    Rural Wifi (3 network)

It's so inconsistent .. congestion is shocking

    http://www.speedtest.net/result/7445790379 at 11pm on a Wednesday night :/
    Currently getting ~150kb/s download ~3.5MB/s upload :/
    Yet you'll get 5.5MB/s download at 4am
Three destroyed Rural Wifi with € 20 a month pay as you go sim, I was with Rural Wifi, I left them recently, I complained to them and they said change your router settings to 3G only. as 4G is very congested

currently away in Spain but thought I'd do a speedtest. The interesting thing is the internet here feels alot faster than when I had 8 meg ADSL with 0.40 upload before I got FTTH back at home.

This is in a hotel so it's probably shared VDSL or shared FTTH between the rooms, The decent upload is making the internet feel alot more responsive than when I had ADSL.

The lower download indicates either performance loss on wifi or contention on the line.

That line is probably a lot bigger than what you see on the speedtest. Hence faster responses.

I'm with Digiweb too, been with them the last year and my broadband speed is terrible. I pay for up to a 100mb and never get more than 6 mb and my upload speed never goes over 1mb. This is what Iv had for the last year! When I rang them about it which is every few weeks I'm being told that the Junction box is over 2km away and they cant get my speed over 6mb! I live smack bang in the middle of Drumcondra and they cant provide more than 6mb. Does that sound right to anyone?

That is correct. If you're 2km from the cabinet, then you might even be on 4 Mbit/s. So you're lucky.

It's copper technology. It doesn't travel well. That's why it is "Up to".

The speedtest above is fibre .. all the way to the home. Different tech, but not available everywhere.

My mate lives two doors down from me and he's getting over 50mb speed, and the guy that lives in the flat above me in the same house is getting over 30 mb speed on a normal day. I was talking to an engineer from Eir in work the other day and he said I should be getting at least 30mg speed with the location I live. I find it hard to believe that everyone in Drumcondra is putting up with just 6mb broadband speed considering its more or less in the city center. And as far as I know I'm on a fiber line or that's what Digiweb has lead me to believe!

Calling that fibre is an insult. It's only fibre when it's fibre all the way in the door.

It's all Eir's fault for marketing VDSL as "eFibre" and a lot of other providers then using the same term. So yes ... you're on VDSL .. which is fibre to the cabinet.

But different premises as connected to different cabinets. If your line is to the exchange or a cabinet further away than your neighbors, then the only way of fixing it is to order a "new" line and hope it comes from the nearest cabinet. Then cancel off what you have afterwards.

    Previous provider Eir(com) VDSL
Not too bad - very reliable but speed is low, Fibre passing on the street but using a copper pair from the local exchange (about 2.5K away)

Just spent the last 20 minutes trying to order fibre broadband. I have an inactive landline but the rep wanted me to pay to get the landline active so as they could check the broadband speed. Makes no sense when I am looking for fibre to the home not a connection via my old landline

Best to order from a provider with Reps that understand the difference between these services.
    My recommendation is Airwire.

Thanks will do, I was hoping to avail of the free tablet and online discount but if the sales rep is anything to go by I will go elsewhere.

    Hi
I have Vod at Home Broadband. I live in rural area and have been getting bout 2.5MB per sec for the last 5-10 years. I know its low but its grand. I have had the odd problem as the cable are overhead wires and prone to problems from trees falling etc. My problem is that in the last 3 week, i have been getting a Wi Fi signal but wi fi does not work on my iphone, my wifes iphone or our ipad mini. These are the only devices connected and we are not big users.
I contacted vodafone. They sent out a technician. he said that I needed new router. i got one .same problem. Contacted Vodafone again. The guy on the phone was able to run a test to see what speed was coming to the modem and yes 2.5 mB were coming to the modem. When I turned off wi fi on both iphones and just left Wi Fi on the ipad and ran a speedtest, I got 2.5mb and the same when i ran a speedtest on an iphone without the 2 other devices on.
My question is Why now?... same speed coming in the last few years,, same amount of devices but i have different results..

Maybe something running in the background on one of the devices hogging the bandwidth.

Thanks. How would I figure out if there is something running in the background?

IIUC, you can connect any one device but not two or three .......... have you checked the router to see if Wifi connection is limited to one device ?

It is the same type of router as the one before so it should be able for multiple... is there a way of checking this?

It might be a user setting in the router ... is on the last one I had here.

ISP is Premier Broadband, located in Rural Laois. "superfast fiber like broadband speeds" is what it's advertised as lmao.

Is that on their Airjet product or the old legacy stuff ? I think they've gone through 3 iterations of gear .. UBNT, Cambrium and Radwin Jet. Only the last one would really do good speeds, if they have the bandwidth for it at the mast.

Pretty sure it's the airjet they're selling us, it's advertised all over the local place. They "upgraded" us there a few months back, also upping the cost, and since that the speeds have dropped if anything.
