Very, very interesting run from GFS.... what a setting... you don't see that every decade! Another arctic "punch" already coming from northern Scandinavia?

ESB will not cut you off, Board Gais might not either but Airtricity (scotish and sothern) may do so gladly but at the moment they are dependant on the ESB to do it so its unlikly.

    I would disagree with that...

I had a dispute with ESB. They threatened to shut me off last week unless I paid them a ridiculous amount of money (800e - it's a long story; it's since been resolved in my favour) even though I told them I had kids in the house and would lose my heating...

They did NOT care about that at all.

Recommended I stay with "friends or relatives".

    They're incompotent and bloody minded.

So I paid them their bloodmoney, they kept me on and I switched.

They have since admitted their mistake, though they refused to apologise.

Worst customer support ever. May they rot in... well, you get me point.

    They gritted the road!!!!

Saw a wee yellow van earlier and when I went out with the dogs. thought they had worn the snow to the metal.

But no; two lines of sand/grit.

Amazing; they said they had none?

NB went to look at the sky; mountains shrouded in low cloud, except for a golden line to the west. Still dark and heavy to the north and east.

    Not sure what that means?

Guys check GFS from Monday eve till Tuesday late (the 12Z run).
It's mindbogging. Could be another event similar to the one on 29th/30th. Massive low comin from the atlantic meeting arctic air from the north.
    Keep your eyes peeled :)

Edit: unfortunately the flow looks southeasterly this time, so not enough cold from the E.. but who knows how it will look in the end?

GFS also looks promising for Kerry and Cork:
    Rtavn844.png

Has increased ppt by a great deal from the 06Z run.

It actually gives steady snow for almost 20 hrs straight on Monday for Kerry.

    Snow porn at its best:D

hmm that didn't turn out too good on the 29th/30th?! still think it will all go pearshaped just like today in the west.

Uk braced for a night that could be as low as -20c in oxfordshire! Villan hope you have your thermo ready? We have to compete with these Brits!

ME still have their weather warning up.

    Weather Warning

    Issued at 07 January 2010 - 12:30

Outbreaks of rain, sleet or snow will spread into the northwest and west today and early tonight - and may affect the southwest and south tonight also - but will clear away from all parts during the night. Further accumulations of 2 to 6 cms of snow may occur in places.
Widespread frosty and icy conditions across the country will persist also with patchy freezing fog.

-3 in Castleknock, Blan at the moment with heavy fog. Did not get above -2 here all day. - 1, Dublin City centre max. I believe it has got much milder in Kerry, Clare and Galway regions - up to +5, 6 degrees. Not here however and not likely for the next weel or 10 days.:D:D:D:D:D:D

just look at the 3 hour update it seems a very weak affair at 6pm.

True, ATM this looks like rain all over again. BUT what we need to look at is the tendency, not the actual model run. It will change quite a few times till we reach Monday :D

-3.5c here now. Oil burner stopped working last night so relying on the wood stove now. At least that wont fail. About 6 inches of snow around.

Regarding the ice, just find a place that you KNOW is only a foot or two deep but has a good wide expanse. If the ice breaks then you are OK. In the reservoir near us there are places like this and it is perfectly safe. But I only know this from fishing with waders in the summer. There are other places in the lake with immediate drop offs to 20 or 30 feet. It would be suicidal to walk there.

better than a south westerly flow. in a south easterly wind areaa furthest to the north and west have a better chance of snow- even more so when then the milder air has to travel over extemely cold ground and deeply entrenched cold air

Clear skies overhead here at the moment...been scanning the horizon to the west for any signs of cloud.
Starting to build a little now, but nothing too ominous-looking...
On the other hand, I've had a headache building since 3pm, so may be something on the way. Will keep you posted.

Gee; that is just dreadful... words fail.

    So sorry that happened.

Just now I have rigged up a metal tray across the coal fire and am boiling kettles on that to save electricity.
