New computers in the Boole basement?

Well i was down there this morning and the big lab on the left was closed and two lads inside there were stacking the computers and screens over in the corner. I was sitting close to the helpdesk and over heard one of them talking to someone who they were helping and she either said they were getting new computers or else upgrading the os's.

Hopefully it is new computers as it would be awesome and god knows this is long overdue :) Can anyone shed any light on whether they are getting new comps?

Only the lower parts did. The libary/boole basement and the buildings up on those levels were pretty much ok.

Or they could use Windows 7. Xp though? Seriously? What a joke. Even Vista is far more stable than Xp at this stage.

UCC splash out on new computers, and you complain about what type of Windows they're using?!

It's not bloody NASA, it does'nt make any difference what type of a bloody computer it is as long as it works.

What a dumb statement. The type of computer indicates how well it works. Obviously you want the best OS.

Incidentally, anywhere in UCC that runs Linux? I've emulated it on a few PCs, but its just not the same.

It's the geek in me acting up. It's just a pointless act as Xp will be irrelevant by the end of next year at the latest. I don't use the computers in college very often anyway as you know, Sir Rory Haughey.

With 4 gbs of Ram Vista would be fast as hell on the computers and Windows 7 even more so since it takes up basically half the amount of memory processes that Vista does. It's just a silly thing to do, imo.

I wouldnt be surpised if it was 7 as UCC are part of that microsoft initiative thing which means they can get the OS's quite discounted.

Also just to throw it in
ye all know that ye can get windows 7 direct from microsoft for 29 dollars using yer student email address yeah?

Far as I know all the lab machines in WGB dual boot xp and some form of linux.. need to have a compsci or mathsci logon though.

It does seem pretty pointless putting xp onto these new machines but Im sure they have their reasons. They must have been ordered a good long time ago to be coming with vista but even so they should all be elegible for free windows 7 upgrades..
Im thinking they are sticking with xp so they won't have any server side problems. Id imagine it's also much easier from a tech support point of view to have every machine using the same OS, chances are if they wanted to upgrade to windows7 they'd want to do all machines on campus at the same time rather than having clusters with win7 and clusters with xp.

Pity though, windows 7 would be very nice and even potentially faster than xp.

On a side note, anyone know if there's any plans to upgrade the machines in the CAD lab of the elec building?

Havent been down in the boole since last year.

Is it true its damn near impossoible to get a computer now, as the ORB lab is closed?

Yes, pretty much. I used to go down to the Boole for half an hour every afternoon, and have no problem, but now I've to head in at around 6pm if I want to get a computer without queing.

I should be ok for whenever it is i eventually go back to college, laptops are great. :D

Dunno how i will go about bringing it in though.. Dont want to carry two seperate bags, but don't want it to get damaged in by my books either :(

Seems to me though, that they probably could have held off on the upgraded computers, and kept the lab in the ORB open an extra year.

Does anyone know if the old computers are being sold off? They did this a few years ago during the summer when the BIS lab was being redone.

Basement of the Kane building was my favourite spot, though I had a key card. If you knock though someone will let you in, nice and quiet too

They're gone. Staff were allowed take whatever they wanted and a free for all ensued last Friday.

I got one. Nothin special but will throw in some parts and run it as a server in my apartment. We have one running already - another one of the bb machines we got. Plugged in an O2 stick and a router into it and we got cheap and cheerful wifi throughout the apartment

Surely using o2 broadband as shared broadband is totally crazy?!

It's good to see the new machines being put it,But the thing that annoys me is the actual log in time,Requesting your data from the server etc..Even in the CS labs it can be painfully slow.

The Machines up in the Microelectronics Department run Red Hat, and the last time I was in the Lab in the basement of the Kane buildling they were dual booting XP and openSUSE (it's a while back now though).

Honestly though in the boole, they'd be far better off they went with a tried, tested and stable Linux distro (Debian Stable perhaps?), it'd cut back on a lot of costs eg. Office 2007 on PC's that are primarily used for the internet and the internet alone.

That's been on the cards for a while now but on account of them wanting to pay no one, it ain't going to happen for a good bit of time yet.

They're holding off on going with 7 until they're 100% happy that it won't cause problems, i.e. till they finish testing it.

Any machine in WGB but you'll need a CS or Maths login

Its fine once you monitor the usage. 10gb is a lot when the speed makes it unfeasable to download stuff in mass quantities. We won't hit the limit in the month.

With regard to the logins, in the CS labs you can speed up your login to 20-30sec by deleting some select files that are not being used but are loaded on login time thus slowing it all down. PM me if you instructions on how to do so

As x43r0, WGB. Not so sure about all computers there, but certainly the CS ones do (with stupid KDE though :pac:).

Would you be interested in starting a Linux user group of sorts in the Uni? What about you x43r0? Myself and a classmate mentioned it in passing before a tutorial, and Ive wormed another guy in the class into install Ubuntu. One of the "head" guys in the Irish Linux User Group is doing a PhD in UCC.

I figured that's what they were going for. I'd say by the start of the next academic year in September Windows 7 will be up and running. Most of the major bugs in the OS would be ironed out by that stage anyway.

It woudl be crazy for UCC to move to 7 outright before SP1 is on the cards at least. I've been part of Beta, RC and had RTM running for a couple weeks before release and there are problems with this OS. Most peopel that use the open access labs will only notice a cool new task bar. Network limitations still apply.

I know UCC are investigating 7 along with a wealth of new comp stuff like webmail, but open access labs are not the place to test this stuff out, Your going to get no tech feed back from users.

Actually, seeing as how we're on the topic of all this IT stuff, how come the cit student mail is run by google, and we have that crappy student mail system. Is it really that expensive to run.

I remember one of the guys that was running for SU president wanted to have the email system switched over to Gmail. The only thing i can think of is that its easier for the college to have its own system and that they can jink with when they want to change stuff. And how would you control what people put as their email addresses etc?.

Google was looked at, I hear a new webmail is on the cards.

    Think outlook 07 esk...

When you see a large organisation/educational institution using gmail as they're mail system, its not the gmail you might think. You can buy the gmail software to use within a company/university. By doing so you control what the addresses look like.

eg you could buy it and have the email me@mybiglad.com

UCC Societies Guild uses gmail software for society email accounts

I'm pretty sure it happened already. I got word of a free for all yesterday.

To be honest, your probably not gonna get one unless you're staff or a friend of staff as this stuff isn't publicly announced

Was actually going to post about this. The ones on Q+3 were being updated as I was leaving. You know the ones that were small? Just as you're entering the glass area. They're being updated, looking good.
