not sure if this is the right place to post this.

just have a quick question, iv recently start going hunting with my neighbour, i was hoping on applying for a gun license, i was asking a friend today and he told me i havent a hope to getting a rifle license.. the reason being that the are next to impossible to get. my plan was to get a rifle to use for hunting and target shooting. can anyone give an opinion, surely if i was a member of a club it would be easier get the license

lots of horror stories doing the the rounds regarding issuance or otherwise of licences. only way you can be sure is to ask your super or FO. cant be given a licence without applying for it, as the man sez!!
someone will surely come up with some better advice for you
    best of luck anyways

Sounds like you have come to the right place. There are a lot of people here with 20+ years experience.

What do you hunt just out of interest?

Yes I believe they are very difficult to get. You can understand why though, they are serious weapons, and the bullet can go for a long long way. I wish you luck mate :)

A rifle is no harder to get than a shotgun, if you can tick the right boxes and supply a good reason for it!If you are in a club and have done a safety corse this would be a good start. But to start go and see you local FO!

    Hey jap gt,

I'm afraid your friend is needlessly scaring you. Rifles are as hard or easy to get as every other firearm (firearm, not weapon Back Stabbath)

As Paddy2008 stated once you have a "good reason" and the necessary experience a rifle is not hard to get. You can start with any calibre but most people would advise you start small (.22 say) and work your way up as your experience grows. Also a .22 would be near the bottom of the rifle "power scale" so would not come under quite as much scrutiny as a larger calibre.

Good reason covers a large number of things. For plinking or vermin (rabbits etc) a .22, .17 etc would suffice so trying to get a .270 for such uses would not happen. For deer hunting 22-250 or larger is needed as is a deer license so a .220 or .223 would not suffice. However a .220 or .223 would be perfect for foxes. My point is pick a rifle suitable to the main purpose/use you will have for it. Ranges are a good place to go and see other rifles for styles, fit, effectiveness etc. Also the owners will give you their knowledge and experience of the rifle and its performance.

First thing to do is pick your calibre, then your make and model then start getting permissions, memberships and hunting licenses (as needed) and send off your application. Don't rush into anything without talking to lads in the know first. Even the cheap rifles can turn expensive when all the accessories and gear have to be bought.

    Agree with what Ezri said.

As long as you have good reason to have a firearm you should apply for one.

Best one I heard yet was "You have to hold a shotgun for five years before you can even apply for a rifle".

    Nonsense.
