It may seem like a stupid question but when referencing a book in your bibliography do you use to the original date of publication for a book or the date your copy was reprinted. E.g. I am using the book "History of the Russian Revolution" by Leon Trotsky as one of my sources and according to the inside page the first paperback edition was 1980 and the seventh printing (my edition) is from 2001. Which year do I use? It's for a first year history essay!

MCR Baby with various X's - you use the reprinted date, so they know which version you're working from. If you think about it, the whole idea of referencing is that they can check the source you're using and find the quotation.

If you were to put down the original publish date the page numbers (or content if a 2nd or 3rd revision) might be different and they won't be able to find it.

    So use 2001.

If the original printing date was significant - which it may be in this case I don't know, you could either say something like "Leon Trotsky's History of the Russian Revolution, originally published in 1980 when x, y, significant things happened, contains ..."

You see that's what I thought but then my head got all mixed up and confused (as always in my life!) so i thought I better check! thanks a mill!

I am nearly certain you put the date of the edition you have.

When this happens I usually reference it like this:

Trotsky, Leon. History of the Russian Revolution (Location: Publisher, 1980, rpt. 2001)

I've done that on several occasions and never got corrected on it.

Alternatively you could also do it like this:

Trotsky, Leon. History of the Russian Revolution. 7th edition (Location: Publisher, 2001)

It depends on which is more important, what I mean is, if you are referencing the body of Trotsky's work, then I would go with the first one, but if you are also using the introduction/preface/additional notes (which are usually added on in later editions) then I would use the second one.

    Hope that's of some help.

I have a week loan from the library, can I renew it either online or in the library? Or do I have to bring it back and wait for it to be re-shelved?

Some books have a waiting period between returning them and the same person taking them out again. Although you've had the book a while so I'd say this isn't the case. Check it out to be sure. Email the library peeps see what they say.

Have you tried renewing it online?

I tried logging onto the library system but it asks you for an access code which doesn't seem to be my student number/password combo:confused:

Nah, you can't renew it. It says on their website, I must have missed that.

Cure for a really, really raw sore throat?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,195 ✭✭✭✭Michellenman

Apparently gargling warm water mixed with cayenne pepper is really good but I've never tried it myself.

Other than that all I can recommend is the usual of honey, lemon and glucose mixed up, to soothe it.

    Feel better :)

Where would one purchase a printing card for the pacrs.

That chap in the Arts block isn't very helpful. Kept pointing at the top up machine a while back when I asked could I buy one, so I just left.

    Kinda need one now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,195 ✭✭✭✭Michellenman

Ha, you get them from the top up machine!! :D

There's instructions on the front, one set tells you how to top up and the other tells you how to dispense a card :p:D

I bet you feel a bit silly now :P

Ah so there was a method to his madness then.

Better get it right first time then don't want to look like a fool messing around with it.

Think I'm asking this in the right place, apologies if not...I'm going to be out in NUIM on Saturday night, wondering about getting a taxi from the college back into Dublin city centre. Anyone got any idea about what kind of cost I'm looking at, and/or phone numbers of taxi firms that will send cabs to the campus in the early hours of Saturday morning? Much appreciated!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,081 ✭✭✭LeixlipRed

It'll cost a small fortune. Good luck! And any cab company will pick you up, the campus is in the town.

If you tell them you only have 30 quid left they'll usually do it for 30.

What is the cheapest photocopying service in Maynooth? I've to make 20 copies so I don't want to be racking up the expenses if at all possible. Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 433 ✭✭CnaG
