    Im dissapointed.

granted lots of shooting lots of violance lots of everything but it masks it for something less then great.

First most fuastrating things is the covering system games like killzone2 gears of war, uncharted 2, even GTa 4. yet this does'nt at best i think its really very bassic just like all the cods with the big attention being online gaming as gamer and ive played my fair share of greats this doesnt sit that high in the gaming its popularity is clouded bye people going i can shoot people its got loads of wepons well great..

Its still lacking in anything spechil

Im really unimpressed bye it and the fact it cost me 54.99 just doubles the resent i have for the game so far....

Its fun but its not the best game ive ever played. I dont think any amount of online gaming could improve that.

I mean what are they thinking lets go with the method we went with last time because what it was easy?

They just tock an ok game and cleened up the rough edges.

If you ask me I havent fullly completed it yet but i dont think il be playing it all that much.

Oh and the airport mission is a bit questionable.

finished single player there and had a quick hour and a bit online.

Mostly I'm happy (I only payed 45 euro firstly thank you smyths!) with my purchase. Sure single player was quickly done away with traditionally, but I think that while they stuck with the if its not broke dont fix it route, they very much distilled the formula of cod4 took what worked out of that and improved on it. the result is a snapier set of missions with bigger focus on replayability (compared to cod4 where you would replay some missions but there are a few that are too much of a slog to go through with.) Here most of the levels had elements from the tanker/sniper/aces high missions of cod 4 in pretty much all of them. There are still frustrations, I personnally wouldnt put the cover system at the top of issues I want resolved, I think COD has a nicely tuned feel when in control that gives your character weight and opens a series of abilities always one button away. I think some form of cover system would highly likely muck that up.

Saying that though, there was one point in the game that had me swearing alot (though it could be done to my lack of cod gaming in a while) which was the first brazil level where I died ALOT because of the constent need to spot the enemy hidden among the roofs pelting me constantly with rifle rounds and rpgs.

Narrative is fine, it is very similar to cod4, like blockbusters the games have the same highs and lows in pacing even with different stories, but alot of what happens here is a bit too similar to cod4 the levels with the rangers are pretty much updated varients of the cod4 marine corp missions (escort a tank, assault a heavily armed complex, ride a copter in on a gunnery position, move through a series of locations clearing buildings and using toys to blow up vehicles.) just because they were similar doesnt mean its totally a bad thing, they improved alot on those varients in cod 4, I like that the vehicles that are manned tend to have a bit more variety to them then simple rail moments all the time.

Its not a quantem leap forward, but its all the shininess and fun of a good blockbuster.

    Though I must add
I missed the reason why they clicked shepard is a traitor I missed what was said in the chaos of running to the chopper just as you got shot, so I didnt know why he tried to have them killed. Also the scary russian bad guy didnt seem to get killed or else I missed that in the chaos in the junkyard. btw Price's return was awesome. And finally the red dawn moment was well timed cause even I said just before the title came up *WOLVERINES!*

Oh and the game has a real hard on for bruckheimer films, there were levels that felt like they came straight out of The Rock and Con Air.

On the multiplayer side of things, I'm getting the feeling that it will be a big improvement by little changes then anything drastic, moving abilities like last stand and martydom to deathstreaks is a great idea, it will stop them from spamming out the game. Moving shotguns to the secondary weapons and seriously nerfing them is interesting, though I though the issue of COD shotties was sorted with cod4. There's alot more to unlock and award players with and overall it feels like a much more customizable game.

I also like the new killspree call ins. the helicopter/harrier call in seems to have been rightly toned down, but the predator and sentry guns are pretty cool and dont feel overpowered. The one that caught my eye though was the radar blocking one and of course the gunship. I ended up on the game where a gunship was called and it does not seem to be too much of a dealbreaker it was easy enough to hide from it and we still won despite it being called in twice by the opposing team.

Overall I am enjoying the multiplayer more then I did with cod4. But to be honest I liked cod4, but it was never the top of my list as a favourite and I mostly played it because it was the game of choice among my friends list.

    Oh and one last question.

Is this the same graphics engine or a new one over cod4? Cause it looks fantastic, but not very different to cod4.g

Oh and the airport mission is a bit questionable.

well, they did ask you if you were sure you wanted to play it at the start of the game.

Well i finished SP, and i thought it was prety decent. Liked, no... LOVED killing civilians!!!

I actually really enjoyedthis game. And i love that they did not reinvented formula, but just took same thing polished it even more, and gave it to us!
And thx god no vechicles in multiplayer...

Now game was really hard on veteran settings, and i was playing it on PC, so aiming was free and easy. I cant imagine how much harder it should be on consoles!!!! unless it is just pure autoaim. It would be imposible to do all that stuff on controller, that i needed to do with mouse and keyboard!

for me, the game feels like quake wars enemy territory.
the guns, and the sounds of them just feel like a rip off.

Just played a few multiplayer games before work this morning - the brother bought it last night in HMV...

Must say I looked good - was very impressed.

One main feature was if the host left then the game would pause and find another (took about 10secs)... :)

Had no idea of the maps - played 3 of them this morning. Done pretty ok.

Weapons look interesting - will have to try more of them out...

After work Ill get stuck into single player mode... tick tock, tick tock!! :D

Went straight into MP and LOVE it.

the went really cheap for one of the maps.
the used that french town map,
the one with the bunkers and trenches.
    and jsut renamed it.
it is a good map though.

Right, after a few hours playing:

Overall, it's fantastic. Single player is astounding and way more gripping than WAW.

Multiplayer, for the most part, is great. The maps, however, are appalling. Very much aimed at campers and snipers, seemingly mainly modelled on Chinatown and Creek from Modern Warfare I. Very disappointing, hopefully they get some new map packs out asap. Perks, weapons etc are really great though, the ability to get rid of headsets and the switching of hosts really made it too.

i await the classic map pack, which will have all the favourites from cod4 thrown in with spruced up graphics.

emmmm i mainly bought it for the multiplayer tbh.... i was playin 4 up until yesterday.:D

and a covering system would ruin cod imo

switching hosts, i used to hate when hosts leave after 2 kills

    Wouldn't be surprised.

On another note, cheers IW for keeping the pathetic excuse of an online setup. More often than not today I've been dumped on to some team of retards who've half the score of their opponents and who've went on to get negative k:d in every successive game. Sick to see this bs still rearing it's ugly head.

Well I just walked in on an old captain Price and I was delighted to see the old bugger!!! :D

PLayed it first on console 360 - As far as the game and engine go its the same as MW and thats fair enough someone already said if it aint broke dont fix it! People who are talking of a covering system should realise that its never gonna be part of the cod series and It would ruin MW.

The story is a bit sketchy imo but I still like it aswel! This is prob cause I didn't have the really high expectations of some people and wasn't greatly let down when I seen that Soap was leading task force 141! I mean FFS There was no need to leave the SAS route! Besides that I Hated the american missons in MW and I am not really mad about them in this one either and thats mainly because there is very little substance to what they are doing.

The producers always make the american missions stupid see, shoot, kill type levels where its just mayhem with a small little objective that trys to give them purpose! However they make task force 141 missions a lot more substancial with a bit more purpose but still nowhere near the SAS missions in MW. I was hoping for a more solid plot but maybe my opinion will change when I finish the game! Some of us have to work after all :P:P:mad:

I think its good, but the first player seems abit messy at times.. Being shot at from all directions, lack of actual cover. Haven't tried multiplayer yet..

I also found the airport map, a little creepy.
Its weird because i've mowed down innocents in GTA for years, but this game seems so realistic

Yup my biggest complaint about this is the matchmaking, it's fcuking useless.

Tried for ages to get a game with a friend last night but it just wouldn't work, then we went our separate ways and I had to endure about 20 attempts to get into a game on my own

Well i don't usually play MP nothing has ever really grabbed me before, but i gotta say I'm loving MW2 MP.I'm not very good at it but none the less enjoying the **** out of it so much so that I haven't really played SP which is unheard of for me.I guess maybe it could be just my Noob MP status but i have no probs with the Maps or pairing.Try not to take it sooo seriously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 281 ✭✭supersaint3

actually could someone fill me in on the plot I thought it was really poorly developed? I have to say the plot confused the hell out of me, it wasn't explained well at all. And the SP was so short! but another mission ala the ghillie mission in MW1 would have been appreciated. OVer all I'm a little let down. And I agree with the previous poster, the multiplayer maps seem to be set up for the snipers and lurkers which isn't as much fun...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,519 ✭✭✭Oafley Jones

I've only played the first two missions in single player, but it seems to be the same formula to me; rush from trigger point to trigger point on safe path and get rid of respawning enemies (which I thought they got rid of).

It's always been about the multiplayer for me and I'm finding it a bit frantic, perhaps it's the fact I'm now more accustomed to slower pace of WAW. Enjoying it though - except Quarry screw that map.

I find it odd that IW didn't implement some of the - what I consider - improvements from WAW: custom loadouts being on the top of the screen, button for voting on skipping levels and few other bits and bobs.

I really like it! Thought it was a bit short though...?
I never found the 3rd person part that news was flying around about or the space mission? Also, the story wasn't finished the best. You didn't find out what happened to Makorev or did I just miss something? I liked the final scene when you killed shephard with the throwing knife!!! Originality to the max!!! They left it open for a third MW too:D

Just finished the single player, wow is all I can say, what a blast. Good story although as pointed out, there are a few holes, but hopefully that leaves it open to another sequel. Ending was pretty cool I have to say, when it was done I kind of sat there thinking "that was awesome".

    @jackobyte:
I dunno about campaign third person, but there's definitely MP third person and it's great craic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

The underbarrel one... :D No one was using it today weirdly enough :p

most people are using it because after 20 kills you unlock a underbarrel shotgun which people tell me is very good. Sadly I suck with the grenade launcher and have so far killed 2 people with it when I have used it...

    18 more to go

I've unlocked everything else for the scar already (FMJ, thermal, motion sensor etc)

    sort of in cod mw2

    Single player -

Excellent Gameplay yes but the actual storyline is a tad messed up. Main problem, well too short even after the feedback given by fans and gaming media. 4-5 Hours on Veteran for godness sake!

    Multiplayer -

I'm enjoying it.... but there are issues that are proving to be a real headache. Maps being 1 issue. There are some I do like but I reckon there are far more I dislike. Underpass, Wasteland, Rundown to name a few. Constantly been playing these ridiculous maps. Also find the size of some of the maps very off putting too. Some are pointlessly oversized. They'd suit Resistance with it's 60 player or whatever it is.

Last thing on MP is being paired with utter turds lol. Doing my head in yesterday morning. Lost 3 or 4 games on the trot despite overall top scoring by some distance, averaging 3:1 K/D. 30 kills usually.... around 20 more than the 2nd highest scorer on our team ffs :pac:

I really forward to the Classic Map Packs. Majority were very well designed.

I don't think the game has lived up to the hype to be honest. The single player campaign has it's moments but nothing spectacular in my opinion. More of the same with a bit of polish, not a bad thing I know but I was expecting more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

Finished it in a day, too short but loved it all the same, could have done with some more slower paced levels like Chernobyl in COD4, and the Rangers levels are all run n gun for the most part, I much prefer picking people off with McTavish and Price in the 141 levels, Spec Ops is fun as well, will get into MP once my xbox decides it wants to work with with my router again

MW1 was a summer blockbuster as directed by Steven Spielberg.
Intelligent, tense missions and a half decent storyline.

MW2 is a summer blockbuster as directed by Michael Bay. Subtlety and tension go out the window in favour of EXPLOSIONS AND NOISE and unintelligible story.

What really annoyed me about the game was the
bonus mission at the end? Seriously what the fcuk or am I missing something. It’s a museum where you shoot the exhibits? A HUGE letdown after the excitement of mile high previously
I can't wait to play though again and see more. I do agree with what was said earlier though with the lack of slow gillie suit style missions. ah well next time! and was it just me or was the story a bit lacking on explanation?
Price launching the nuke??? didn't figure out why he done that till about an hour ago

I still havent figured out most of the story after playing through, keep getting mixed up with the different names of the players and characters which isnt helping. Ill have to look it all up and then play through again.

To all those who like me were lost by the storyline
    Synopsis
    Characters
During the single-player campaign, the player controls 5 different characters from a first-person perspective. For much of the game the player assumes the role of Sergeant Gary "Roach" Sanderson, a member of an elite, multinational commando unit known as Task Force 141.[29] However, the player begins the game as Private Joseph Allen, a U.S. Army Ranger stationed in Afghanistan, who later goes undercover in Russia for the CIA, under the alias "Alexei Borodin". Private James Ramirez is a member of 1st Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment stationed in the United States, and serves as the player character during the defense of U.S east coast during the Russian invasion. The player character in Call of Duty 4, Sergeant "Soap" MacTavish, returns as a non-playable character for most of the game, but once again becomes the player character in the final three missions. In the 5 years since Call of Duty 4, he has promoted to captain in the Special Air Service. He now commands most of the Task Force operations in the field and is Sanderson's superior officer.[12] The player also briefly assumes control of an unnamed International Space Station astronaut during an EVA in the minute or so prior to the International Space Station being destroyed.[30]

Several non-playable characters also play prominent roles in the story. Captain MacTavish (In his NPC capacity, voiced by Kevin McKidd) serves as Roach's superior and mentor (much as Captain Price served as MacTavish's mentor in Call of Duty 4). Captain Price (voiced by Billy Murray) also returns from Call of Duty 4 to assist TF-141 after MacTavish, Roach, and other TF-141 members rescue him from his imprisonment in a Russian Gulag. The other primary member of the Task Force is Sergeant Simon Riley (voiced by Craig Fairbrass) [31], a mysterious character who is codenamed "Ghost" and always conceals his face with a balaclava.[32] Sergeant Foley (voiced by Keith David) is Joseph Allen's squad leader in Afghanistan, and later James Ramirez's squad leader in the United States. General Shepard (voiced by Lance Henriksen) is the commander of both TF-141 and the Army Rangers, but becomes the primary antagonist after he betrays the Task Force members near the end of the game. Vladimir Makarov, a former protégé of Imran Zakhaev (the chief antagonist from Call of Duty 4), serves as the primary antagonist throughout most of the story. [30]

    Plot

Riding a snowmobile in "Cliffhanger"Modern Warfare 2 is set five years after the conclusion of Call of Duty 4. Despite the efforts of the Marines and the SAS, the Ultranationalists seize control of Russia and declare Zakhaev a hero and martyr. Meanwhile, Vladimir Makarov, one of Zakhaev's former lieutenants, begins a reign of terror against Europe by staging numerous terror attacks.

The game begins in Afghanistan, where US Army Ranger Private Joseph Allen helps take an Afghan city from an army of militants. Impressed, General Shepherd recruits Allen as a CIA operative and places him in Makarov's organization as an undercover operative. Meanwhile, Soap and Roach infiltrate a Russian airbase to recover a lost ACS module. Makarov, however, is one step ahead; he kills Allen, exposes his identity as an American, and turns him into a scapegoat for a brutal terrorist attack on a Russian airport.

Angered by what they believe is an American-supported terrorist attack, Russia stages a surprise invasion of the United States East Coast. Private Ramirez and the US Army Rangers are called upon to defend Washington D.C. from the Russian attack. Meanwhile, Task Force 141 works on taking down Makarov. They go to Rio de Janeiro to chase leads on Makarov's contacts, but these turn out to be dead ends. As a result, Soap decides to rescue one of Makarov's most hated enemies from a Russian prison and use him as bait to draw him out. With assistance from the SEALS and Marines, Task Force 141 manages to free the prisoner, who is revealed to be Price. Price agrees to help them track down Makarov, but knows they must do something extreme to end the war. He temporarily goes rogue, hijacks a Russian nuclear submarine, and launches an ICBM at Washington D.C. However, Price rigs the warhead to explode in the upper atmosphere, which destroys the International Space Station but spares Washington. The resulting electromagnetic pulse cripples both the US and Russian forces in the city. Later, Ramirez and his squad discover that the Air Force will assume that D.C. is lost and carpet bomb the city. The only way to abort the operation is to set off green flares on the roof of the White House, which is under Russian control. Ramirez and his squad fight their way to the roof the building and manage to set off their flares in the nick of time, while green flares on the roofs of other D.C. landmarks signifies that the city remains firmly in American hands.

Narrowing down Makarov's hiding place to two separate locations, Task Force 141 decides to split up. Soap and Price go to the boneyards in Afghanistan, while Roach and Ghost raid Makarov's safehouse in the Caucasus Mountains. The latter obtain vital intelligence to put an end to him for good. However, General Shepherd betrays them and kills both Ghost and Roach. He intends to take advantage of the global crisis to turn himself into a global hero as well as write history how he sees fit, explaining that during the events that transpired five years ago, he lost 30,000 men while the world just stood idly by and did nothing. Price and Soap manage to escape Shepherd's ambush, and decide to take revenge on him in one final, bloody suicide mission. After a brutal fist-fight, Soap manages to kill Shepherd, but he and Price are seriously wounded in the process. Nikolai then arrives to extract them. Price warns Nikolai that they will be international fugitives for what they've done, but Nikolai insists he knows a safe place to take them.

Completely agree, the maps are, for the most part, utterly awful. However, they're obviously planning on bringing out more maps for the game, single player has some fantastic scenes that I'm sure will be converted really well into MP maps, however the ones we're currently stuck with are unbelievably sub-standard.
