+1 on the Bettinsoli. Try Jim Griffin in Rahan, Tullamore. Good selection of both new and used shotguns.

Try a few different guns first. The price tag is the last thing you should look at. I know that is easy to say but there is no point in spending your hard earned cash on a gun that doesnt suit you. As soon as you find one that you are comfortanble with then look at getting one, be it new or second hand that is in your price range.
As JW said give John a bell he is sound to deal with and has a good set up at his place and if needs be he will adjust the stock to suit which will make a big difference to your score card, got my stock done for around €80.

lanber is a good gun , a little more expensive than a bettinsoli the bettinsoli is a good gun for the money and well detailed.
a friend bought a clean bettinsoli diamond for 450 euros from patrick carley in enniscorthy.

    Avoid bettinsoli,
my advice is to ask a good gun-smith about this crap shotti, or phone a dealer saying you've a 3 month old betty to trade, then you'll hear all about betty's, bad sear's, double firing, blue chipping, dealer's don't want them back once they leave their shop safe, and made there quick buck's.

As other have said here get a gun that fits. When I started out I found this book a great help http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/book/9781904057437/Breaking-Clays

Will tell you why a good fit is so important.

When you find a make and model that fits you then start looking for one that is in your price range.

    Hi Biffo,
If your shooting clays u need a reliable shotgun and that is hard to get with 600 euros even second hand.If you like shooting clays(Very Addictive) you will change your gun as you improve. I know ill get it in the neck from the ultra safety heads but you could consider a Beretta/Browning semiautomatic(Second Hand). If they are regularly cleaned they are very reliable. Some of the better clay shots in ireland shoot semiauto. Semi auto recoil less and are much easier to shoot with. However there are safety issues in relation to loading/unloading/Carrying around and trap shooting(All of which can be overcome). You could expect to pay 800 to 1000 for a decent one. You will change your gun later on and you will have a better trade with beretta or browning.Otherwise look at the under and over beretta 686 range or Browning 525. Will cost you something similar. Expect to pay at least 800.

you can get a good reliable shotgun for 700 or 800 euros.
i bought an as new lanber sporter for 670 euros a year ago.
you dont have to stretch to a beretta to get a good gun as many of the itilain or spanish shotguns are well built nowadays.
dan findy if your in donegal try ca andersons gun shop in omagh .
there is a guy called ivan that works in there he is a gentleman and they have a great choice of shotguns new and secondhand.
thats where i bought mine and found it to be the best place i tried.

I dont want to start manufacturer bashing but I own such a game shotgun and have had loads of problems with it the biggest of which was rusting and needing a total action overhaul after a few months(Under warranty and i did dry/clean and oil it). I know of two other that give problems also there fine for light game use and thats where it will remain. I wouldnt like to push 10k rounds through it in a year as would fall apart. I have seen Beretts 686's and Browning XS's giving up on the clay circuit this year but that was probably after a few years heavy use. All guns under heavy use give problems but youy pay for what u get.

    Kind Regards
    Sandyman.

    Hi Biffo,
I just thought of it but I started off Clay shooting with a Browning Medalist under/Over. This gun is manufactured by a company called fias under licence for browning I believe. This gun was very reliable, it was ancient when I got it and I did well with it on a trade as it was a well respected reliable clay busting shotgun. I have a feeling you may pick one up new for €800 but deffo under €1000. Nice looking gun also

    Kind Regards
