think there has been a load of discussion on the points you make not being in the game, read back through the forum

I bought the game about 3 hours ago for €49.99 in symths on parnell street even though it cost €45 for the two console versions. Its been a pain in the arse so far with the install. Firstly it wanted to download the entire game from steam. I had to then tinker around pausing the updates, then trying to load the cd and reinstall etc. Eventually after 30mins i got it to install from the cd. 30mins for cd1 4gb, 30mins for cd2 which brought it to 8gb now im downloading the rest off steam which means 1hour on a 10mb ntl line. Wtf is with that, just have 3-4 installation cds. I can only imagine the frustration of someone on a slower connection. So it will take me nearly 3hours for a fcuking install!

    Not happy at all

rather good actually. maps are smaller. perfect size for 6v6 or 9v9

Hoooray. The smaller the better. Like Killhouse???

i guess i was just lucky with my install. took about 20mins from start to getting ingame. i dont know why u had to dl from steam corker. i had to dl a quick update which took less than a minute.

my only gripe with the game is that the IW.net is stupid in the way it picks hosts and usually ends up laggin the game untill it cops on and picks a better host. when it is running smoothly i have really enjoyed the game.

SP game rocked. there were a few in perfections and i also came across an unusual bug on one of the later levels which i had to restart in order to get through. in saying that i enjoyed every min of it. took me about 7-8 hours from start to finish on advanced.

I have both a router for wireless and a
modem. I have upnp enabled on the router but it still says my nat is tight.
Do I need to Change something on the modem too?
I googled but can't find an answer. I can't find anything about upnp in the modem settings.
I have a huawie modem and a netgear router and my os is xp.
    Thanks.

after spending the best of a day playing the multiplayer, i can now say its utter shyte for trying to play with friends. constant connection drops etc etc, just a complete pain in the hole. playing instant games by yourself is relatively hassle free, but playing with friends is a total waste of effort.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,562 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Pft, who wants to play with friends in a multiplayer game anyway

ye i totally agree with cherry. Its only a matter of time before they patch dedi's into this game...IWnet is ok but when a bad host is chosen(which has happened several times) the game is unplayable. Other than that its a really good game,it would be amazing with dedi's

and i got the lagometer up,and its a horrific site i must say, this is a screenshot of a pretty decent lagometer:O

I haven't got a clue myself, could explain pse mate

ok so basically the top blue line shows if your lagging via your pc(aka nothing to do with isp),the blue line will show yellow spikes if your lagging because of your pc

The bottom line shows your internet connection quality,if its full of green spikes, your lagging. If the green itself isnt flat,it means your ping isnt very good at all...so in this case the green is not flat which shows maybe a ping of over 100? and its spiking so your pretty much just lagging loads

this is what my cod4 looks like(not a very good screenshot but was the only one i could find:cool:

the smoother the lines the smoother the connection - yellow or red in the diagram is very bad news

as pabsoo said the green "line" represents a ping of at least over 100ms
ideally it should be a line and not a crazy-ass zig-zag :pac:

Yeah that meter doesnt look the best, will have to check to see what mines like.

You cant really notice it in the game in terms of moving around and other enemies movement though, but I havent yet been in a game with less than 4 greens bars.

Finished the campaign yesterday in just one 4-5 hour session, which shows how short it is.

The story is no where near as good as the first one, you know whats coming alot of the time. Still though id say its better than most fps games.

Multiplayer seems very messy. Although the max players is 9v9, it seems every where you turn theres either someone camping with there heartbeat monitor shooting you down as you go past or just explosions, shots and air support everywhere which ends up with everyone just running around in circles been shot down. To make it worse, things we got to hate and ban on dedicated servers like gren launchers and other perks are seemingly used alot more, could be that the game is just new though and their all testing out the new perks they get.

Still havent got to unlock S&D mode yet which should hopefully make it less messy as right now its just like a team FFA game all the time.

Going to spend a few hours now and hopefully unlock some s&d mode today.

Saw this over on nfohump forums - its worse then it looks!
About pings – The Sad Truth

    • Navigate to the folder: ‘program files\steam\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2\players’ and open the file config_mp.cfg

    • Change scoresping_interval from 100 to 20, and maxbars from 4 to 10 (10 is the max).

    • If I’m interpreting things correctly, this means that each of the 10 bars represents 20ms, with full green being 20ms or lower, and 1 red being 200ms or higher.

The truth? You might wanna pound a few beers before you read this:

    • The host is immediately obvious, he’s the guy with 0-20 ping (full green).
    • I usually connect with about 101-200+ms.
    • Most people are connected at 200+ms (3 or less bars on normal cfg settings).
    • On regular cfg settings, 4 bars means up to 0-100 ping, 3 bars up to 101-200, 2 bars up to 201-300, 1 bar is 301+.

    Background Information
    • Ping the measurement, in milliseconds, of how long it takes for your computer to send a signal to the host (shot fired) and receive a response (hit or miss).
    • Ping below 40ms is optimal. The higher past 0ms, the worse it is.
    • 100ms is considered very bad, as that means a 1/10th of a second delay between when you take an action and when you learn whether it accomplished the desired affect. Past 100ms it begins to get more and more noticeable.
    • The delay begins to get particularly noticeable around 150ms (1.5 tenths of a second delay).
    • NAZINet (formerly IWNet) is a P2P system, meaning you connect directly to someone’s home connection. This means you are practically guaranteed a ping greater than 100ms, unless you host. Conversely, the host is practically guaranteed a ping lower than 40ms.
    • P2P systems conceal the truth by showing bars instead of numbers. 4 bars means either you are host, or else mild fail. 3 bars or less is an epic fail.

just did this and I am getting 6 bars?

would that mean im getting ping 80-100ms?

10-6 leaves four and multiply by 20= 80-100ms

not sure im doing it right

and yeah the host becomes immediatly clear, huge advantage.

I picked this up yesterday, €49 in game, I have no idea why I paid that much for it. I forgot it ran under steam. I probably would have put off buying the game if I'd known it ran under that abomination. I was having problems with my internet so straight off the bat steam wouldn't install. It took ages but it did force me to go over my internet settings and I finally got my internet working. Then after installing, off a newly installed game steam still spend about 15 minutes updating itself. It was hours before I even got to begin installing the game.

I didn't get to play the game much as it was after 11 before it was fully installed and ready to go. The game runs very well, looks good but it's just more of the same. It's a well polished game but I can't believe people are so worked up over a game that really gives you very little and doesn't really bring anything new to the mix. It is classic COD frantic action, I suppose they shouldn't mess with a winning formula.

    Haven't played on line yet.

Im guessing if i picked this up in game etc i can install to my steam account?
Its €59.99 on steam but cheaper in stores.

i can confirm that you can enable lagometer in mw2

Steam/steamapps/common/call of duty modern warfare 2/players and open config_mp

and change seta drawLagometer "0" to 1 instead and voila.

now you can see for yourself how IW.net actually performs.

EDIT: I also see that maxclients is set at 18, and default is set at 12. Me thinks that these can be easily altered. It just seems to be COD4 in sheeps clothing.

Yeah thats true they didnt even rename the game executables from COD 4! Talk about lazy.

Not tried the multiplayer yet, im expecting it to be bad so at least i wont be disapointed. The whole non-dedicated sever thing is a bad idea, i signed the petition and all. I seen a advert for the game and i said to myself " ah **** it, ill get it".

How do they get away with charging more for download than hard copies?

Just out of curiosity I'm thinking about buying this also but how is the gameplay? Is it as bad as people make it out to be in all the "Omg WHAT? No Dedicated servers?" reviews and threads knocking around the net or is it actually fine as Infinity claimed it would be? I've read some people saying "yeh surprisingly it's fine" and some saying "I want to kill myself" so what's the final verdict after a week or so of release?

It'd be nice if someone could clarify this for me as it's the biggest concern I have about buying it really.

    Cheers

Some more tips to get better lag free games..
I've limited it to only search for games better than 125ms and it's a huge improvement. I also set packets to 40. I didn't bother with fps as I'm running 1920x1200 and getting about 90fps anyway.

    Valve\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Modern Warfare 2\players \config_mp.cfg

// Max amount of frames shown per second
    seta com_maxfps "85"

This will allow you to have higher fsp in the game. Change to i higher value then the default (85)

// Joins a server with maximum X amount of ping
    seta com_maxping "800"

No more hight ping server :)
IWNET forces you to join server with ping as high as 800 ms!!!! Change this to "200" and you will not be forced into server with higher ping then 200ms :)

// Max packets, by putting it higher your ping will be a lot more stable
    seta cl_maxpackets "30"

This setting is about the amount of packages sent to other clients. If you have high bandwidth you should set the default value to 100 or more = less laggy server (ONLY FOR PPL WITH GOOD UPLOAD SPEED)

If you play for a clan and want to play clan matches then its not really gonna fit that role. If you are in a clan who play for fun then it will work fine. If you are a public non clanned player then there is nothing wrong with the game at all. Few of us got together last night and IW.net worked fine tbh. Few little hiccups here and there but nothing major.

Thanks man! That's enough to make me go buy it. My PC should rape this game on full settings which is the main reason I want to buy and enjoy it :)

I'm too lazy to go into town so I think steam is my only option if the browser would ever work.

Ok how big is this game because I started download/installing with about 25 gigs of space on the drive and it's down to 11 gigs now at only 75% download complete?

Before installation it said I'd need around 4 gigs to install which was grand but this thing is taking the piss now. Can anyone shed light on the subject?

    Full install is 11Gb.
