he spent nearly €20 calling the show -- at €1.50 a time -- to answer a riddle correctly, but was never given the chance to answer the puzzle on screen.

    Each time, he was informed by a recorded voice that he was "very close" to having his call answered by the studio and to "please try again". The call was then disconnected.

    Misleading

    Mr Nagle said that during the 15 minutes he was repeatedly calling the show, not one call was answered on air, so his calls were not being blocked by others. A winner was only heard on air in the show's last seconds.

    In its response, TV3 said an on-screen ticker made it clear to viewers that more than one call might be required to get through to the presenter live on air.

    It added that since May 2009 the programme had given out €400,000 in prize money.

    The station also claimed that the format of using a premium-rate telephone line and answering a question was used by a large number of other shows and cited RTE's 'The Late Late Show' as an example.

    However, the BAI found that there was a "fundamental difference" between the two as on the 'Late Late' a winner was selected at random, whereas on 'Play TV' a random selection determined whether a viewer got to participate or not.

    Another viewer, Gerry Brennan, told how he entered a quiz in which a photo was shown of the Irish soccer team and the audience was asked to "add all the numbers in the picture".

    However, the right answer, 389, was achieved through counting Roman and Arabic numerals, which were also visible. The BAI said the presentation of the quiz was misleading.

    Meanwhile, three complaints were upheld against Newstalk's 'The Wide Angle' over its biased coverage of the Lisbon Treaty referendum on September 13.

    It was found to have given a "one-sided viewpoint" and prominence to the 'Yes' side after it failed to include a 'No' campaigner on its discussion panel

    Folks please bear with us, I would imagine that this is only a temporary closing of the thread given the fact that the BCI have published their results and they themselves have found that "Play TV" have acted in a "misleading, dishonest and unfair" manner and could face fines of up to €250,000.

    preys on people who less fortunate than others.. it needs to be shut down cos with the country in a bad way people are stuck for money so the ***** are making a profit out of peoples misery.. :mad::mad:

    whats worse is why are they allowed to operate when its clear that its all a scam?????

    Are people being forced to play the game against their will?

    Would you cop yourself on. People who enter those shows deserve to get ripped off, especially when they state not every call will get through to the studio!!!!!!!!!!

    What the fcuk is wrong with people? Are they devoid of taking any responcibility for their actions anymore?

    Fair enough if the games themselves are misleading, as in you'd never be able to get the right answer. That's not fair. But anything else is fair game. It's a form of competition not a charity.

    I hate the bit of the "show" where the bitchy looking redhead starts shouting at the producer that a particular question is too hard and that they should drop it for something else.

    First time I saw it I thought it might be real but then the next night I noticed she was doing the exact same thing for a different question. Clearly the whole nights run must be scripted and paced down to the last detail (eg when the shows opening question always gets a cash prize in the fist minute). Therefore I can't believe that anyone watching it regularily could fail to spot what's going on? :confused:

    On another note I think I might actually have had sympathy for the show if the women on it didn't all look like such skanks.

    This programme annoys me beyond reason! See the black haired one? This is the way she goes on...Say there's an easy spot the difference..

    'right guys, production are out of order here, this is far too hard. I can't see it myself, production..do you hear me, this is not on.     Recently I see they have the number of calls on the bottom of the screen..but only within the last minute. Good to see it..a while back the hosts were saying stuff like 'c'mon I can't believe no one's rung while hundreds are frantically screaming at the tv...'WE ARE...WE'RE RINGING FFS!!!!':rolleyes:

    I heard Matt Cooper joking about the Arabic numerals yesterday.

    These are "Arabic" numerals: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

    It's the Roman numerals that made the problem hard

    There's an identical program on UTV, presumably run by the same company. I like the red haired girl on it, I think she's a former Miss Northern Ireland.

    My Dad won €300 on it and I got through and had my name and my answer up on the board for one of the quizzes. Some guy called Craig was closer to the answer so he won the €4000...bastard.

    I had to laugh when I was listening to Matt Cooper the other day, he had a representative on his show trying to defend play TV, he insisted there was a limit on the amount of times you can enter. Cooper asked him what was the limit, I was honestly expecting it be 5 or something like that, yourman said 50!!! I reckon Matt Cooper was actually trying to hold in his laugh.

    The voiceover did not read out the words "dishonest" and "unfair" in paragraph 1. Also "And Quizzes were conducted unfairly" was omitted from the last paragraph by the voiceover.

    Thats very unfair imo. There are people out there with legitimate problems when it comes to gambling, and this would be classified as gambling. Most people who ring in have answers which are plausable. Often the answers Play Tv have are not. Just have a read through the thread in Gameshows and Quizzes to see. If people lost their money in a transparent way, nobody could have a problem. If the quizzes were fair and had plausable answers whose solutions were posted on the website, there would not be a problem.

    I forgot to mention that Eamon Ryan was on Matt Cooper tonight discussing this and he admitted to ringing up Play TV 15 times on one night without ever getting through cueing much pisstaking from Cooper such as "What does your Wife think of it?" and "Are you putting it on your expenses account?" etc.

    You might want to read my post again. Look gamblers are gamblers. What ever avenue they take they still have a problem. They need help. Its up to the person to get that help. If the game is unfair or misleading i have a prob. Otherwise its fair game.

    Except you exaggerated & embellished both of those examples.

    1) I've seen some of those 'spot the difference' puzzles, and there's only ever one difference. There were no BCC complaints about that particular game either.
    2) It's never just something that the presenter is "thinking of" - it's always written down in a white envelope that's on display behind him/her.

    I'm not defending the show, even though a do believe people should be responsible for their own stupidity & actions, BUT there's no need to just make stuff up either.

    I hate this show not only do they rip you off (which now even the BAI have ruled) but this is not TV it's just lazy and greedy. Is there no such thing as good programs on TV anymore, it's either reality bulls**t or now this kind of crap. It really is time to get rid of the TV now!!

    If you check the Playtv thread, you'll see that there has been a few occasions where there has been more than one difference. I'm talking about those pictures of 16 ladybirds or whatever.

    Fair enough, the callers have to think of a thing written in a white envelope that is on display behind the presenter. Not seeing a big difference here.

    Heard him on Matt Cooper alright, ringing Play TV 15 times.....He said he was asked who the lead singer of U2 was...When he was told Bono was incorrect he kept ringing in..........Took I while for the penny to drop Eamo.......:rolleyes: When people are gonna ring in like this, of course they'll get ripped off.........Shows like this have been on late nite ITV for years.
    Win a few grand for solving a simple puzzle..........Money for nothing.....What could be wrong with that...........Some people are there for the taking..
