I actually picked up a Dutch (!?) copy of this on DVD the other week, but my god, what an absolute masterpiece. To my mind, it is the very finest telling of the Jack The Ripper story ever put to screen, and Michael Caine is magnificent in it.

If you can find a copy, I'd heartily recommend it.

Excellent stuff. It was on the history channel a few years ago and I was just fascinated by it. Caine's performance is off the charts. I much preferred this to the abortion that was "From Hell."

"You are gonna bring out Jack the Ripper... TONIGHT!!!"

Yeah it was quite an tv film. It had a huge advertising campaign behind it when it came out. Think it came out on ITV first, and the fact it was released on the 100th year anniv. of the original killings helped fuel the hype.

But it was hype that was justified as it was/is a great watch.

There are different endings to different versions of it too with different people being suspected. Does the dvd have the different endings on it as an extra?

I taped this off De telly when it was on back in the early nineties. Was both terrified and fascinated by it, and Michael Caine was just brilliant. This, Ghostwatch (the ghost story disguised as a live broadcast with Parky that caused War Of The Worlds like panic when it aired on the Beeb in the 90's) and Twin Peaks were the only things that have ever frightened the bejeezus out of me. Glad to hear that it holds up, much like the other two mentioned.
