How old are you anyway?

I know it might be done to death here, but I was asked recently by a little snotty nosed, no older than 18, "How old are you anyway"

I was buying razors blades, a toothbrush and conditioner. Approached the counter and the assistant looked at me (I was dressed in office wear, just finished work) and then at my products, no 'hi', 'hello' etc, just "How old are you anyway?"
I was so stunned by the question, I went really red and replied '23' to which she replied "Is that right?" (in a really 'your lying' tone), 'you look like someone dressed up to look older than you actually are, you've a young face'.

I know, I should have asked what relivance it was to my purchases but leaving the shop, I felt incredibly insulted (may sound stupid to some, but it was how I felt). She was clearly younger than me and I felt intimadiated by her, how ridiclous.

Anyway, my question is, how do you feel being told you look younger/older than you actual age? (and how do I make myself 'look my age' :( )

I think they have to ask for age or id when you buy razor blades now, maybe to stop pesky kids from butchering the old people in their estate with a pack of Mach 3's

I'm almost 23 and I get told that I look very young and innocent. I also find that because I have some sort of baby faced thing going on my family often forget what age I am, and stick me on the kids table when out for events. My 17 year old cousin, and now my 18 year old brother get seats at the growed up table.... and I don't. Either they forget what age I am, or I'm just a baby sitter to them

Supposedly I will be glad of this baby face in ten years time. Here's hoping :D

Only when your not wiping food off their faces and trying to stop them throwing food at each other or you. Also means I spend a lot of time guarding my wine glass or coffee cup, and usually end up with a little one cuddled up on my knee asleep. I hate being the eldest, generally by many years.

Wish they would realise that I'm old enough for the big table, especially now that I'm generally the one driving home.....

This happens to my sister a lot, going to 15 films she'll be asked what age she is and she is 24. She hates it but I keep telling her its a good thing!

If im out with the BF and his friends (10 years + older then me) I often get asked for I.D............ but normally I'm ok.

The real prob comes when he gets asked for I.D to make sure he is still 'young' enough to get into the 'cool' clubs

People who don't know me often think I am older though purely because I am more mature then people my age.

    Im 21.
It really depends on what I wear. if im wearing a tracksuit and dont have make up on I only look about 16.
Normally dressed I still only look about 18.
Went to the cinema a few weeks back and got asked for ID going into an over 18's film, wtf.
But on a night out I'm usually the only one out of my friends asked for ID:(

Exact same happened to me (it was actually a lotto ticket for my mum) a few weeks back.

Came back with ID and was seen by a different person behind the counter. They didn't ask.

I got told the other day I was too young to get into a PG-13 movie. I'm 19 :o.

I haven't gotten ID'd since I was 15 *tear* I really don't think I look that old and people are always surprised when I tell them my age (21). I even got asked in the pub where I work was I the owner's wife and he's 40! So humiliating!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,756 ✭✭✭Jules

Think i have been asked for id once in my life. I'm taller and boarder than most people and always looked a little bit older. It was great when i was younger. But I'm 29, 30 in october and people tell me i don't look my age now. So either they are lying or i have looked the same way most of my life!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,469 ✭✭✭Pythia

I would think I look my age (24) but I got id-ed during the week buying a mini bottle of wine for cooking. They think I could be 7 years younger! :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 190 ✭✭Dublin141

I get a little offended when people say you're so young to have kids. Then they look at me with pity. So I gesture at my OH and say I'm older than him and they get all shocked and stutter an apology which is kinda insulting for him. :D

I'm 26 so people tend to think I started having children in my early teens or something.

I love getting id'd. I'm 24 now and it doesn't happen as often, but a guy asked for my id the other day when I was buying some wine and he looked skeptical even after I showed him my passport. I think he's my soulmate!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,137 ✭✭✭Monkey61

Oh it's great fun. I'm 26 and frequently get accused of being 15 or younger. I really don't look that young, but do rejoice with every extra year that passes that I am still getting Id'd. The look on people's faces when they see the date of birth on my passport is brilliant!

I'm very interested to see how long it goes on for. If I'm still being asked when I'm 30 - then happy days.

I'm tall, and always have been (5' 6" when I was 12;)) , so I always looked a little older and never had a problem getting in anywhere. I think I've been ID'd three times in my life! I've never been in the habit of carrying ID because I've never needed to. I've noticed though in the last year or 18 months that a number of people have told me they thought I was 24 or 25, based on my appearance! I'm actually 27 but it doesn't bother me one way or the other. Nobody's ever mistaken me for 30, which probably would bother me :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

I'm 25, and I've been ID'd as recently as a few weeks ago for drink. At this stage, I just find it hilarious, and a bit of a compliment that I look much younger! I've never really looked my age though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,954 ✭✭✭✭Larianne

When I started college this year one of the girls thought I was 18. I'm 27. :) In fairness I don't look that young. But I don't act 27 either.

I got id'd twice buying booze in 2008 when I was 35, generally I look about 30 but being id'd was ridiculous.

I didn't have any on me either had to go down to the car and get it.

Did that make you angry ? :D

edit im 28 and look about 25 or maybe a little yuonger so....

When I was living in Manhattan other parents used to think I was my kids' nanny. But not surprising in that many women there wait until they are 40 to have kids (hence you see lots of twins and triplets in the playgrounds- IVF!)

No it was just weird, both times it was in tesco, with a queue behind me.

  • I get ID'ed every single time I buy alcohol. Usually get my ID questioned as well. Strange how that never happens in the airport, when it's 1000 times more important, and only when I'm buying a mini bottle of red wine to put in my pasta sauce. I'll be 25 this year, so it's getting to the stage now where it's a bit of a p*ss take. I've been told I look young to randomers, but when people know me and have talked to me, they think I'm older, like 28 or 29.

Yeah I'm 25 and regularly asked when going into clubs, don't mind that, I see it as a compliment really. I find it a big problem at work though. I often get the wary glance up and down followed by " are you qualified" or " you're very young to be working".

What do you do? I get that quite a lot (I'm a teacher)

Some people think I'm much older than I am, some think I'm much younger than I am. I work in a hospital and work with a lot of elderly patients who all always ask me "when will you be qualified?" or "aren't you too young to be working?" - "no, how old do you think I am?" - "about 15 or 16" :pac:

People under the age of 60 always think I'm older than I am though. I've always been quite mature for my age I suppose, so people who get to know me generally think I'm much older. I've probably been asked for ID in Ireland about 5 times, when I try to buy drink when I'm in the UK - which I am quite a lot 9 times out of 10 I'm asked for ID. Funniest thing is handing over the Garda Age Card and being asked ''what IS this?" :pac:

I think I look older in my running gear, looking a mess with no make up etc than I do when I'm dressed up though. :D

Physio, apparently its par for the course until you're about 40. Yeah I can imagine teachers getting it a lot, especially with older parents!

I honestly can't remember when I was Id'd last, I've been going to pubs regularly since I was 17 and never got Id'd. I've always looked a good bit older than I am I guess!!

I got carded at a pub in town a few months ago. I nearly bought the bouncer a drink for making my night. :D

I've been told I look about 6/7 years younger than I am. But as my sister so eloquently put it recently "doesn't matter if you look all shiny and new on the outside, inside your eggs are dying".:pac:

Not a razor in sight?? doubt it'd work :P I like facial hair I look weird without it, I've had it for the vast majority of what I can remember.

I'm 31 and told I look about five/six years younger. It's flattering now but annoyed me when I was younger.

I'm twenty four and get ID'd all the time, I don't actually think I even look that young?!

It's not something that bothers me though, although I don't take it as a compliment either, maybe I will if it's still happening a couple of years from now!

I never used to get id`d before I was 18 and on the night of my 18th I was asked and they wouldn`t let me in :(

I'm now 25 and people obviously think I'm older because they are always asking when I'm gonna have kids and stuff! I look about 23 or so - not that much of a difference!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,264 ✭✭✭Pretty_Pistol

I wrote about this before on here but a few months ago a security man in a hospital asked if I was over 13. I'm 23! I thought it was funny. I usually get asked for ID. I don't mind really. I'd rather look younger than older.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 952 ✭✭✭bills

i know i look a lot younger than i am too. It does not help that i am petite too. I must admit i am quite conscious of the fact too but there really isnt much you can do about it!

ppl always mistake me for been way younger than im am, they generally guess my age as 22/23 - il be 31 in 2 weeks:D:D used to hate it, but now i actually like been mistaken for been much younger! My ma is 71 but she looks like she only in her 50's - hope im like that!!
