Could be wrong but I thought that picture was from a protest against an Orange order parade through dublin ???

The caption was photoshopped from 'No to Sectarian Parades' to say that instead ?

    Amazing thread.
Just read through the entire thing and the two above photos have actually scared me. You would easily say hello to photo number 1 if you saw him on the street. And his eyes in photo 2 are disturbing. Almost laughing at what he has done. Absolutly sickening.

The world was shocked to learn that Freddie Mercury had contracted AIDS, but even more shocking were the photographs of how badly he had been ravaged by that disease.

Vietcong "Revenge Squad Captain" being executed by officer. Photo doesnt tell you that the man being shot had executed dozens of unarmed civilians that morning.
Eddie Adams won a Pulitzer Prize for this in the late 60's
The revisionism surrounding this picture is sickening. The image does tell the whole story. It's a murdering fascist bastard doing what murdering fascist bastards do. The fact that the photographer subsequently turned out to be a right-wing imperialist nutjob with a hard-on for war crimes changes nothing.

One of the most remarkable Christmas-es happened not far from here. In the First Worldwar trenches near Ypres (Ieper) in West-Flanders, where warring troops had dug themselves in. With water often coming up to their waist, dug in mud and cold, the first Christmas of the War of the Trenches, was to be nothing but misery. Until a small miracle happened.

Both British and German warring parties, shooting to kill a few hours before, but softened by memories of loved ones, later met in no-men's land. It was one of the rare truces in a vicious war as can seen from a letter by Rifleman Graham Williams:.
"I was standing on the firestep, gazing out towards the German line and thinking what a very different sort of Christmas Eve this was from any I had experienced in the past...

There had been no shooting from either side since the sniper's shot that morning, which had killed a very popular young soldier in our company named Bassingham. But this was not at all unusual.

Then suddenly, lights began to appear along the German parapet, which were evidently Christmas trees, adorned with lighted candles, which burnt steadily in the still frosty air! Other sentries had, of course, seen the same thing, and quickly awoke those on duty, asleep in the shelters, to "come and see this thing, which had come to pass". Then our opponents began to sing "Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht".

This was actually the first time I heard this carol, which was not then so popular in this country as it has since become. They finished their carol and we thought that we ought to retaliate in some way, so we sang "The First Nowell".

And when we finished, they all began clapping; and then they struck up another favourite of theirs "O Tannenbaum". And so it went on. First the Germans would sing one of their carols and then we would sing one of ours, until we started up "O Come All Ye Faithful" the Germans immediately joined in singing the same hymn to the Latin words "Adeste Fidelis".

And I thought, well, this is really a most extraordinary thing - two nations both singing the same carol in the middle of a war."

    GERMANS ASK FOR TIPPERARY

And as I stood in wonder a rousing song came over to us – The Watch on the Rhine. Our boys answered with a cheer, while a neighbouring regiment sang lustily the National Anthem. Some were for shooting the lights away, but almost at the first shot there came a shout in really good English: “Stop shooting!”. Then began a series of answering shouts from trench to trench. It was incredible. “Halloo! Halloo! you English; we wish to speak.” And everyone began to speak at once. Some were rational, others the reverse to complimentary. Eventually some sort of order obtained, and lo! A party of our men got out from the trenches and invited the Germans to meet them half-way and talk. And there in the searchlight they stood, Englishman and German, chatting and smoking cigarettes together midway between the lines. A rousing cheer went up from a friend and foe alike. The group was too far away for me to hear what was said, but presently we heard a cheery “Good-night.” A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all,” with which the parties returned to their respective trenches. After this we remained the whole night through singing with the enemy song for song. “Give us Tipperary”, they cried. Whereupon an adjacent Irish regiment let loose a tremendous “whoop,” and complied with the request in a way as only Irishmen can.

    the_christmas_t.jpg

Picture above (from wikipedia) of a cross, left near Ypres in Belgium in 1999, to commemorate the site of the Christmas Truce in 1914. The text reads "1914, The Khaki Chum's Christmas Truce, 1999, 85 Years, Lest We Forget".

This is one instance from an event that shook the world. One of the few bits on sanity and humanity in an otherwise insane war.

Could someone please explain to me very simply what the story with this picture is?

Who is about to be killed? Who is shooter? And what has the photographer got to do with it?

I was vaguely aware of the photo before this thread, there has been a lot of conflicting opinions given so far about it.

It's an execution of a man who that morning had himself executed a lot of people.

    Isreal, 2000

The existence of the Israeli nuclear program is officially denied by the Israeli government for fear of mandatory U.S. trade and diplomatic sanctions that would be imposed if proof of the program were to become public. Israel has not signed the nuclear nonproliferation treaty, and the U.S. officially turns a blind eye to Israels weapons-of-mass-destruction -WMD- program. The release of this IKONOS image of the Israeli nuclear reactor at Dimona caused some embarrassment for both Israel and the U.S. The reactor is in the lower left of this image.

Couldn't agree more. The fact that the photographers biggest regret is that he actually took the photo and it ruined the Colonels life speaks volumes.

I know similar versions of this have been posted (or i think they have). I know that the universe is big... I've seen the charts showing how big our planet really is... but this... this just says so much more .

The vocals of Shane McGowan and photographs from Gallipoli make this an incredible video. Well worth watching all eight minutes of it.

    Truly heartbreaking stuff.

I think the most impressive bit about the deep field photo (one with all the galaxies) is that from earth, that bit of space is about the size of a pinhead being held at arms lenght. It's also a very dark bit of space that looked particularly uninteresting.

Spanish Coup d'Etat attempt in 1981

    Tejero_golpe.jpg

On February 23rd Antonio Tejero, a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Spanish Guardia Civil, entered the Spanish Parliament with approx. 200 armed soldiers in an attempted Coup d'Etat. Check out the youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XE5ov4ZzmVo which shows footage of the attempted Coup.

Pretty amazing that this happened only 28 years ago in a modern western country. Although Spain was pretty messed up following the death of Franco as many groups fought for power.

Assassination of King Alexander I of Yugoslavia in Marseille, France - October 1934.

    9202a8c04000641f8000000004a592fd?maxheight=510&mode=fit&maxwidth=510

Not only was it a significant event being the assassination of a ruling King but it was the first high profile assassination to be widely caught on film.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsQ1dHj-7Ec

It certainly filled the newsreels back in the day.

2 little freaks above have been given new identities and lives at the cost of the tax payer, as has the bitch Maxine Carr.
If I could find current pictures and addresses, I would publish them around the world.
Those 2 boys went out with the intention of torturing and killing.
