With the weather and everyone falling on their asses.(Apparently 5000+ patients have visited hospitals etc with fall injuries since cold snap started.)
German friends suggested something to my wife a few days back that they do in germany to prevent slipping on ice.
To prevent slipping on ice put a pair of socks on over your shoes and you won't slip on the ice.My wife and her friends tried it today and they all said it worked for them.

Don't know if it will help, but if it prevents someone getting injured its all to the good.
Now i just have to figure out how to get these damned socks on the car.GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

My mother's mad for wearing her socks over shoes in this weather. She swears by it. You should see her flying down the hill near us.:D

It does work and to be honest I'd rather be vertical wearing socks over my shoes than flat on my back looking up the hairy nose of a stranger as they wobble around the place trying to pick me up!

Don't the socks get soggy after a while in the ice and lose their effectiveness? I'm supposed to be going into town on Sat and I'm seriously considering the socks over the shoes option.

The weather has been wicked and I've fallen on my arse so frequently in the last fortnight that I get to eyeball the Eastern European Big Issue sellers at knee level with some regularity.

Back in the 80's when we got serious snow I tried this as a kid, although one racket was a cheap wooden one and the other was a huge metal one with loose strings...Despite that,

    It didnt work.

And dozens of other similar products. Far more effective. Though everywhere in the Ireland and UK is out of stock at the moment.

As a regular traveller to Norway and having fallen over time out of number I began wonderin, how the fook the natives could walk on ice and snow in NORMAL footwear when I, in my hiking boots kept falling over..

So, I did watch them natives and noticed they mostly walk the same.. heel to toe and bolt upright. I adopt that style consciously when walking on ice and snow, seems to work well (until I forget and slouch about and go a*** over t*t :) )...

When I was a child it wasn't unusual to see people use old socks over shoes for grip in winter.

However these days I'm wearing THESE BOOTS (€100 in most camping shops in Dublin) and even counting the best boots the army provided me with and all the other boots I've used over the years these are head and shoulders above 'em all.

Warm, waterproof, breathable and completely slip resistant (so far!).

Socks over shoes just reminded me of the simpsons.

In Rand McNally people wear hats on there feet and burgers eat people.

Good idea on the socks though but in fear of being seen by anybody Id rather take the fall.

there you go (how come you cant embedd pictures in AH)
Weissenfels WeissSock Tyre Socks - Weissenfels WeissSocks are really quick & easy to use. Unlike conventional snow chains, grip is provided by a strong textile surface with no metal parts. Assuming sufficient hand room exists to pull them over the top of the tyre, they are extremely simple to fit and automatically self centre as you drive. As there is nothing to chafe around the back of the tyre, they are ideal for cars with limited clearances between the wheel, wheel arch and suspension struts

oh yeh and why do my safety shoes not slip on ice but my hiking boots are all over the place .. weird

I have my own path-gritting mechanism as seen in the great escape.

I have two bags of sand down the legs of my trousers and a release pin which can be released to grit the path underneath me.

    * Am now patenting the idea of glueing sandpaper on the soles of my shoes for grip.

I've wore socks over runners to get into a nightclub that has a shoes only policy..

but socks over your shoes for the snow? Thats just daft!!

Whats all this about falling on yer arse?
I just relax and take the hit across my shoulder blades/upper back thingy and keep my head forward so I dont get a bad slap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,408 ✭✭✭Captain_Generic

I wacked a few staples into the bottom of my trainers earlier, absolutely no problems so far:D (soles need to be thick enough though)

Instead of wrapping a sock over your shoe, another tip is to put a strip of brown adhesive bandage (like this) along the length of the sole of your shoe, or a few short strips across the width. It won't make you look as ridiculous as wearing a sock over your shoes and provides good traction.

And you can staple it on! As long as theres staples involved i'm sold:D

So far I've only slipped once (not counting the times I've been sledding). All I got was a bruise on my thigh. You just have to be careful and watch every step to not slip...if you're on a patch of ice, don't walk, slide.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,043 ✭✭✭Wossack

fell over trying haul my socks on over my shoes and banged by head off the dresser

Why are people saying that would look stupid? The same people are probably the very muppets that took their tracksuits into their socks for no apparent reason!?
