Are poker players the coolest people in the world?

Pighead is a magnificent indoor bowls player. Probably top hundred in north Co.Louth. He's won more trophies than you could shake a stick at and he's been called everything from a genius to a legend by his indoor bowling friends, peers and mother.

So what's his problem? Problem is, bowls isn't cool. It's a boring sport played by boring, stinking, old people in boring, stinking, community halls. Pighead is the youngest player by a good fifty years on most nights. Being number one in your chosen sport is generally a golden pass to a life of fame, riches and supermodels. But not bowls. Best Pighead can hope for is for old seventy five year old Agnes McNamara offering to clean and shine his prize winning balls for him. God has cursed this poster with a brilliant talent in a rubbish sport.

Why couldn't he have blessed him with some poker skills. What a game that seems to be. Go into the poker forum and you cannot but help be amazed by the coolness dripping from every thread. They have their own language as well. A language that makes even the losers sound cool.

If somebody loses all his money on the poker tables, he doesn't cry or stamp his feet. Instead he'll casually swagger into the BBV thread and say something like "Bad beat's tonight compradres, ended up busto" How cool does that sentence sound? It would make you almost want to lose all your money, just for the chance of being able to say busto. They have loads of other cool words like tilt, variance and flop but Pighead's not sure what these ones mean yet.

Three of the coolest things in the world are shades, Las Vegas and money. Poker has associations with all three. Coincidence? Doubtful.

Pighead thinks he's made a pretty strong case here for poker players being cool and he will be surprised if the poll doesn't reflect what he's saying. So are poker players cooler than you?

Of course they are. But then again most people are.

Surely Pighead's "busto" argument has convinced you that even the rubbish poker players are cool? Listen nuxx have you ever heard of the cool saying "It's the taking part that counts"? Well that applies in this case. Poker as a whole is cool. If you become involved you are automatically by association cool.

It's like leaving a party with the best loking girl in the room. It doesn't matter how badly you perform in the bedroom later on. You will still be cool in the eyes of all the jealous men who watched you stroll out that door with the beauty on your arm.

I used to play poker and I won more than I lost, not an awful lot but I didn't lose.

Anyway, it's a crap lifestyle unless you're making a good living from it.

You don't see many women at the tables. It's just mostly fat middle aged men.

What do you mean "Nope. Nuff' said"? That's not nearly 'Nuff said'!

Elaborate Biggins. Give Pighead reasons why it's not cool. If somebody asked you "Are you from Bangladesh?" You wouldn't say "Nope. Nuff said" You'd say something like "Nope. I'm from Ireland. Land of shoddy governments and shady politicians who care not a whit about the well being of it's citizens and who care only for themselves and their fat husbands and wives. A government who the Irish people deserve for stupidly re-electing them time and time again. A government who is more interested in cutting services and pensions than looking after it's own"

I take it that by admitting that you have ghey sex with them, you are agreeing with pighead's assertion?

I think they are nerdy losers.

You're very very wrong. They're all cool except that mocata fella. He's a bit of a third wheel really. Not sure how he ended up in the poker scene. He's no more a poker player than Pighead is. He's like the ugly one in Girls Aloud. Like Des O'Connor doing Countdown. Like Donnie Darko 2.

I can think of several words for poker players that wear sunglasses while playing. Cool isn't one of them.

Playing bowls and expecting coolness is -EV. In poker you can play a hand as well as it can be played practically kissing the Jack ( ) and you can still be beaten , this is called a COOLER. I'm not sure if it means the other guy is cooler than you or something even cooler than that.
Instead of lamenting your lack of coolness vis a vis the poker guys, why not do a Poll to see what is the Coolest sport/game. In fairness to bowls , there are more deaths in this game than most other sports. Usually people named Walter or Authur, in the easy chair by the coffee station shortly after a game.

I love how everyone who doesn't play these games always assumes that everyone who does loses huge amounts of money.

Listen up fatso and listen up good. Coolness is not measured by grammatical semantics. Coolness is being able to walk into a room wearing a pair of trousers that show off your hips and a shirt that is just the right tightness to be able to show off your toned masculine chest. Coolness isn't fat pants. Isn't wearing hawaiann shirts in an attempt to cover up your pudginess by trying to be zany. It definitely isn't having four doughnuts when one would suffice.

Pighead finds it very hard to believe you're a poker player fatguy. Just because you have a deck of cards doesn't mean you're the real deal. Maybe you're a wizard at "House" or "Old Maid" but not poker. You're like the guy who walks into a pool hall with his own cue but turns out to be rubbish. You're a false messiah fatguy. Not the real deal. A bad cover version. Not cool.

Didn't Bernard Dunne knock that guy out of some poker tournament :D

Sure the top 2-5% of players who hoover up everyone elses chips are cool but the other 95% of players are losers. The pictures with millions of dollars are from thousands of players who payed maybe €5000-10000 for entry then lost.

I find the game boring and tedious. Fun with friends drinking and shooting the **** but a career... no. Too cut throat
