Yes they can. They can either qualify through the world series where they must finish in top 4 and if not from there they can qualify as europes representative. there is then a final qualifier which is a global repechage tournament with teams from each area in country.

we are 10 points behind South Africa who are 5th right now. 3 tournaments left to overhaul that. France are currently 4th but already qualified as host.

Women are currently in the final spot to qualify for the Olympics with Fiji and GB 2 and 4 points behind with 1 tournament to go

Top 4 qualify (down to 5th if France is top 4).

The women should be aiming for this. If the last two events had been 5ths or 6ths instead of 8th we would almost be locked in for top 5 (with France top 4). Instead we have a 2 point lead over Fiji and a 4 point lead over GB going into the last event. Both Fiji and GB are in good form (having finished 3rd and 4th last time out).

There are 3 rounds left in the mens series. We are currently 8th on 91 points. I don't think we will catch South Africa who are 5th (on 101 points) while also overtaking Australia and Samoa.

After that theres a European qualifier (which has one qualifying team and one slot in an international repechange for the last slot).

Assuming we don't qualify from the world series it will be between us and GB for the European slot in the mens.

In the womens should we not qualify we should hope for GB to do well in the last world series event as it will make the European qualifier automatic if they and France aren't taking part.

3 losses this weekend against Argentina, GB and now Japan.

Really poor set of results by Ireland. First ever loss to Japan thrown in. They are really struggling without Terry Kennedy. He won us so many close games last year.

This was the squad for last years world cup

    Jack Kelly

    Andrew Smith

    Harry McNulty

    Bryan Mollen

    Chay Mullins

    Billy Dardis

    Jordan Conroy

    Hugo Lennox

    Mark Roche

    Terry Kennedy

    Sean Cribbin

    Matt McDonald

This is the squad for the current world series event.

    Jordan Conroy (Buccaneers RFC)

    Sean Cribbin (Suttonians RFC)

    Fergus Jemphrey (Ballynahinch RFC)

    Niall Comerford (UCD RFC/Leinster)

    Hugo Lennox (Skerries RFC)

    Matt McDonald (IQ Rugby)

    Liam McNamara (IQ Rugby)

    Harry McNulty (UCD RFC) (capt)

Chay Mullins (Galway Corinthians RFC/Connacht/IQ Rugby)

    Dylan O’Grady (UCD RFC)

    Mark Roche (Lansdowne FC)

    Tom Roche (Lansdowne FC)

    Andrew Smith (Clontarf FC/Leinster)

The players in both squad are Andrew Smith, Mark Roche, Chay Mullins, Harry McNulty, Hugo Lennox and Jordan Conroy. That's 6 out of 12 retained.

I'm not sure how much of the changes are because someone is injured or someone has been dropped or because players aren't available for selection. It has been a lot of change imo.

Chay Mullins will be going into year 2 in the Connacht academy next season and might want to focus on 15s and Andrew Smith was also signed by Connacht for next season. That might be 2 of the world cup squad leaving sevens.

We added losses to South Africa and USA to finish 15-16.

This could well be our worst result since we pulled together a contracted sevens squad.

Have Samoa, Australia and Japan in our group for Toulouse tournament.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,744 ✭✭✭SaoPaulo41

It's really poor ,I wonder was it humidity or illness in camp, I'm clutching at straws here

european tournaments for men, women and 18s confirmed

men and women play 2 rounds of european competition. In Algarve June 9-11 and Hamburg July 7-9

European games is in Krakow June 24-26 and both men and women if they win tournament get an olympic spot

u18s boys and girls play on July 15/16

Let's hope the women have a good weekend in Toulouse and wrap up qualification before the European games. Or if they don't let's hope it's GB who take the last spot so it should only be us Vs Spain really for the European games spot as nobody wants to go to the repêchage for the last spot. It's a pretty brutal high pressure qualification format outside the World Series.

Womens squad for next weeks finale in Toulouse

2 points ahead of Fiji and 4 ahead of GB for the final direct qualification spot for Olympics

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,354 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

A very comprehensive victory against France in the group opener for the Women's team which is a pleasant surprise. 27-7 in the end but the margin probably should have been wider which says a lot.

.....and then the men's beat Samoa 14-12 with the last play of the game.

Great game. Ball in play for a huge amount of time.

Did the team look good or was it just a Amee Murphy Crowe show.

There was a lot of talk we were reliant too much on her after she missed an event through injury.

Fiji and GB are both 2 wins from 2 so far in pool stage for women and play each other in final pool game result will impact us potentially for olympic spot.

She got things rolling with a moment of individual skill leading to the opening try but from then on in it was a full team effort.

Both Men's and Women's squads were defeated by Australia, big day tomorrow.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,165 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

We are likely to play the winner of that game in a QF

Correction we are likely to play the lower of that game in a qf. Great Britain was the loser.

Disappointing as Great Britain and ourselves would be vying for qualification through Europe if we don't qualify through the sevens series so I would have preferred to avoid them here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,165 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Sorry, I read the groups wrong! Yes, if we’re second we’ll face GB

Fiji likely to play USA. That game is first so if the USA win, the Ireland v GB game is effectively an Olympic qualifier

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,354 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

France come back to beat Australia and we concede a try to Brazil at the end results in us now being paired with Australia again in the next round.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,165 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

    Disastrous turn of events

    Aus v Ireland

    Fiji v USA

    GB v France

hopefully the USA & France do us a favour

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,354 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

66-0 victory over Japan for the mens but more than likely facing New Zealand in the next round.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 14,599 Mod ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

Ireland lose to Australia and USA beat Fiji. This leaves Great Britain able to claim qualification if they beat France.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,165 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

    France win.

So tomorrow there’s an Olympic qualification mini tournament now

    Ireland v Fiji

GB v Japan (who are useless)

Winners play each other for spot at the Olympics

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 14,599 Mod ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

An Irish win is against Fiji is actually sufficient to qualify (Ireland are 2 ahead of Fiji and 4 ahead of GB). 5th is 12 points and 6th is 10.

I'm not sure who finishes ahead if multiple teams finish on the same amount of points (for example if we finish 5th GB 6th Fiji and 7th Ireland) and all finish on 72 points.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,354 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Heard a commentator say it would come down to points difference, assuming it's over the course of the entire series.
