Tbh, the "biggest regrets" and "highs/lows" threads kinda got me down a little... So I thought I'd make a thread for the posi end of the spectrum (being that, I'm in a pretty good mood right now!) so here's some cool shít I learned this year:

There's an awful lot within grabbing distance if you just reach out.
Happiness really is more important than anything else.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained!
I'm a really nice person and I'd never really realised before...
Some people really aren't worth it!
Smiling at strangers elicits a smile in return and smiles from strangers are ace.
Making a drunken ass of yourself isn't actually embarrassing if you can laugh at yourself.
Making new friends is really easy when you open yourself up to it. It's also one of the best things in the world.

How about you?!

That's some deep thinking right there.
I completely agree with all the above comments. Some people are not worth the hassle at all and the sooner you realize that the better.
I love when you walk down the street and some elderly person gives you a big ol' smile:D It really brightens up my day...and I like to pass it forward!

Making friends is really the best part of my life. It's opened my eyes to many different cultures and I'm loving it:D

I feel I've matured immensely and I believe I'm a better person for it.

Getting rid of all the negative influences in my life made no difference so there's something else, unknown so far, I'm going to have to do.

I've learned that family don't mean to be a pain in the ass,they usually just have your best interests at heart,so might just nag you to get you doing something positive.

Brown bread is really nice, the grainier the better. I know it sounds trivial compared to the stuff people will be talking about in this thread but damn! It's ****ing class. So many wasted, white breaded years...

I've learned that there's no point worrying about things I can't control. I learned the logical part of that lesson a good few years back, but my emotional side only caught up this year! Big difference in knowing and believing :rolleyes:

I've also learned that letting people know (in a a calm manner) I'm annoyed at something they've done is a damn sight easier than not saying anything and re-living the alleged 'wrong-doing' over and over in my head!!

Finally, I learned that you should remove the bolt screws at the back of a new washing machine after it's been delivered. Otherwise the machine will rattle a LOT when you do a wash, and your neighbours will come in and complain.
Corollary- I've also learned to lay patio slabs on top of big mounds of earth

Ive learned there is no point in expecting the worst because all too often worse than what you are capable of imagining actually happens and you end up shocked and dismayed anyway.

So what I have learned is there is no limit to people's monstrosity.

i've learned...

fighting fire with fire doesn't work.
fighting fire with water doesn't work.
fighting fire with sand just ends up with sandy irritable private parts.

my conclusion... quit doing anything :D.

Recently I've learned that life is really, really fúcking short.

It's both a painful and enlightening perspective, but is sort of changing things for me.

Don't let fear stand in the way of a new experience/accomplishment, you're the only one that can stop you! (I know, sounds like cliched psycho-babble but it's true!)

It takes going away from home to actually appreciate that Ireland isn't as bad as we imagine!

Don't rule out ANYTHING as an impossibility, there are ways around almost anything.

Don't project how you feel or act about something onto someone else and how they act and feel. Very easy thing to fall into.

Do what you are afraid to do. It may go tits up, but even if it does the lesson is always worth it. If you learn it.

While some patterns exist in people, never assume. Sometimes you have to go with your "gut".

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

what you got to do is electrocute yourself like mel gibson did in that movie, that's the only way you'll know what they truely want.

Ok i know this is off topic, sorry:o, but I had to answer it. Kingtut women dont all think the same and have all the same motives, emotions, fears and hopes as men. Using an intenet forum to figure anyone out isn't going to work, you need to talk with her.

Do you really want to go through your life thinking what if?

Some people aren't worth the effort
Don't listen to rumours, they'l just get you down
Challenge yourself, you may just be surprised

Found this quote over in the spirituality forum sometime during the year, pretty much sums up how I feel about life in general. I'm not religious at all but really has stuck with me;

"When you breath - breath deeply, and say Thank You. When you dance - dance with abandon, and say Thank You. When you love - don't try to protect yourself from heartbreak, and say Thank You. When you are in the sun - close your eyes and feel it on your face....and say, Thank You!"

A few things i've learned this summer...:P

Life is'nt about finding yourelf its creating yourself.

80% of success is just turning up.

Its not what your know in this world, its who you know.

There will always be that one person, who doesnt give you a chance or fails to realise all the work and effort you have put in. Thats their problem not mine.

Never ever expect circumstances, places, people to make you happy. Only you can make things good for your self. Things are definitally what YOU make them.

Smile often, and mean it.

I have learnt that worrying about things that might never happen is pointless and debilitating!

I have also learnt that sometimes things are right for you even when other people think they might not be.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,285 ✭✭✭DancingDaisy

I've learned that there is no point in trying to bury any part of who you are, because you think those closest to you won't like it. If they are as close to you as you think they are then chances are they already know, and still love you anyway :-)

• Closed Accounts Posts: 17,485 ✭✭✭✭Ickle Magoo

Be grateful for things like our health and close family....

And to stop looking at what other people are doing & what they have, as long as we're happy, who cares what other people have! :)

Don't be afraid to try new things.

Keep an open mind.

Stay true to yourself and remember who you are and what you stand for, don't let anyone else dictate your feelings on yourself.

Having a few good, solid friendships is much, much more important and satisfying than being "popular" and having flakey relationships.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,650 ✭✭✭✭minidazzler

No matter what or who it is, if you want it, do it. Regrets only come when you don't do something.

You are goodlooking, you are attractive, and you are a damn mind reader....there is noone out of your league.

Drink up baby, stay up all night, the things you could do, you won't....but you might. :D

• Closed Accounts Posts: 5,488 ✭✭✭pikachucheeks

there is noone out of your league.

I don't believe in the idea of leagues - it's cruel and often, incredibly shallow.

No person is any better, or any worse than another. We're all just different.

It's not exactly a question of faith, but TBH, alot of people just don't have the mentality to pick up someone who would be classed as hotter than them. I am goodlooking, but it's my personality that win's people over!! :D

(In a cocky mood today, I am so happy about nothing! :D)

Things I learned this year:

Compromise, even on the big things, is important in a marriage.
Getting punched in the face doesn't hurt nearly as much as you'd think.
The difference between winning and losing is tiny.
I'm gonna have to put up with my mums idiosyncracies.
2 year olds don't respond well to logic.
It is surprisingly easy to fall into tieing your sense of self to the shape of your body, but you shouldln't.
The safety of your family is an incredibly powerful motivator. There's a little story behind this one that makes me smile. :)

Sure. I didn't initially because I feel like I'm always banging on about fighting - omg, shut up about the fighting Khannie - it takes up a huge percentage of my time, but I'm conscious that most people are like "yeah, that's nice". :)

Anyway, about 10 minutes before my last fight two weeks ago, and the nerves were high. I'd fought the guy before and it was a very tough, very close fight so I knew it was going to be a very tough fight again. The guy was slightly smaller than me but built like a brick sh*thouse....substantially more muscular than me like. So all sorts of thoughts are going through your mind in the run up to a fight. Anyway I was sitting there and one of the lads who was doing corner duty, real quick witted guy, sound out, comes up to me and says....

"So the baby's due in January. That has to be a powerful motivator. You know....being able to protect your family and all. I suppose that's probably why you get in the ring." and he continues in this vein for about a minute.

Amazing. It was like the guy flicked a switch in my head. I won the fight comfortably. Probably my best performance to date even though it went the distance (I've stopped people before, but I just felt like I was on fire).

Growing older is a privelege denied to many, so enjoy each birthday as its comes along.

Actually, she works really well with boolean logic...

if (X && Y)
{
Z = true;
}
else
{
bold step = true;
}

I've learned that stuff in the past, is in the past for a reason.
Don't begrudge people for it, 'cause we've all grown up.
Family is the most important thing, including the extended family: friends.
Honesty is the best policy.

how to take care of others as well as myself.
i can take a kick to the head like noone else. (bosses words and i mean literally)
how important art is to me.

• That even though I look really like the maternal parent, this does not mean I am anything like her (I found out some stuff that was a real eye opener last week)

So far this year I have learned:

1) A little self-confidence goes a long, long way.

2) How much respect and love my friends have for me, and how incredibly loyal they really are.

3) Living your life for other people isn't a particularly good thing. Sometimes, its OK to do things for yourself without feeling selfish or greedy.

4) Travelling by yourself freakin' rocks! :pac:
