I have only just noticed that on the Hologram on the front of my new 308 license that it is made up of the letter "S". Is this the famous "you are allowed a Silencer" S???????

Only seen it because I scaned the license to make laminated reprints of it to carry with me. I can't see the issued license lasting 3 years so that's kept in the gun safe.

I'm not sure if it was me that started the rumer of the "S" on the license..........

    BUT...............................

When I rang up the FPU, back in August, about the delay over getting a license for my 308. As ever we got to talk about other things and the nice officer on the other end said that the new licenses would have an "S" on the front of the license if permission for a Silencer had been granted.

But then again I have permissions for "Sound Suppressors" not for a Silencer or Moderator.:D:D:D:D

That'a all I know about it.

    well all
i got a phone call at 09.30 this morning from my FO sgt ,he had just come out of the supers office with the news that i was authorised to have not 1 but 2 moderators :D:D:D:D

I enquired if the super would be issuing me with a seperate premit for these and was told "that as i ticked the box for a silencer on my application and provided a valid reason for needing one my application in full was granted ,the moderator along with my 200 rds allocation are recorded on the system and there is no need to have a seperate permit and that was the old way of doing it "

so now i'm off shopping for a mod ,any one recomend a good one to suit a 6.6x55 and a .223 :)

    happy days................

I have the ASE Northstar Ultra @€;290 for my 223 and 308 and find it does the job. I bought it in the .30 calibre model to use on both guns.

+ 1 on that clivej. Have one each for the .308 and 30-06. Had to get two of them as the .308 is a 5/8 thread where the 30-06 is half inch. Great mods.

Hypothetical question; if you go into an Irish firearms dealer to buy a moderator, how is he/she going to know that you have approval for it, if you don't have it on your licence or have a separate authorisation letter from the station/district?
Have RFDs been advised that they can sell moderators freely? Or do they ring somewhere to check?

Any time I enquired and/or bought a mod from a dealer there was never any mention of license/permission letter/phone call, just pay your money.
The legality of it all comes into play AS SOON AS you take possession of the mod - thats when you need the authorisation to have it. But I was told from the dealers that I need permission to use the mod.

    END OF STORY.

Now what form that authorisation takes is a mater that is up to the individual and what sort of permission he may have been given OR NOT.

Even though I now have the correct written permissions for my 2 "Sound Supressers" as it is written on my 3 permissions, 2 mods for 3 guns, I still believe that if you ticked the box on the new firearms form and you are then GRANTED your license then by default you have your permission for your mods.

BUT thats only my opion. This needs clarification from someone and soon.

SPARKS how about a call to the FPU to clear this confusion up once and for all time?

clivej - I'm fully aware of the need for authorisation to possess a moderator. I was just unaware what the situation was with regard to the RFD selling one. I'm fairly sure I have seen threads where posters had stated that RFDs would not sell them a moderator without an authorisation.

It probably did happen. I have bought many mods over the years from a few different dealers and only one requested a permission letter before selling it. The others told me its my responsibility to get it authorised. The dealer that asked for the letter said the Super for the area was somewhat anti gun and pushed every detail of licenses, mod permits etc as described under the law. No reflection on the dealer but i never bought mods from him again. Pity too he had a good selection.

    Fat tony,
I was in the same situation last week, I phoned a local dealer, explained my situation and he was very happy to sell me a mod. Just pick up the phone and ring around. PM me if you get discouraged after the first calls.

on the garda website garda.ie the is a 46 page document guidelines for superintendents.
it states that permission for a mod must be printed on the firearm cert.
thats what i can make from it,worth checking out as we all know if you meet the wrong man and just have a verbal assurance and not a written one its very hard to fight your case

So from what you have been told, as above, the permission should be on the new firearm cert = the new license.

But its not on any as far as I can see.

i dont know anyone who has anything about a mod printed on their new licence, not an expert by any means but i have read this document several times and it can seem confusing at first as it deals in this section with both restricted and non restricted firearms, but it does clearly state that permission for a mod should be printed on the firearm cert.
maybe a call to the nargc or the pheonix park might clear this up once and for all

i've rang or spoken to 3 RFD'S since yesterday ,i told them what the super had said and they were all were more than happy to sell me a moderator on that basis ,i've been waiting since june for permission and have talked to the NARGC and they werent sure of the final arrangments either ,maybe by the next renewal in 3 years it might be clear:D

The same as the T8 - But about 2" shorter and a little lighter.
The ASE S5 @€;400 just screws on the end of the barrel.
