When I grow up...

When you're younger you think you can be anything you want :D

When i was younger there was loooooads of things i wanted to be. When i was 5 i wanted to be a ballet dancer :pac: i did ballet lessons and LOVED it :D but i had to give it up cause big school got in the way when i had to stay in school later :( by the age of 12 id pretty much decided i wanted to do something healing people, did a project on being a nurse, then was pretty sure i wanted to be a doctor. then the points put me off and ive ended up in computers :( (to be fair im pretty sure id have been useless with real life bloody and guts)

What did you want to be when you were younger? Did you grow up to be what you wanted to be? Are you still aiming for what you wanted to be or have you given up the dream & gone for something else? & Are you happy with how your career has ended up?

When I was younger I wanted to be a teacher... that's the only one I can remember! In secondary school I decided I wanted to be a secondary teacher, and took Arts as my degree - but I've ended up as a journalist, and I'm really glad :)

For as long as I could remember I wanted to be an archaeologist, even did my work experience with one twice, right up until May of leaving cert, then the same archaeologist I had worked for told me that there were very few jobs in it in Ireland and you work for sh*t money for years doing back breaking work until you start climbing the ladder.

Well, being utterly crushed, I started to look in other directions and went to a truly excellent guidance counselor who really knew her stuff, and changed to Applied Languages. Well some years later I am utterly delighted with my choice, and looking at the economony, so happy I didn't do archaeology! I am now well on my way to becoming an interpretor, so all's well that ends well really.

    A happy story! :)

I am a power ranger. I'm the green one with my sisters and some friends on Halloween 2008.

I was able to program the video from the age of 5 so knew I wanted to do something technical. Ended up with an electronic engineering degree and working in IT. So not too far off.

I think I wanted to be a scientist when I was growing up. I loved reading about how things are explained by science. I also wanted to go into space, as you do.

Bizarrely I didn't do science in school, ended up doing engineering in college and worked as an engineer since. I don't enjoy what I'm doing so I'm going to do the CAO in January and hopefully (if money allows) go back to college to study science next year.

I really wanted to be a vet when I was really small, then a vet brought me into the back and showed me something (I don't actually know what, whatever it was, it must have been bad enough for me to block it out of my memory) and I didn't want to be a vet any more. Then I wanted to be a teacher, but after going through school and seeing the abuse kids give to teachers for no real reason, I really don't want to any more. I'm doing maths now but I'm still not sure what I want to be. I'd love to be a mathematican and discover all sorts of things but I don't think I'm good enough for that. I suppose time will tell.

anything i wanted to be when i grew up turned out i wasn't any good at, anything i do work at now has totally taken me by surprise, couldn't have envisioned myself doing what i do/did

I wanted to be a architect, archaeologist and something to do with animals. I said to my Mam I wanted to be a vet but she said it would be more realistic for me to aim for veterinary nurse. So honest of her. :D

I have a Media degree and have worked in the Media Industry and I don't like it. Long hours, long spells of unemployment, people turn a blind eye to people using expletives, people treating others without respect due to the stress of the job and there's a lot of nepotism.

I'm thinking about going back to college next year but have no idea what I want to study.

I wanted to be a fashion designer, journalist, singer and have my own cosmetics company.

None of that's changed. Although, you can add fashion photographer, advertising executive and TV / Radio presenter to that list.

I just want to be creative :D

I wanted to be a soldier all my life. Still do, but since I am too blind, I can't be.

Now I just wanna be happy.

Planning on studying Psychology next year, because it is something I would be good at!

But in reality, I now don't know what career I want, just to be happy.

i always wanted to be an astronaut, still do, but it's not gonna happen now.

since i was 15 or 16, i wanted to be a doctor, and thankfully that dream came true.

in college i realised i wanted to be a psychiatrist, and thankfully again that dream came true.

so all in all, cant complain!

and if they ever want a shrink on the space station, i'll be first in teh queue!

I am extremely good at bluffing. I wouldn't put my own or anyone else's life in danger though just to fulfill a dream when I am this blind. :(

I rememeber even as a really small kid wanting to be in a rock and roll band or just be a hippy that toured with the band..

Other than that (In the real world) until I was about 14 I really wanted to go to River dance college

RDF medical was a bit of a joke to be honest, my eyesight is decent enough but I wear contacts for extra sharpness. When I went in for the eye-exam, guy just told me to read off the board. Didn't bother asking me to take out contacts or anything like that.

    A fireman.

Never focused on the fire-fighting part. Just sliding down a pole in the fire station and hanging gallantly out of a fire engine that passed loads of girls on the way to the fire.

My Dad had me as a real tomboy when I was a kid.(Still am :D) He taught me all the parts of the car engine when I was tiny! When I was about 5 my auntie saw me on my back under the coffee table messing with the underside. She asked what I was doing and I told her I was "fixing the car"!!

So I guess I was going to be this:

    istock-woman-mechanic.jpg

Then I wanted to be a primary school teacher. And I am so... Yay! :D

off topic, but this reminded me of the time i was going out with a fireman (he also worked some shifts as a security guard, i was going through a heroic-man-in-uniform phase ;)) and i used get such innunedo-laden comments about sliding down a fireman's pole...

Me too! My answer was always 'a witch'! I used to constantly draw pictures of witches and go around with a blanket on my head impersonating one, cackling maniacally. My granddad professed to be a little worried about me, despite then feeding my delusions by telling me that witches lived in every hedge that we passed while walking! ...Memories.

I now work in a boring Clerical/ Admin job, but my new ambition is to become a successful animator :D

When I was 13 I decided Id like to be a hairdresser, started it at 14 and hated it, then with time came to love it.

Always said Id have my salon by the time I was 30, 10 years on and have my salon a year and still love my job, couldnt imagine myself doing anything else :D

Honestly? As a kid I also wanted to be an astronaut. None of this near earth orbit guff either. I wanted to go to the moon.

Maybe it was an age thing. I can remember being kept up late to watch them leave the moon for the last time. I also remember crying my eyes out because they were leaving. But my dad said to not worry we would be going back soon. Sad it never happened. Luckily when I was 12ish I met one of the moon guys who was actually there. We had a really nice convo, mostly about how you can't easily tell distance up there as there are no reference points and no blurring of atmosphere. He also told me its not nearly as grey as it looks on film. Full of nuance in colour.

Only a handful of humans have stood outside and looked back. To do that again would be deeply moving and we should do that again. Robots while cheap and bloody brilliant in what they can tell us are not the same. To stand on Mars would be incredible. so like the earth and yet so unlike. I hope in my lifetime another human stands on another planet and I get to live that with them. My moneys on the Chinese lads and lasses to get to the moon anyway. Though the Russian buggers are mad and brilliant enough to surprise us all.

My dad was born in a time of biplanes yet he saw humans break the sound barrier, saw them stumble into space and saw humans stand on another world and even got to watch a launch of the space shuttle in florida(as did I:)). While we have amazing tech we take for granted there is often something of the humdrum about it nowadays. I wish for tech you can't quite believe in my lifetime. Then I'll never grow up as the child inside of me will be as excited as my dad was watching that stuff. Meh growing up is for the birds:D

I wanted to be a dole sponger and eat curry and drink beer all week til the next payday.
I've been thinking lately that maybe the teacher should've said something to my parents after I stood up in class and said that at 8 years old.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭iguana

Another one for an astronaut. Then I learned about countries, superpowers and who had space agencies and figured the odds of being an Irish astronaut were limited. But I did figure commercial space travel would be possible for the wealthy before I was too old to go and decided I needed to make enough money to comfortably afford a trip. Richard Branson seems intent on making the first half of my plan come true. Now all I need is a few spare 6 figure sums for the other half.:)

but my dad always told me that he and my mother stood out in the back garden waving up at the moon while teh lads were on it... and that they could see them waving back.

i was about 12 when i realised he was only messing :o (the fecker totally ruined the moon landings for me!)
