well dropped a deposit today on a beretta 686 e o/u new shotgun .i am very new to the game and joined a local clay pigeon shooting grounds a few months ago. since then i have won a trophy at a novice shoot at the grounds and placed top 3 the other 3 times . not bad considering i dont own a gun yet (USED THE CLUBS GUN) just wanted to know peoples view on berettas. it was the gun that seemed to fit me best .my budget was about half of what i ended up paying but the gun seemed to fit me the best. also is there any competitions for the likes of me that is only getting started . thanks

I love them. I think they are lovely to look at (design wise), i have never had a shotgun fit me as well as a Beretta, the reliability, performance, resale value, everything. They are indeed the full package. So much so that years ago when i made the leap to a Beretta i have nothing else since. Game gun, clay gun all of them Beretta. You won't go wrong with it.

PS - Congratulations on the new shotgun, well may you wear it.

    i use a beretta 686e
    cant fault it
i tried out alot of other guns for fit and none suitted better than the beretta

The thing i like best about the Beretta (in general) is no matter which model i pick up (semi, o/u, etc) or use each fits me as well as the other. I have never had this with any other make.

If you have just popped in your application i would say you are looking at between 3-4 weeks. Some areas seem faster others slower but this seems to be the average (from people i've spoke to).

With regards to competitions start taking part in as many club open shoots as you can and ask a few lads here about joining the ICPSA. I'm not a member so i won't give advice on specifics i know nothing about. Here is their website www.icpsa.ie

Correct. I use the 682e Gold sporting with 30" barrels and extended Optimachokes. Great gun. Good for clays and game alike (although i use it mainly for the clays)

... if its choked it would be the sporter right

Yes, but some of Beretta trap guns also come with chokes. As to what extent i do not know (as in i don't know what kind and how variable they are) as i've never owned a trap gun and genuinely don't know a huge amount about them, but you can be sure there are lads here that can tell you more.

Trust me though, you have made a good buy with the 686 and if you're winning with others you'll do very well when you get the swing of your own.

nice to get some advice and help on these things as a beginner. it has chokes alright but they are internal (if thats what they are called ) comes with a few in the case. what value would you put on the gun taking into consideration its new.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,695 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

You 686 should come with 5 chokes all of them Mobilchokes. As in they sit flush with the end of the barrel. You can get Victory chokes for it which will extend 1" beyond the barrels but thats a thought for another day.

If she is the 686e Sporting, brand new, it would run around €2000 -€2200 depending on where you bought it and if she has the adjustable memory cheek piece or not.

well thats good to hear cause i paid 1800 for it and the lad said that it usually retails at 2150 so your on the ball. and he said he wil throw in a few shells too when the time comes to pick it up so happy days. and have you fired alot out shells out of yours and how is it holding up

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,695 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

Thats a good price, you done well there. I heard Beretta were dropping the price of their guns to increase sales so with what you said now would seem to be a good time to buy.

I use mine most every weekend, mostly for the clays. I only shoot club level. Too many other passions to focus on it properly. Maybe in time. Best thing about clay pigeon shooting, no best before date for the shooter :D.

I usually buy my cartridges by the 1000, and they can last either 2 weeks or a month but usually no more than the month. I will not part with this gun so i'm not concerned with keeping the usage down for resale purposes. My next shotgun will be another buy rather than a trade.

She is as tight now as when i got it (no smart a**e comments). Good gun maintenance is key. Keep it well cleaned, oiled and cared for and it will last as long as you.

sounds like a bullet proof gun (pardon the pun!)i looked at your pics on your profile you have a nice collection !!wildlife must be scarce around your way now with all them guns. open shoots are the way to go so in so far as buiding up a bit of experience. my club is more than willing to let me borrow there gun but what is the story with going to other grounds do they usually have a few on site that they lend out or is a case of no gun no shoot.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,695 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

Dedicated clay ranges are set up (both gun wise and insurance wise) for visitors but other ranges may not be, so its best to adopt the no gun no shoot rule unless you hear more from a member of the range you wish to shoot at.

Thats only my opinion, i'm hoping someone here more in touch with the legalities of this could shine some more light on the situation.

Its good to hear you have insurance before the gun, but as you said, unless someone else says otherwise, check before traveling.

ya exactly thanks . i said i might as well get all the formallitys in order as to not pi** off anyone . thanks very much for all your help and if anyone else including yourself has any tips on clay shooting or even any experiences with the 686 i would love to hear about them

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,695 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

No hassle lad. I'll take a back seat for a while now and let a few others get a word in. There are some championship level shooters on here (surprised they haven't already posted) that can give you quality advice. Anything i would tell you would be what suits me best and may not suit you, plus the last thing i want to do is give you advice that may not suit and end up harming any progress you were making (ie - bad advice)

Anyway, best of luck with your new gun and happy and safe shooting.

welcome to shooting:D..... your license shouldnt have any problems with your insurance already in place...also on the NARGC myself.. a few friends o mine use berrettas and have no complaints with them......
flapper shoots wouldnt have guns for hire(at least i have never seen it)... but the big ranges prob would but notice prior to leaving may be required.......or at least would be a good idea as ezridax already said,
usually 6 weeks waiting for licenses in athlone region anyway. though with the new ones... GOD ONLY KNOWS!!!

cool good to know they have no problems! cant wait to get going with my own gun now hopefully time will fly.:D

I've the 682 E Gold High Rib Trap and it has multichokes which include two full chokes which I use for practice. It also has an adjustable stock.

Hard to know really - a lot of it is "fashion". However, it does help keep you head straight up rather than bending forward at the neck. I also find I can see targets a fraction earlier as they come up either side of the thin rib - although that's probably just in my head:). Still, it's a perceived advantage to me and that's what counts a lot of the time.
