Right this is the second time I've had to write this, so I am not happy.

I hope all of you attacking Monty Python are taking the piss.

To say that the British accent makes humour shít is completely ridiculous. In many of the Python sketches, a main character was a pompous upper-class twit. That wouldn't have worked without a British accent.

'British humour'. By that, I take it you mean subtle and intelligent? As opposed to American comedy, lazy and obvious jokes, pointless slapstick (Monty Python perfected slapstick down to a tee, it was never used unnecessarily and each performer was excellent, still managing to maintain an air of dignity in a way only they could).
Now take Friends as an example of American comedy. In the first few series, the writing was clever and slightly more intelligent. As it progressed, the writing and comedy got lazier, more 'American'. 'American comedy' is, in essence, puerile and childish.

Now I can't pretend all of the Python's sketches were genius; there would quite a few duds. But in between those duds were some gems. The Argument Clinic, Dead Parrot, Spanish Inquisition and Hells Grannies sketches are some of the finest comedy sketches every written.
The group owes it's success to the talents of each individual. Every one of the six is/was, in their own right, a fantastic comedy performer. The group are, without doubt, the most influencial comedy ensemble in history. Hugely successful, and amazingly influencial. They've shaped modern-day comedy as we know it.

Just for the record, you do know who each of the Python's cite as their main influence? Spike Milligan - an Irish citizen. Just sayin'

I stopped reading after that. I never said that, I said the show/film/whatever was terrible. I never said it was because of the accent.. It would take more than an accent to make me watch it.

I disagree. Just the way English people speak just makes most things they say not funny. American accent allows better delivery.

Why it was in response to the above. Not to anything you said.

Monthy Python is awful tbh. If you want real comedy watch Everybody Loves Raymond.

Sorry, my reply was directed just in general at the posters who'd made negative comments, not quite sure why I quoted yours.

That was the second time I had to write it, I couldn't be arsed faffing around with multiquotes.

I'm sorry, the whole thing was funny at first, but it's just going too far now. This thread and some of the posts in it are just a totally unnecessary. (I don't mean to single you out phlegms, just using your post as an example :o)

They don't like Monty Python, so what? None of you are in any position to tell people what they should like, and that you hate them for it if they don't. Different strokes for different folks and all that jazz. Some of you need to grow up.

I like Monty Python, and as much as I disagree with the girls' opinions, I'll argue all day for their right to it.

Yeah, and so do I and as I said, there's nothing wrong with that, but this whole thing is bordering on bullying tbh.

Agreed. Less of the personal remarks folks. Monty Python is something to be enjoyed, and so is Boards.ie, so let's go about this in a way that doesn't stop anyone from feeling happy here.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,882 ✭✭✭phlegms

I think saying its bullying is taking it one step too far tbh..

Heres my two cents anyways. This isnt a personal attack on anyone or their sense of humour, its just that Monty Python is so highly regarded because it really crosses all barriers. Its one of the few truly "trans-generational" (made up wurds lul) comedies, in that it is as highly regarded when it came out as it is today. It also has a huge and wide ranging fanbase. Personally, I cant see why anyone wouldnt enjoy at least a few of their sketches. It really is hard to dislike it tbh, hence our disbelief when we realized some people on here don't like it.
Calling this thread bullying is completely stupid. Its the internet, don't take it so seriously and get over yourself tbqh if you think this is anything other than a reasonably lighthearted discussion..

Ah some people don't get some comedy , I don't get some comics where other people do .

The thing about monty python is not just what they did in comedy , it is what they did for comedy also .

    The Simpsons (1989-)
Creator Matt Groening: ''I just saw this streak in British humor of whimsical surrealism with just a hint of cruelty, and I found that incredibly appealing.''

South Park (1997-) Cocreator Matt Stone: ''They talked different, dressed different. Python was surreal and absurdist — so f---in' smart.''

    Saturday Night Live (1975-)
Tina Fey: ''Sketch endings are overrated. Their key was to do something as long as it was funny and then just stop and do something else.''

    Austin Powers (1997-2002)
Mike Myers: ''Everything I've ever done can be distilled to at least one Python sketch. If comedy had a periodic element table, Python would have more than one atom on it.''

Without Monty Python there would have been no Fawlty Towers, The Young Ones, Blackadder, The Fast Show, Little Britain or The League Of Gentlemen .No group has ever offended as many people as monty python did, while remaining funny, tasteful and loved.

I wholly endorse this product and/or service thread.

Holy Grail is made of far too many kinds of awesome, not to mention the rest. Anyone ever noticed the credits in Holy Grail actually? :D

    I'm actually a legend.

By pure coincidence, I found this:

    Fo'real.

I saw Spamalot in London a year or too ago, it was excellent. The songs were hilarious and the ending was fantastic, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I still listen to the album a good bit. And I got my very own coconut shells ... they do sound just like a horse! :D

It seems this thread has turned from Monty Python education to Monty Python appreciation, but that's really out of necessity I suppose. In any case, long may this thread continue!
