does anyone think that new methods and cost of renewing the licence for guns is an active measure by the powers that be to get gun owners to surrender their guns.
was chatting to a friend of mine about it and we are of the opinion that this might be the case.
he was telling me of a friend of his who went to the firearms officer in his area to apply for a second licence in the balbriggan area and was told that he wouldnt be granted one as they are trying to reduce the number of guns in the area. not sure how true this is. . .
i have a shotgun and am hoping to maybe get a rifle in the new year. . .
wondering if im going to experience the same thing. . .
has anyone else come accross this, or think this is the case with the new licenceing methods. . .??

Yes to the methods but no to the cost. The cost of a shotgun is €5 dearer over a 3 year period. Hardly going to break the bank. The cost of a rifle is €24 cheaper over 3 years. I think the cost is perfectly reasonable.

As to the methods, of course its going to tempt people to surrender. The older generation (but not limited to them) with no computer skills, no membership to clubs, basically no access or full understanding of the new system are going to weigh the pros and cons of keeping a firearm and make a decision. The cost only comes into it when people mistakeningly think its €80 per year.

As bunnyshooter said check the NARGC site. There is also a thread either on it or about it on here. Check it out and follow the advice given.

Apply away. No-one knows for sure if you'll get it or not (other than your super) but you have the right to apply. Let no-one tell you otherwise.

thanx for the link dude, didnt realise there was such polava going on over it.

as reguards the cost of the licence, i understand that its over the three years, but i beleive that having to pay a lomp some will encourage multi gun owners to surrender some of their fire arms as they will be looking at paying upwards of two to three hundred euros. . .

is it true that they are trying to introduce five bolt gun safes as standard along with mlti beam and alarm contact systems as standard. . .?

this new licensing system will affect farmers with restricted licences badly.
the cost for them has gone from 6 euros per year to 80 euros for 3 years so a lot of them wont renew and will just hand back their shotguns.
the new licence is just a flimsy bit of laminated paper with a hologram in the corner.
it dosnt even have a photo of the licence holder just seems like a method of gathering money fast.

There are hardly that many farmes with restricted firearms are there?

Thats already happening but they can apply for a limited cert. Its €40. Still twice the price of the €6 per annum but less than the €80 full license fee.

......... just seems like a method of gathering money fast.

More like a rushed solution to a rushed problem. If the cards, license, procedures, etc were started to be introduced a year ago and everything was in place for the change over in July then we might have pictures on the cards, and it may be that way in 3 years time. Just have to wait and see.
