Anyone go to Top Gear live yesterday?I'm hearing poor reports that it was worse than last year.I notice they are pushing Sunday very hard, seems to have poor sales.
They even have a big ad in the Times today"Extra tickest released"
They fooled alot of people last year and you know the old saying.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

Might head on Sunday if there's any half-decent reports. What are the cheapest tickets available?

I was there last night. Very disappointing. The whole thing felt a bit tired as if they were just going through the motions. The Irish guy who came in half way through Clarkeson's speech in the audience was hilarious. He was completely locked and refused to sit down.

Heard that they've cancelled a couple of shows in Dublin and that audiences in the UK have been very poor.

I get the impression that anyone who is more than half interested in cars wouldn't be seen watching Top Gear.

im going tomorrow.. will throw in my thought after..

I don't see the point. The whole TG thing has strayed too far into popular entertainment and away from those with a genuine interest in cars. The fact that any TG discussion on Boards is booted into the TV section by the mods (and that the regulars on there are not the regulars from the Motors forum) speaks volumes for me.

Also, on the rare occasion when an audience member is featured they are invariably ill-informed 'geezers'

I think the average TG viewer is a juvenile idiot.

(Still watch it though :D - enjoyed the Lancia feature last week)

That was the exception that proved the rule. The bit with the disintegrating Beta would have been quite funny for an eight year old.

The impression i'm getting here is that if i don't have a ticket, don't waste my money on it.Mabey get a good car DVD or something i can enjoy instead.

Why are you watching it if you hate it so much? You can go watch 5th gear (snore) if you want, but I like watching nice cars drive/race/crash across africa/US/Arctic/Romania, and I suspect a lot of other people do too.

So the guys go over the top with the silly set-piece jokes. It's cringy, but get over it!

I went last year, it was a very good show, price of the tickets was the biggest issue. Was going to go again this year, but €100 per ticket this year, is akin to €250 this time last year, they have priced themselves out of the market.

I watched the feature on Lancias, that's it. You're right though, lots of people do watch it. It's a car show for Sun readers, and there's no shortage of them.

I actually won 2 free tickets for yesterday's show from memoryc.com, but turned them down. In part because I'd heard from others that it was a waste of time, and secondly because it was at pretty short notice. Still, they said they'd call the next person on their list, so they hopefully didn't go to waste.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭Omega28

im starting to think I shouldn't pay mad money to see this as it seems a very poor show

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,396 ✭✭✭Tefral

Went last year and was really disappointed, i won two gold tickets so im going tonight ill let ye know how it compares, i defo wouldnt be going if i had to pay

Top Gear inc it should be called its turned into one big cynical money making machine > the magazine, books, dvds, toys and now the show.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,714 ✭✭✭no1beemerfan

Went last year and paid extra to see the cars used in the show afterwards. Well I thought I'd get to see the cars. Brutal. It was on the boring side and a big waste of money. And time.

Went last year, good craic but once was enough. I didnt see poeple going crazy buying merchandise either......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,812 ✭✭✭mailforkev

They blew it with me last year big time, didn't even consider going this year.

Spent over 200 sheets on 2 of the fancy tickets last year only to be very disappointed by the show and even more miffed by how we were herded through the "paddock tour" backstage area after.

    Went last night.

Enjoyed the show, but it was very expensive for what it was.

Happy I went, but can't say I'd go again next year unless the tickets were half the price.

Nice bit of stereotyping there, suprising coming from a mod.

Two years ago Top Gear was the best hour of a Sunday evening. Today, not so much. Its still mildly entertaining, yes the format is tired, yes most of it is staged...but at the end of the day you do get to see some nice cars and you might get a laugh of two out of it. What else are you going to watch? Fifth Gear? Reality tripe? Its an hour of car antics with no ads, for me its a no-brainer.

Ps, I have no affiliation with The Sun, in fact, I can't stand tabloids.

As for the show...I went last year. Top Gear doesnt transpose well onto a stage show, in fact it doesnt work at all. Its a novelty to see the lads in the flesh, and the special effects/stage show was pretty good. But would I go again, Im afraid not.

I was in their office the other day. I meant to ask them if they had any spare tickets :D

I wasn't second on their list then :(

So....if we stereotype we receive an infraction and/or a ban, but if you do it it's all fair and ok to do?

Ah come on now! Who has ever been infracted or banned for stereotyping? Do you honestly think my comment was worthy of either? The rules are in the charter and they're the same for all of us, myself included.

No, just saying, like if I was to call (taken into context) a black man the n word, I'd be stereotyping, and if I did it here I'd get banned for it....

So why should you be able to stereotype?

Calling a black man the n word is not stereotyping.
    It's being a racist muppet.

Calling some one the n word is called being racist. Come on now, us mods are infallible, never ever wrong in any way ever. Banned for eternity because i feel like it...;)

That would be racism and any of us would get banned for it. The same goes for homophobia or sexism. Stereotyping is saying, for example, that BMW/SUV/Mercedes drivers are arrogant or that Civic drivers wear baseball caps - ie pretty much what you'll find in any number of threads here. It's a completely different thing.

Well then just ignore the first comment, but I'm sure I'd get an infraction for the second as I've seen it done with a fair few stereotypes and in different sub-forums.

I'd say you'd be more likely to get blank looks around here.;) Seriously though, the line is when it crosses into personal abuse. Put simply, we can say that's stupid but we can't say you're stupid.

You referred to a specific group of people though, so surely you're being stereotypical no?

Quote for reference 'It's a car show for Sun readers, and there's no shortage of them.'

Of course I was stereotyping, but that's not against the rules. Otherwise how could we have threads like 'do certain types of people drive certain cars?' without banning everyone who posts?

Can we stick with Top Gear live please.Still haven't decided whwther to go on Sunday or not.
The impression i have sofar is don't go,it's to dear and not a great show.
I'd say there will be plenty of free tickets given out for Sunday if it is not cancelled.
Where would you get some of those free tickets?I would go for free

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,445 ✭✭✭Absurdum

I looked up the ticket prices...for that kinda money I'd be expecting a 20 minute shot in an Enzo.

who would be giving out free tickets? i would hope that they would slash the price for sundays show but its not going to happen. i would never pay that kind of money to see the show. tbh, i just want to see some of the cars, i wouldnt even bother with the show.

I Went last year with 3 friends, we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, good craic, great stunt driving, pyrotechnics & banter amongst the 3 top gear lads, we all felt we got a good show, wasn't cheap, but most half decent entertainment in this banana republic is expensive, the car show outside the live event was great too, it was pricy last year, but charging the same amount this year is just crazy. I have to say I find all of the bandwagon jumpers knocking top gear yet still watching it quite amusing.

Oh by the way neither I nor any of my mates are sun readers, and although we watch top gear we are also car enthusiats too, but we must be the exception to the rule.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭Mickk

Haha there is a load of top gear tickets on gumtree at below cost, looks like the touts got burnt on this one.

I went last year. It was a laugh - the car show was my favourite bit. (To the guy going with his son, you'll both really enjoy it.) It's way too expensive though, so no chance of me going again this year.

I'm watching older episodes of top gear at the moment (look to be about 2004ish) on Dave. It was so much better then. They never left the country and drove cars that you actually see on the roads. Nowadays it's just a blokey sex and the city.

Clarkson's book 'On cars' is a good read though - mostly his articles from the 80s and early 90s when he was broke and his writing was fresher.

Right as promised. I went last year and was really disappointed, was so contrived and also everything was rushed, over crowded etc. Swore id never go back..

So i got free gold tickets this year and the paddock tour etc so i said sure F**k it ill go.

Have to say it was less rushed this year, jeremy at least had his voice back. Overall it was a better show but i would have been horrified to pay €100 for the tickets each. Less cars in the marquee section and i also didnt appreciate being called a british driver by Jimmy Carr... the loop the lopp was cool and the stunt drivers were savage.

Same oul crap with the cool wall and the race though.

My oneliner verdict: Better than last year but not worth the money

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 556 ✭✭✭Bobo78

I just came back from Dublin from Top Gear and I have to say that I liked it it was very good and in some way it was better then last year. Reson being is that this year there wasnt lot of stunts but there was more of talking about cars and it was more like being in the Top Gear in London.
So overall I liked it and would go again if they come back. It was a good laugh.

would u get cheap tickets outside the RDS?
