Great news for Limerick-based runners, the launch took place this morning of the Great Limerick Run.

A marathon, half-marathon and 10k run will take place on the May Bank Holiday Sunday next year. Entry price seems reasonable enough too as these things go.

I had heard about this last week but I was drunk and had no details to post. Great news for Limerick. With the winter run series and this event running is on the up here. Unfortunately its the same day as Joey Hannon as much as I'd love to run the inaugural event I'll be over at the Arena splashing about the pool

Seems from the elevation profile like it would be a pretty flat marathon? Is limerick generally a flat city?

How long before they get a solicitor's letter telling them to change the name of the race?

That being said - the course for the marathon and the half marathon look good, taking in all the highlights of Limerick...

See disclaimer they have on the site!!

    Great news,

I heard a rumor about this last Thursday was waiting to see if something popped up here about it.

IS there a limit on numbers.

All my bitching about no races in Limerick is paying off

    I saw that, gas!

Gringo78, Limerick is a reasonably flat city, the only nasty hill I see on that course is in Castletroy, along the Dublin Road between kilometres 10 and 11. The Half Marathon and 10k will avoid it.

Map for the marathon is not great to say the least... disappears into the city at 32 and pops out the other side at 35... maybe if was down in miles rather than Km it would be less cluttered

Awww I don't think I can fit in another marathon. I may head down for the half though if UL buys me a box of tiffen bars.

I heard a whisper about this last week but didn't believe it at the time. Excellent news, really, really good!

The last 10k of the marathon looks the same as the 10k route...if you click on the 10k route in the dropdown menu, you can see the twists and turns.

Think it's good planning to have this on the May bank holiday as well, guess it'll be incorporated as a significant part of the Riverfest festivities.

Hopefully, lots of runners will be encouraged to travel down, take part and stay in Limerick on the Saturday night...they might be able to form their own opinion about our city rather than listening to such luminaries as Donal McIntyre...

Hum, might look into doing the 10k as already signed up for Edinburgh marathon. The only close up of the course is through the 10k and it looks like there is alot of going over and back on yourself. If the marathon and half and 10k are all the same, that could be quiet messy, depending on what time they start.

But i'ld get to run by where i lived as a student on the Ennis Road (nasty little hill there for about 50 yards outside the Gaelic Grounds) so thats something.

I was told about this from a good source last week ans couldn't believe it. I will be 100% doing this.

RQ: 2 boxes of tiffins for the half, one for the 10k ad 4 boxes for the full - choice is yours m'lady!

Belfast marathon s on the same day no?

No that is on the Monday. This is on the Sunday. Might be a good one to do 2 in two days but registering for Belfast might be a problem.

Just found out about this marathon, I was turned off the thread by the "Great run" connection;) Might be an alternative to Belfast.

I googled it to find out more, this guys poem comes up:)

    Limerick-Marathon Entry

    Poem 170d date written 19/11/2009

Three elderly ladies from New York.
Entered a Marathon only to walk.
    Along with their pacemakers.
    We saw snails overtake them.
Because they just kept stopping to talk.

Jes I can't believe its scheduled for the same days as the Joey Hannon triathlon - what genius came up with that idea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,830 ✭✭✭catweazle

The guy should so a bit more research though

The Great Limerick Run is a sporting event that is unique to Ireland. It is the first ever time that a 10k, half marahon and full marathon have been held in the same location in the one day

Much as I complained about the prices didnt Galway just do one in October with all of the above

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,096 ✭✭✭--amadeus--

I'm gently working on MrsA doing the 10k as her first ever race...

DP, great news you've picked this. I can't offer a bed for teh night as our spare room is being turned into a gym/playroom but we'll have to meet up while you're over this side of the world, we can grab a couple of pints afterwards and you can tell me all about running sub 3 :)

Any chance SJ will tag along?

This could very well clash with a Heineken Cup semi final should Munster make it that far! If Munster played a semi in Dublin then half of Limerick mightn't be around for the marathon!

There are a limited number of bank holidays and there are lots of other Irish marathons to schedule around. The date clashes with non-running events but from a strictly marathon perspective it's actually a good one.

And we can either crib about it and watch from the sidelines or we can get behind it and try and make it work. Personally I'll be there, either running a distance or volunteering on the day.

I have the hotel booked for two nights already, and am just back in from the first training run for "all roads lead to Limerick". My wife went to Art College there many moons ago, and I have fond memories of getting the bus down each weekend to stay with her. Always liked Limerick, haven't been back in years, so looking forward to it.

Will deffo get together for a post race drink, might leave the ciggie out this time! No time predictions though;)

Fair point - I was talking about the Republic but there's always going to be a clash with something, I mean what other date would suit?

Damn you and your eagle eyes!

Fair play - about time Limerick got itself a marathon. Shame its so soon after Connemara, or I would be tempted!

This will be a fantastic event....imagine the buzz in the city that weekend...I believe the Joey Hannon is considering moving to Saturday or Monday. The Riverfest organisers are putting the fireworks on the Sunday night after the event, with the other events such as the currach races on Saturday or Monday as well as the street bar-b-q...all in all Limerick City has to be the place to be MAy BAnk Holiday weekend 2010

Is anyone concerned about the lack of information on the website? I mean in terms of chip timing, water stations and number collection/registration etc?I had planned on doing the Belfast marathon but heard the organisation was a shambles so decided that the Dusseldorf one might be best. Limerick would be great though and I would prefer to do another Irish one but I dont wanna experience what some people did in Belfast. Do we know anything about the organisers?Don't mean to be negative or pre-judge the event - just curious what other people thought?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8 Catchmeifucan

This is a major boost to Limerick....comparing to Galway doesn't really work..for instance the course in Galway is two laps of the same course..the Limerick event is a much bigger event and is aiming to be the biggest in the country...already the Limerick event has over 200 marathon runners registerd...I think from the Galway website something like 30 or so completed Galway...with over 200 already registered for the marathon in Limerick the overall numbers should be in the thousands

Van Bosch...fair point on the detail...I have it confirmed from the event that chip timing will be used at all the significant milestone..start, 10K, half, 30K and finish.
They are also looking at pacemakers for 3:15, 3:30, 3:45, 4:00 and 4:30.

These guys are not taking any shortcuts...this is a serious event with serious planning

water stations will be every three miles

local bands and musical entertainment are being encouraged to line the route for the carnival atmosphere.

this is a seriously well oranised event and will raise the bar and put Limerick on par or ahead of Dublin...guaranteed!

over 200 people already signeed up for the marathon...impressive in the first week!

Are the organisers of the Dingle Marathon in any way connected with the Limerick one? I know that the Dingle Marathon organisers were Limerick-based.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8 Catchmeifucan

No....these organisers are a much bigger operation and seperate staff will be employed. An office is already set-up in town, so this is a much difernt operation.

Are you involved in the organization?

Would love to do this but it's smack bang between Connemara and Edinburgh. Maybe 2011.

    Hi Catchmeifucan,

I've been trying to contact the office for a couple of days: email is returned as undeliverable, phones not answered. No particular problem with this (its early days yet!), and kudos to you (if you are involved) in setting up these races.

I'd be grateful if you could find out the answers to a couple of questions:
    1) Will the marathon be AIMS accredited?
    2) Will it be Jones Counter measured?

On question 1), its a longshot, but I'd like to get an entry time for NY, which will only accept times from AIMS accredited courses, and question 2) is obviously important for a serious marathon!

Best of luck with the race, I applaud your ambition, and look forward to running a PB in Limerick!

Catch - it sounds like you are deeply involved in teh organisation, I would appreciate it if you could clarify your relationship (there are strict rules about Shilling on here, people get site banned for talking up events without declaring that they are involved in organising it)

Assuming you are involved I'd be happy to swing whatever resources we have here behind an event like this, for example we put together pacers for Dublin on here. It will be great if this event takes off and assuming the organisers haven't bitten off more than they can chew...

Just got a reply to my email to the organizers; "We are currently seeking accreditation as you asked. We expect to have this in place for the run."

    Great news.

hi...yes I am helping with the organisation of the event...as you say its early days yet but important we get feedback from as many interested parties as possible.

a lot of good ideas have come from this site already

keep it positive and a great event will be delivered..

no worries..there will be a huge drive for volunteers...especially experienced runners who for one reason or another can't run the event....if anyone is interested they might keep this in mind

    I'm in :).

Decided to bump Connemara down to a half and give Limerick a lash.

Home territory so will be looking forward to maybe doing on course training runs. The map needs a bit of sorting out though as its hard to read. I might check out map my run. Looking forward to it already!

Right thats me signed up for it,my first 10k run so at least it'll give me something to focus for for the next few months. God help me:D

I'll be in training for Cork in June and the half marathon might suit me perfectly !!!!

    I think i'll do it.

    .

Ok this is a link to my attempt at the route on MapMyRun.

    http://www.mapmyrun.com/view_route?r=759125977551858577

Its not perfect but its pretty good. I couldn't see exactly what the route was within the city centre from the current map on the website but its my best guess so that the KM Markers tally pretty close. It was pretty head wrecking as the autoroute was cat and I had to manual input some of it. Also the section within UL is dodgy due to the lack of mapping and I'm guessing the Ballycummin section on most likely route. It's probably still very difficult to follow the route (unless you drew it :)) within the city but don't sweat it. There'll probably be a better official map in time.

On my lunchbreak so just decided to start writing out the template for the 18wk training programme for Limerick Marathon. If I do an 18wk programme, it starts the Week of Dec 28th!!!! Got an awful fright when I worked back - its scary to think that its that close almost.

I hope Im making sense...........its one of those days so apologies if Im not.

Making perfect sense - I had a 15 week programme starting the same week for the Connemarathon that I was just going to bump down. Is your programme from the web? An 18 week programme might suit better seeing as it ties in with the dates.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,197 ✭✭✭elvis jones

I'd love to see an 18 week program as well.

I'm aiming for Cork in June 2010 and will use the half marathon in Limerick as a warm up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 918 ✭✭✭MarieC

This is taken from the internet, its the hal higdon 1 and 2 plans. By selecting which one I want to use (change the 1 to a 2 in the top of the excel sheet 1), it pulls in the mileage for either programme.

This has aleady been minorly tweaked to incorporate the connemara half.

I like(love) excel so forgive me if spreadsheet seems anyway pedantic.

Will add more formulas/conditional formatting when time allows :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 998 ✭✭✭maddogcollins

Thanks for the above excel sheet MarieC. This is going to be my first marathon so it will be good to have a novice plan to follow.
