For myself, being in NI, there is no advantage for me to get this T2 system as it will not be available in my area til 2012, so I just sit out and see what will happen by then, maybe more manufacture will have their version of T2 and the prices will be a lot cheaper and also the technology will also be better, as new system will always have bugs in it to iron out, TESTING and more testing is the way to iron out bugs and problems.
Maybe someone in the Wales DTT coverage area along the east coast may want to get it... but for me, I just wait and see.

This should be enough to get the free to air terresterial stuff?
    • Integrated freesat tuner – watch free-to-air HD and SD satellite broadcasts without the need for an additional set top box
    • Watch digital TV with the integrated standard definition digital terrestrial tuner (MPEG-2, also receives analogue)
    • Watch cable TV with the integrated digital cable tuner (subject to country and with supported operators only

I was thinking of going to Maplins, to buy something discreet, has anyone bought something they would recommend from them?

Well guys, I finally made it to Maplins.
I bought this aerial, and haven't had much luck with it.
I'm in Castleknock. The analog tuner gets audio tuner gets 6 services, but only one with a b&w image, see attached. The digital tuner gets no services.

Should I just give up, and stick with the freesat?
Or should I contact a specialist?

Are the RTE stations being transmitted on mpeg2 or mpeg4?

    Would this solve the problem?

Before you rush off and buy a transcoder cam, you should be picking up Digital services. Those pics are bad bad analogue. Go to the digital tuner and scan.

Connect your 36db indoor aerial to your TV and position the aerial itself near the window (preferably on the cill) and turn the gain on full whack.

You should pick up DTT on channel 54 (738MHZ) on the digital tuner. If their is sound and no picture then you have an MPEG2 tuner. You should at least be getting that and EPG data.

DTT is MPEG4 (many of the Sonys are).

What model Sony do you have ?

Thanks for your post, it is informative.
The telly is a Sony Bravia KDL46W5810.

I tried the digital tuner, and by pure luck it picked up RTE etc, but the screen was black with no sound. The EPG was saying it had no event information.

We tried heaps of different antenna positions, and haven't been able to get *anything* back.

The antenna has two telescopic rabbits ears, no idea how to use them, and then a hoop antenna that can be rotated *and* tilted. Which one is used for digital?

I also tried manual tuning, it came up with channel 54 by default, and asked for a tuning direction, it doesn't seem to find anything, just keeps looping.

I noticed on the menu there is "LNA" no idea what that is, but the wife pointed out that it was Off to begin with, and when it found the RTE placeholders, it changed to On. What is it for?

*UPDATE* A bit more luck, I went to the Technical section in the menu, and could see the signal strength meter, and when I held the antenna up to the window, I got a picture!!! RTE1!,
but I have to hold the antenna up, if I take my hand off of it, I either get bad bad video, or a blank screen. What would you advise I do next? but a big antenna and have a guy install it on the roof, or try something else?....

    THANKS!!!!!!

    @Tsquare:
That TV is MPEG4, so you should get DTT.

What country is it set to? If you set it to Ireland, the satellite bit will give FTA and not Freesat.

That aerial is not suitable, I would think. Get a lead for connecting the TV aerial with connector on the end. Have the other end bare, and stip about 2 inches of copper at the end. To this add a length of wire as follows. Cut about 16 inces of straightened coathager wire, preferable not a plastic one (:D) or a painted one. Bent the wire to follow the outside form of a T shape, so it forms a loop that would be 7 inches across the top of the T and about one inch away from the T.

    ...........] [

This diagram is not coming out right. Ignore the full stops.
Connect the wire ends to the bottom of the T. Tape it up with sellotape or electicians tape making sure that it does not short out.

Lay this on the floor pointing toward 3Rock, and rescan. Try it, it should work.

Maplin and their crap indoor aerials. Bring it back and tell em it doesnt work (the items below will be available there but will be more expensive than on ebay).

I have tried loads of em... and this combination works best for indoor.

    Indoor
Get a simple non powered indoor UHF aerial. I used a "One for All SV9021" this can sit on the window cill. Cost 13 euro on ebay.

Then buy a small booster. I used a "Philex SLX1 Aerial amplifier" Costs 10-15 euro on ebay.

    slx1_aerial_amp.jpg

Then you need 2 lengths of coax cable extenders male to female sockets. Typically the small indoor aerial only has a small lead on it so you need to extend it to get it near the window. The other extender cable goes from your TV to the TV out on your amplifier. OR You could also buy a TV extension kit in power city for about a tenner and make up the cables.

So the aerial cable goes into the Philex and then the Philex is connected to the Tv via the other cable (the philex pic above shows you). The philex has a variable gain on it - turn t full whack - it only does 14db but is quite effective)

    Outdoor
Alternatively buy an outdoor UHF aerial and mount it outside or in your loft and run the coax to your TV!

to get that on the roof, would it be expensive?

If you dont fancy getting up on your roof (most people dont) remember ir doesnt have to be on a roof. Stick it in your back garden off a wall bracket or on top of a pole (like a clothes line pole for example).
