Same baby baptised twice (at least)

I heard this story last week... a priest in Donegal was asked by members of the travelling community, to do a christianing one morning at 11am, and a different priest was asked to do another christianing in a neighbouring town on the same day, except at 4pm. The second priest realised that he had other commitments and asked the first priest to cover for him, so he agreed to do both christianings.

On the day of the christianing, the family arrived and the baby was baptised in the first church at 11am. Then the priest made his way over to the second church at 4pm to do the other christianing, arrived into the church to find the same family all seated in the congregation, with the same baby that had just been baptised a few hours before.

Why were they doing this? answer: multiple birth certs, benefit fraud

Since when does the church issue birth certs? They just give you a baptismal cert. The birth cert I would assume would be handled in the registry office.

Maybe it was a really evil baby and it had lots of sins to cleanse, one baptism just isnt enough sometimes.

Everyone knows it's good luck to baptise a baby twice.

    It prevents colic.

But, uh, aren't birth certs and baptismal certs two different things?

True, but with home births maybe there is a chance you could use the baptismal cery to obtain a birth cert? Then claim benefits for both birth certs?

I will try and find links, it happened a few weeks ago. From what I heard, all that is needed to claim child benefit in Northern Ireland is a baptismal cert... I incorrectly stated that it was a birth cert on my original post. It is common enough in the uk to have multiple identites so as to defraud the social welfare. By the way.... what is a troll?

Actually the Traveller/Nigerian/Roma/Polish couple from Cork/Donegal/Limerick/Dublin are probably just going to use the extra baptismal cert to avail of two prams under the free pram/car/clothes/mobile/stuff scheme and then flog the spare one.

A strange coincidence, but when I heard it a couple of weeks ago, it was a Polish couple in Kerry.

....and after the Christening, the father fell asleep, only to wake up in an ice-cold bath with one of his kidneys missing:eek:

Sure you have to baptize them twice, once for the left ankle and once for the right, otherwise you will end up with a debilitating Achilles heel!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

clearly the reason for the 2 baptisms was that they werent sure who was the dad so the two families are going to share the baby like a condo in florida...

    Just plain wrong.

Firstly, 2 mins on the net would show that you need birth cert to claim child benefit. Secondly, multiple identities fraud is no more common in the UK than anywhere else. Thirdly, how can you have circa. 300 posts and not know what a troll is?

dont shoot the messenger... this story from an official working in the department of social welfare in Donegal, unless they picked it up without realising it was an urban legend...
Ive often seen the word 'troll' being bandied about on boards, I just never bothered finding out what it meant, but now that Im being accused of being one, Im interested. It seems like a childish expression, and no one has accurately explained what it means yet

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

Baptismal Certs are not recognised by any state agency AFAIK

Here are the rules for registering a birth - no mention of churches or baptisms

On the other hand there was a case last year where a Nigerian guy ran a fake marriage scam to allow Chinese people to gain residency in the EU. In return for money he would arrange civil marriages between Chinese men and local girls in Derry and Donegal. There was a documentary about this on the BBC last year. Some of the Derry girls were not bad looking if a little erm rough and many were already "known" to the police. But the Chinese guys only met their brides on the day of the wedding before moving on whereever they wanted to as newly minted EU citizens.

The funniest part of the whole process were the court appearances, most of which took place in Donegal.
Because they involved non-EU citizens a judge had to issue a license to allow the marriages to go ahead.
On one occasion the groom for the day couldn't make it and Mr Success, the organiser, was in a pickle as he didn't want to cancel the whole thing.
So he said "feck it anyway" (or the Nigerian equivalent) and went in himself as the groom.
Yes, this large African man impersonated a Chinese person in court and got away with it!
The BBC documentary didn't mention which judge was in attendance when this happened much to his relief I'm sure ...

Here is a link to the subsequent court case - see OP, a link with names and details to something that actually happened.

I'm sure there are people faking birth certs as well but arranging multiple baptism would seem to be a pretty stupid way to go about it ...

urban legends such as this are interesting because they reveal society's fears and prejudices. The fact that this story has been around the block in several situations before and is not properly sourced in indicates that it is false.

I know heaps of people that got baptized twice because they have now accepted the Roman Catholic baptism ritual as null and void.

How could our Lord possibly condem someone because they have not reached the age of reason and can't make their own mind on their faith .

A spoon full of water split over a babies head will only make the child's head wet.

Infant baptism is of the devil. It is not a Scriptural doctrine and of pagan origin. There is not one example in the Bible of one single baby being baptized.

It is also responsible for sending more people to hell than any other religious error.

Catholic Baptism is all about statistics and adding figures to membership of the Catholic Church.

On a lighter note this is Funny. Catholic Baptism gone wrong

    Going a bit offtopic here.
Our local town has a history club, it's fantastic. Well if you're into local history that is.

The local hospital was extending the carpark and discovered (well it was forgotten about over the last few decades) a burial ground that was used for children that were not baptized.
So children who would have died shortly after birth and they could not be buried on consecrated ground. Now I know the hospital has a chaplain and anyone can do a baptism in needs be but it didn't always happen

We visited it, it was all overgrown but you'd get a shiver just being there. :(

For the sake of a baptism ceremony, children had to be buried alone and away from the family plot.
That's pretty damn heartless from the church but the church sure likes to enforce their rules! Or did at least
