Gonna sign up for the marathon once I get the credit card cleared.

Haven't done any road mileage since the middle of September due to wedding planning/wedding/honeymoon/apathy because of all the doom and gloom and sh1te weather in the last 2 months.

Managed to keep up a barely acceptable level of fitness up with 2-3 gym sessions a week.

First run out today in the ice and fog - was togged out in gloves, hat, tights etc. so looked like a slightly out of shape Power Ranger. Chugged around my 7km route in 35 mins so a lot of work to do.

Have a marathon PB of 4hrs 2mins from a Dublin 3 years ago. Disappointed with that tbh but had to stop training a month before the race due to a soleus strain. Reckon I can go sub 3hrs 30 if I can stay injury free.

ok i do intend on doing the limerick marathon, 18wk training plan scheduled to start next week but New years in Prague kinda hindered things a little. back in gear from tomorrow I hope. i havent ran in a month now cos of PhD and then Christmas, a lil apprehensive of road conditions for running but sure will try to make a bash at it anyway

Good to hear you're getting back into it. Main road conditions are ok but paths were very dodgy over Christmas. They seem fine now as long as it stays dry.

Brilliant idea & if this gets off to a good start it could become one of Ireland's best events. Organisation seems efficient, price is reasonable, course seems decent so fingers crossed there will be a good sized entry. There's definitely a gap for an event like this in Limk. My only disappointment is that it's on exactly the same day as the Joey Hannon Tri, and quite a few the sizeable no. of tri participants would like to run one of the 3 races. Two of Limk's biggest participation events on the same day!

Hi, I am hoping to do this marathon but finding it difficult to get started training. Roads/footpaths are treacherous. Tried going out there but would have just hurt myself.
Should I just go with treadmill in the gym for time bring??

Also the training schedule on website suggests I do 10 miles next weekend as now into week 3!!
Should I start at week 1?? Or go with week 3?

    Thanks.

It's good to see the web site updated I hadn't checked it in a while. I also see yuo can defer your entry to next year if for some reaso you can't make race day.

Is anyone will to share a discount number with me????:D

Did someone mention that there is talk of Joey Hannon being moved to a different day of the weekend, so that ppl can attend both?

I'd start at week 1 if you're in doubt. If you feel up to it you could catch up later or use a different shorter programme. It depends a lot on how much of a running base you're coming from.

Campus run has been going on since last september. The guy that does it, derek, has run a few marathons. He also does the trak attack circuit classes there too - they are good.

What happens there?? do ye just run around in circles?? That indoor tarack is only 225 or 250 meters if I remeber correctly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 918 ✭✭✭MarieC

i used this track once for marathon training. did 84 laps to get in a 12miler!!! painful!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,145 ✭✭✭baza1976

You are a machine lady:eek:. Kinda like Ivan Drago in Rocky 4 when he is doing ndoor laps training.

Campus run is more suitable for first time marathonners really imho.

The circuits class is goof though if you are looking for a cross training session. 225m

@marie: you deserve an award for doing so many laps. The most i managed was 16 and i felt like castrating myself.

84 laps  I hope you were changing direction at regular intervals!

Nope - all in the same direction, non stop. It was in my pre-Boards AC days. I was young, foolish and naive....

re: Marie C - well done on the laps btw. I managed 35 laps on the indoor track last year and almost lost the will to live after it.

Just wondering what races people are targeting ahead of the Limerick Marathon? A pre-race Race Series a la the Dublin Marathon would be great but no sign of anything like this on the website.

I know the Dungarvan 10 miler is on at the end of this month but can't really justify a 4hr+ round trip to run a race I'm not fully prepared for.

It would be handy if the Mallow 10 is rescheduled for next month I guess but doesn't seem to be anything else local on apart maybe from the Adare 10k in early March?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 918 ✭✭✭MarieC

The only scheduled race I have planned is the Connemara Half on April 11th. This clashes with the scehduled 20miler in my training programme, but I hope to move that to earlier in the week and then connemara at the weekend.

The plassy 10k is usually on towards the end of March. Keep an eye out also for the Adare 10k. Only 10k races but sure better than nothing.

any sign of the organisers pushing this? I have mentioned this to a few people over the last number of weeks and most of them hadn't a clue about it.
They should know that a training schedule for a marathon could be a t least 20 weeks in most cases, so there should have been a big promotion of this event by now.

I would like to see a big crowd running this. I wonder if the organisers could give us a "hint" of how many people are registered to now and tell us there plans for promoting this event???

I agree, there should be a weekly thing in limerick leader or post. Im hoping promotioni will kick off massively around the place. Give them a tinkle at their offices and see if can get any info out of them! ;)

Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but there's an official race group on Facebook. It's updated regularly by the organisers and there seems to be a lot of people signed up to it. Can't post the link at the mo as Facebook is blocked at work.

The number of races has exploded in the last 18 months so there's a lot of competition out there to get noticed. I guess when they get a title sponsor (which would want to be sorted out soon in my opinion) they might pust it a bit more

I totally agree... what are these organisers doing.. i havent seen one poster or ad for it?? I was under the impression that no one had really heard about it!! So where did they get over a 1000 fans on FB from?? Has Kerry been forgetten (Real Sporting Capital ;)) or are there ads in Limerick or the rest of the country?

I am on the other hand not blocked at work from facebook... here is in link :)

I saw one or two articles in the local paper shortly after it was launced but its eerily quiet otherwise. Trying to round up a marathon crowd would suggest pushing the training schedules which is just tucked away in the website. Sponsorship may be the issue re lack of PR / Advertising?

I'm only doing the half, but realised something there that made me shudder.

The race is scheduled for the 2nd of May.

The Heineken Cup semi-finals are scheduled for the 1st/2nd of May. Without wanting to get ahead of ourselves, let's hope Munster make it that far.

Does anybody know what time the half-marathon will start on the Sunday morning?

I think it starts at 11 am

    The full starts around 9am.

    The 10k starts about 12 or 12.30

I dont know if they realise it or not but the organisers caught a lucky break here with Munster being drawn away in any potential Heineken Cup Semi final.

If they made the Semi and it was on in Dublin then anything up to 20K people would have left the region for the day, many of whom would be potential runners, volunteers, spectators

having said all that its quite possible Northampton will do a number on the in the QF

There was an article in this weeks local paper which was aimed at commencing training for the 10k/HM. I'm a bit happier having seen that as the silence was deafening.

The rugby match will hopefully be on the Sun afternoon which would make it a nice way to spend the day with your feet up watching it (or even at it if its in Thom Pk ;))!
