most of the good ones like harris or deben go on to a QD stud. expect to pay about 80 euro some may be up to 150

This is your standard 6-9" Bipod.
    1A2-BR.jpg

They come in an assortment of sizes. The two numbers represent minimum and maximum heights. So a 9 - 13 would be 9" at the lowest and 13" at the highest.

As FD said they usually attach via a standard number 6 Bipod adaptor for Euorpoean rails or a stud prebuilt into the rifle.

    Harris No.6 Adaptor
    Harris_6A-S2.jpg
    QD stud.

    B1731.jpg

To fit a Bipod you unscrew the screw in the centre of the bipod, split the clasps, place them around the QD stud then keeping the bipod straight tighten the screw of the bipod until it levers itself against the stock. Other Bipods (such as a Versa Pod) can swivel allowing the shooter to straighten the rifle if shooting from an unlevel surface.
    150-050-long.jpg
Again these come in a number of different shapes and sizes including different attachments for fiiting to different models of rifles.

There are a number of manufacturers and now that the patent on Harris' Bipods have run out a number of companies are doing exactly the same Bipod but for slightly/alot less (nearly sure thats right). However be careful what you buy. A €15 Bipod id €15 for a reason. An €80+ Bipod has been tried and tested.

    A few sites.

    Harris Bipods - www.harrisbipods.com
    Deben - www.deben.com
    Ebay - http://sports.shop.ebay.ie/Hunting-/7301/i.html?_trkparms=65%253A12%257C66%253A2%257C39%253A1%257C72%253A2471&_nkw=Bipod&_catref=1&_dmpt=UK_SportingGoods_Hunting_ShootingSports_ET&_ipg=200&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Nearly all gun shops stock and supply a good quantity of Bipods so look around before buying as prices can vary significantly between dealers.

ya could try a set of shooting sticks to
ya can get them on ebay cheap
    http://cgi.ebay.ie/Extending-Bi-pod-Rifle-Rest_W0QQitemZ300280827261QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_SportingGoods_Hunting_ShootingSports_ET?hash=item45ea21cd7d

i think there better for rough shooting because if your in long grass or anything ya can shoot sitting kneeling or standing

or if your a handy man and ya want really cheap ones buy extending walking sticks in lidl or aldi for about a tenner and join together with a gutter bolt and a few rubber or plastic spacers

but its your decision after all

+1 on the shooting sticks but ya don't need to go to the UK. Sean in Stakelums, Thurles has the same sticks, for less. Only bought a new set a week ago. Exact same set as on ebay. 2 Feet to 7+ feet.

    Another option for ya.

At the moment its the stuff from the old place being transferred. They were still putting up shelves when i was down with him last. But the entire building is huge and even though there are 3 different areas its all the one building so you can walk from Gun shop to hardware then to home furnishings, plus they have a food court. Seriously nice set up. I believe he has a bigger strong room built and is getting more stuff as he has more space.

    Definitely worth a trip.

Looking at 2 Harris bipods myself on the website.
They are both the same price, both swivel ones but whats the difference between "standard legs" and one with "leg notches"??
    Do they ship to Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,204 ✭✭✭elius

Leg notches help you set the legs at various heights.

APO -> Army Post Office/Air Force Post Office
    AE -> Armed Forces Europe

The US have an extra set of ZIP codes that correspond to military facilities (or at least sorting offices) around the world.

    Dusty,

The deben swivel ones are just as good as the Harris bipods and you can pick them up for around €83 and you'd probably get them cheaper direct from deben. The last time I ordered from deben I done it online, and I got charged an extra €26 for shipping, when I got the item which was a spare battery for a lamp there was no fuse with it. I rang them up instead of ordering off the net, they sent it by ordinary post. It only took 3 days to arrive as opposed to 2 days to ship and was waaaaay cheaper to do it that way.

    Regards

    deeks

Bipods with notched legs allow you to set the legs at various yet preset heights. ts good if are shooting from a level surface. Simply check/count the notches of one leg and set the other for the same amount. However you cannot set them between notches so the have to be set at the intervals the notches are set for. If shooting from an uneven surface there may still be cant in your rifle.

The bipods without the notches are good for the fact that you can set them at any height. They are not limited by preset heights of the notches. However to get the legs the same height if shooting, again, from a level surface you need a rifle level or to leave the legs of the bipod forward and make sure they are even inlenght before folding out to shoot. If shooting from an uneven surface though you can pull each leg out to any lenght and eliminate any cant in the rifle.

You would really want to decide the main purpose of the rifle and determine which bipod with which features suit you best. Of course the swivel bipods negate the need for this decision as they do all this for you irrespective of notched legs or not.

I'd be using it for fox and grey crows mostly. Odd bit of target. Want to get into target shooting, but need plenty of practice first

I had a Versa Pod on the 6.5 and for hunting it was great. Does all the things a bipod should do without any of the drawbacks associated with going for one particular bipod (with its individual features).

When i was shooting targets though it was a little annoying. Not only had i to hold the rifle steady (for up and down) i also had to work on keeping it steady from canting. Thats why i never put the Sako Bipod on the TRG. Apart from the ridiculous price tag (somewhere in the region of €450) it was a swivel bipod. I stuck a Harris (non swivel) on both rifles and never looked back.

A swivel bipod would suit the hunting perfectly but would not overly effect you if shooting targets and as you seem to do more hunting work i would pick a bipod to suit your hunting.
