Thank you to the person who helped me last night !

Howdy AH,

Last night I was returning home from University in Cork to my parents house in Limerick.

I was getting the bus to see my family for the weekend . My feet touched the ground and I took a few steps out into the city to see if anyone from my family was there to pick me up. They weren't so I turned around to go back inside, taking my phone out to call one of them and see where they were.

At this a man appeared behind me, grabbed my phone from behind and as I turned around, pulled out a knife and threatened to stab me if I came any closer.

Luckily for me, there was a really nice guy just a few steps away , and, without a thought for his own health or well-being, he immediately got involved saying something like "What's going on here then?".

At this, the scumbag wielding the knife muttered some obscenities and told him to "mind his own business".

The guy immediately responded with "Look, I just want to see you do the right thing here - give him back the phone and be on your way". The scumbag responded violently to this, waving his knife around threateningly.

The guy then whispered to me "Look just keep him here for a minute and I'll get security." The scumbag heard this, and immediately changed his tune, allowing me to grab my phone from his smutty paw and swiftly make my departure.

In my haste to get away, and with all the adrenaline and feeling my heart beating in my chest, I never properly thanked the brave gentleman who helped me in this attack. So, to the man who was outside Limerick Train/Bus station at about 6pm yesterday, who said he was "used to dealing with stuff like this" I really do want to say thank you - I don't know whether I would be in hospital, robbed, or worse, had it not been for your help, so thank you from the bottom of my heart.

It just goes to show there are some really kind and brave people left in the world !

Fucking hell, that place is a nightmare. They located the train station in probably one of the scummiest areas of the city. I remember helping my sister arriving in there, you'd want to be weary, to say the least. One time I was early, hopped out of the car to wait for the train, and the place was deserted. The station was completely empty, and the platform, just the sound of a loud diesel engine from the train. It was unbelievably eerie. That alone was enough to get the adrenaline going. It'd serious want more security.

Security in Limerick is absolutely useless, they're always around when nothing's happening, but nowhere to be seen when something's going on- like when a weirdo threatened to ''kill me stone dead'' if I didn't give him a euro.

What's more, when I said I didn't have any money, he didn't kill me. Not only are they agressive, but they've got obvious commitment issues too.

No they didn't, the scummy area grew up around the train station because that is normally just what happens around train stations mate, it's a cause an effect devaluation of the local properity as it normally get dedicated to factories and storage which is normally the last area of land to be reclaimed by pretty much anyone, anywhere. Add in the fact that the early inhabitants of these area's are normally people who working the factories and the local industries ( which will then be supplanted as industrial and economic progression occurs ) and they are normally surrounded by people who were only ever gonna get poorer anyway. In the end, you end up with estates being dedicated to council houses for lower and no income families and the cyle becomes repetitive and depressing.

Glad to hear someone was willing to stick in for you a dicey situation there OP.

Some good people down in Limerick, although i am sure the deluge of "what do it expect it ****ing LIMERICK" by people who have never actually been there will be rather amusing.

I know what you mean, the garda presence in Limerick is asolutley dire. I've been driving around for about 3 months now with my wing mirrors hanging off and only got pulled over for it a few nights ago. Dire.

Guards are also afraid of approaching these scumbags half the time. And they make little effort in catching vandals who kick in wing mirrors.

Thing is, most people won't know wtf is going on. They will see a row and not know what is going on. They also don't know who is in the right or wrong. They cannot act on it, you know?

I have been in situations where I acted really well and stopped beatings, I have also been in situations where I had no idea wtf to do, so I just left it. Hard for some to decide what is the right and wrong thing to do, you know?

Not much in comparision but when driving from Cobh to Cork this morning the car I was in had a sudden flat tyre and within 40seconds of pulling ina car pulled over to help us,and he even called his friend out over too...Very nice guy.

Funny you mention it was Limerick bus station OP. In my one and only time there over the summe gone by, I had to transfer buses at the station and low and behold got robbed by a knife loving knacker (€5 was "all I had on me"). Security don't take any **** there though, wasted no time in chasing after him when I told them, didn't catch him though but were keen to stay alert from then.
Limerick bus station is a hotbed for robbing scum; to argue otherwise is trolling

Limerick Train Station is seriously dodgy these days. They badly need to increase the security there and stop the junkies from hanging around inside and outside the station. Two weeks ago I made the mistake of waiting outside for a lift and I had a rather intimidiating encounter with one of those lowlifes.

There was a junkie in his twenties running around the carpark harrassing people for money. He starts walking in my direction and pulled his hood up and started shouting - "WESTON YEAH WESTON YEAH". Got right in my face demanding money and cigs. I was with my mother and he said - "Give me some money so I can inject myself right" My mother was terrified, we just told him we didn't have anything and he kept it up. I think when we didn't let on that he was intimidating us he just lost interest then so he fcuked off over to some other people.

Lesson learned - Don't hang aound Limerick Train Station!
