walk 30 secs up from the spar shop to the AIB Bank.
    get change.
    top up.
    buy pens.

and handling cash in the gallery and spar just brings us into the whole problem of security blah blah blah never gonna happen.

i think the WIT card is pretty handy.
the proposal is already after being put foward for all of the top up points to accept smaller coins, but theyre never going to have any cash option for the gallery or spar.

its all a matter of security.
if there was cash in a till, there has a to be a minimum of two people working on the tills to prevent theft by one employee. then theres the thought of someone just running in off the street and trying to rob the spar.
if theres a change machine anywhere the same thing happens. it would have to be emptied at the end of everyday just like a till, and all that money in one place just goes along with the risk of theft.
with the WIT card they dont have to worry about any of that. they only need one person at the counter to swipe a card, and they can open and close by themselves.

and if you know in the morning that you're going to need change for the WIT card, then why not just get change on your way into college in the morning?

    LOL.. oh god..

Tom O'Toole the head of the school of business (the "snobby lectures") eats in the canteen regulary.. loads of the lecture eat there & have meetings there..
The gallery being card only is good.. it keeps it for students, staff and guests only. no screaming school kids runnin around it..
WIT was one of the first colleges to bring in that type of card, and its envyed in alot of colleges, being able to have the key to my apartment, get a discount on food, get a discount in most clothes shops, access the lib (when they fix the doors) and not have to carry cash around, all on one card is pretty handy. Anyway there was talk that there goina program the machines to take 20c & 50c soon so that will be pretty handy..
Anyway.. anybody that wont walk to the aib/dome/canteen & ask for change... is just laaaazzzzyyyyy :P :)

Incorrect. There only needs to be one person on the tills. Theft is prevented by the use of cameras and staff searches at the end of the day.
if theres a change machine anywhere the same thing happens. it would have to be emptied at the end of everyday just like a till, and all that money in one place just goes along with the risk of theft.

But there's thousands of euros in the WIT Card machines with students topping up every second. Is that not more risky than having a change machine?

It has its few advantages like not having to carry cash but can be a major inconvenience sometimes. One of my lecturers refuses to use his card!:D I think that the whole issue of "discounts" on stuff is ridiculous, it's only an excuse to keep the prices higher for using cash! You wouldn't see that with any shops in town if you used your laser/credit card instead of cash! If people have to constantly get change from bank/dome/canteen, they are eventually going to refuse to give change because they will run out of it! I think that the card should only be used to identify you, borrow books from the library and access some restricted rooms.

who's going to carry out the staff searches? Who's the other person that will go back over the cameras everyday?
theyll have to hire a second person.
a second person they need for security and handling cash.

Its not that they'll be stealing from the tills, its that they will count the money wrong at the end of the day or pocket even the smallest bit of change without the camera seeing.

Campus Services have already said there has to be two people behind the counter. It was discussed in the first class rep council this past semester i believe.

They've almost got it right with the WIT card. The most compelling argument for the WIT card is convenience. However, it's also this area that it often falls down in. Instead of eliminating queues, it only serves to move them as anyone who has to navigate through the wall of people in the business building between 12 and 1.

Progress has been made with the introduction of mobile top-ups and the heavy promotion of the other methods of topping up (i.e. ATM and Internet) but it will take a few years for any affect to be seen as old habits die hard and most current students will carry on using the same method to top up as long as they're in the college.

WIT really is miles ahead of every other college when it comes to the features and diversity of its student ID card. The eventual goal is for One Card Solutions to roll out their cards to institutions around the country and offer a "universal" card that can be used in all participating colleges (i.e. I could use my WIT Card to buy things in UCC for example).

I think it would be naive to take this claim for granted. All the tills in the college are automated and all staff have their own ID so that transactions can be attributed to them. Reports can be run on the spot and any discrepancies in the figures investigated immediately.

lol "some people" ... look, in fairness you are the one complaining about a very good service wit provides just because you didnt have 60c change, seriously, its lazyness on your behalf because instead of tryin to go and get change, ask somebody / go somewhere you didnt, instead you decided to rant about it on this.. them places arent over loaded with student looking for change because most students are more prepared.
You then decided to talk about the "snobby lectures" which you are completly wrong about, whats next??
So anyway.. why didnt you run over to SU, they have a little stationary shop there and they take cash !!

theres a few class reps on here, and this is a pretty good idea tbh, should be bought up at their meetings, but college is on a tight budget just like yourself and these ideas mean getting new (potentially expensive) machines.

tbh i dont have a high opinion on our current student union leaders and same with alot of the reps, when they had the training in new ross i heard it ended up in a big piss up etc, very very productive...lol, and these are the people you should really be talking to and are meant to be solving our problems (i personally have bought up issues to some reps im not a rep but i told them about the parking lights near the gym didnt work etc, they still arent fixed AFAIK, and same with near the gallery now they are broken as well) so i mean i understand where your comming from but this is WIT, last year we had to pay for our own paper so we can make new drawings etc for our course work, the photo copying/printing is way to expensive (its free in alot of colleges) :/ your lucky its your last year some of us have to deal with it for another while.
