Condoms

Me and group of friends got talking about this the other day, do women still expect men to be the ones who get condoms? reason is one of my gf's friends, who's known for sleeping around in a big way, told she's never bought condoms in her life as she'd be "too embarassed" (but sleeping with someone she met literally ten minutes before at a taxi rank after a club isnt for some reason, but thats a different topic) in fact she's often had unprotected sex as the guy she hooked up with didnt have any on him and she wouldnt ask one of her housemates for one
I couldnt believe that a woman of 25 years old would be embarassed buying condoms in Boots or somewhere, theres probably hundreds of people a week who do the exact same without batting an eyelid. In my own relationship i buy them but my girlfriend had some in a drawer when we first met from her previous relationship, didnt bother me at all was glad she had the sense to have them instead of not using anything even though she was on the pill. One of her other friends, who's a bit of a ditz, saw my gf drop her handbang once and a condom was among the things that fell out, and she jokingly called her a slapper for having one, wtf since when is it wrong for a woman to make sure she has contraception on her

Wasn't there a thread about this a few months ago where the overwhelming majority said everyone should have condoms?

Funny story. My second boyfriend and I lost our virginity together, so to speak. In the lead up, we went to go get condoms. But he was so embarrassed he wouldn't get out of the car and I had to run into the store by myself and get them.

So no, I'm not embarrassed to buy condoms. :D

But I don't carry them on me or keep any in my home. It's not a conscious decision, it's just that I've never been in a situation where I've had to say, "Oh shoot - wish I had a condom!"

Arse, never did a search, if there was can a mod lock this?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭Herbal Deity

I don't understand people who will have unprotected sex if they don't happen to have any condoms on them.

    Like, What. The. Fuck?

My gf and I once went a month without penetrative sex because both of us were very busy and kept forgetting to buy condoms. There are other ways to get each other off, and it's just not worth the risk.

Lol i will say the first time i bought condoms in a shop i was a tad embarassed, i;d never buy them out of a pub vending machine now, one of my mates will always make sure he needs other stuff like shower gel and that if he needs to buy them in a shop, he figures how mental would you look to run up to the counter in Boots just to buy a pack of condoms, actually i must do that sometime, condoms and lube, leg it up to the counter breathless and just leave the change and reciept at the till and run out again, ripping the box open as you go lol

 That's just ridiculous! She's 25?? For god's sake, just pick them up at the supermarket and they'll be mixed in with 100 other items if it's really an issue for you, but it's not like the cashiers are going to care. Or order them online. How irresponsible of her.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭Herbal Deity

I don't understand why condoms are behind the counter in most small shops.

I always buy them in supermarkets, because not only are they cheaper, I don't have to go asking for them, which I imagine most people find a little embarassing. There's also the fact that you can't have a look at the different types available at your leisure.

Most supermarkets have self service checkouts.

I buy mine online, britishcondoms.co.uk is a great site for them, they do loads of sample packs too if you want to try different types, and its way cheaper than buying them in shops. I dont get the unprotected thing either, we always give out to her for it, it even got to the stage where the girls in the house were leaving some in her room before she went out as they'd know she'd wind up picking up some guy and bringing him home, shes never had an STD test either, ffs like how irresponsible can someone be, and now shes gotten a reputation of being that girl who'll sleep with anyone, she's probably a walking sti incubator at this stage

I have one better than that! When I was a teenager, I used to get rides to and from school with my best friend, Eric. He also gave two other girls rides to school. After school, we'd play light hearted pranks, mainly to amuse ourselves. So once, three of us - myself, Eric and one of the other girls - went into the drugstore to buy condoms. Eric was in the middle and myself and the other girl were on either side and he had his arms around our shoulders. We walked up to the counter like this and Eric points at the condoms and goes, "One pack, large - no," looks at me and winks, "Make it two."

The look on the cashier's face was priceless! :D

Never mind getting pregnant what about HIV?

Yes no one should be embarrassed about buying condoms but I can understand the thinking which says that as women usually have to pay for going to the dr and for thier contraception be it the pill, the patch the nuva ring or the coil or the implant or an ius that a guy should be the one paying for condoms.

    Buying condoms....advertisising yer getting laid.

Buyin porn/sex toys... yer advertising yer going to masturbate.

I dunno. I pay for my pill every month so it's only fair that the boy buys condoms.

couples use porn and sex toys too though, although thats another aspect of strange attitudes to sex, men who buy porn are seen as sad who need to jerk off, women who buy vibrators are empowered who dont need men apparently

Sometimes I think humans are stupid when it comes to contraception as a result of evolution.

Makes a lot of sense when you think about it.

also, to this day, she believes she was "unlucky" to have gotten pregnant.

    unlucky? nope

    stupid and irresponsible? yep!

i'd say something if she was a naive 14 year old, but she was in her late twenties and was well-educated and should have had more sense

Were they using condoms? In that case I would say unlucky, though I MUCH prefer when a girl is on the pill, I am too anxious a person!

Some supermarkets have anti-theft cases around certain products like condoms that require a staff member removing them at the check out which is not cool.

Boots do 2 packs of durex for 15 euro so I get them there along with boots points and student discount :D

slightly off topic, boots do a student discount??
    how much it is ?

and do they accept any valid student card or does it have to be one of those USIT ones?

incredible that people can be so stupid

Think it's called the just in Casey method!

The mind boggles at some of the attitudes to contraception that still exists. Loads of women use the Catholic church approved method but unless you really know how it works and stick to it, its far too risky.

I don't even have much of a sex life, nor do I sleep with someone out of the blue, yet I always make sure I have condoms in my bag. You just never know
Worse than the people that are too embarrassed to get them are the ones that refuse to use them. Because apparently 'feeling less' is more of a problem than ending up with an unwanted child/STD

I use my student travel card which has logos on the back for shops it can be used in. Don't know if they accept college ID or any other cards as I've never tried but I do think they swipe the card in the machine for the code thing.

You get 10% off which is handy but I feel stingy using it for little items and getting 20c off.

There's far more embarrassing things to buy in a shop than condoms!

it's happened to me more than bloody once that i've been caught short in a situation where we didnt have condoms, so i used to be quite good about makign sure i *always* had one on me, or around. id love if the guy did make sure he had the condoms, but in my experience, even if he doesnt, he'll still push his luck and go for the "ah go on, sure it'll be grand" chance. i wont, and so we both pretty much miss out on that one. so yes, preferably, he'll have them, but why take chances? :D

They are usually behind the counter because they are stolen quite a lot. Mostly because people are too embarrassed to go bringvthem up to the counter. Catch 22 really.

Pain in the hole isn't it! (Pardon the pun)

The material is just more expensive. It was the same with the nitrile gloves they got for me, in an old job.

Ha!!! I was with a guy who was too embarrassed to buy condoms. We had so many fights about it actually. Hit a nerve with him one night when I called him "immature" 'cause he is younger than me and was sensitive about the issue. He got out of my car and stormed across the Tesco car park. Then he came back....

Buying condoms is no biggie. I don't think it's up to either one in particular in a relationship, contraception should be something that is considered and taken care of by both sexes, imo.

Ha ha! Embarrassed? How immature must you be to be embarrassed buying condoms?

I'm never embarrassed. If anything I'd make it my business to let people know "YES THAT'S RIGHT. ONE PACK OF DUREX PLEASE. YEP, THESE ARE GETTING USE TONIGHT. I'M GETTING SOME. BAHA, YOU'RE NOT!"

    that'll learn him.

Don't most colleges/universities have student unions that do the whole...free condoms thing?

If you are in a college then pop in and find out...

If you aint in college.....then simply pop over anyway and pretend ha!

Don't know if they look for a student card, I aint been in to ask them for any. Worth a shot anyway!

Oh and ToniTuddle, Trojans have a wider base diameter so more comfortable for men with larger base of shaft.
