Really considering going back to this !

After going back to WoW and starting a new character again (1 - 77) I suddenly started to lose my will to live.

And after trying out Aion (1 - 32) Im preparing the rope to hang myself with at this stage...

And after hearing about the new COD: MW 2 Multiplayer fiasco ! ... I have the rope around my neck right now....

So anyone else in the World Of Darkfall ?

    Yeah.

I dunno when you last played it but a lot has happend.

Alliances and guilds are falling apart or quitting, new ones are forming out of the ashes, but in the end - there are less players.

The servers are in a terrible state atm, both NA and EU 1. Everyone is in limbo waiting for the expansion (due out the second week in November).
If you havent played in ages, I'd get into it now if I were you. Gives you plenty of time to catch up and get used to it again.
I dunno how advanced your char was but skillgains went turbo when you gain on mobs. So you would have good time to catch up if needed. Even find some guild and get nested in for your own benefit.

The game is still fun if you're into this type of MMO, the only problem is the imbalances in PvP coming to light as people reach new heights with their characters.
There are a lot of people who have hit 100 most or all of elemental magic schools and 1 or 2 melee masterys.

They have announced a couple of things in the new expansion which point to a total change in PvP.
Character specialisation will be in, in the form of certain traits like "Mage Killer - Grants more damage to people wielding staffs but only applies to Melee/Archery damage and blocks you from using Elemental magic.

Players wont be forced to choose a speciality but they reckon its gonna bring back more melee/archery fighting.

I personally feel they will add some limit to how Magic works atm.
    For example, you can currently have;
    Fire,
    Earth,
    Water,
    Air,
    Arcane,
    Necro,
and just cycle the highest damage Nukes/AoEs from each school while waiting for the other cooldowns to finish.
They have to add some global cooldown.
I remember in the early days, we were meant to be allowed 2 magic schools only, of a non conflicting type (i.e. Fire and Water would not be allowed )

Another thing to note at the moment, is the arrival of character transfers to the NA server for the american players. This will happen with the expansion most likely.
So we have all the players who are transferring, sitting in towns getting their chars maxxed as much as possible while selling off everything they own for gold and turning the gold into whatever materials they need (regs for example).

Like with the previous expansion, there will be a metric ****ton of players on the server, but it will probably decrease over time, like it did since the last expansion.
The only thing this time though, AV said they are releasing a boxed version of the game, aswell as an advertising campaign.

The game has improved so much and just keeps getting better. The only problem that everyone seems to have is - it takes them so fcking long to update stuff, its killing the game.

Ive read about the new expension ... really like the Local banking system. Less naked people running around with no risk ...all reward !

I think I stopped playing a couple of weeks after the first eurogamer review came out :P

I played it for about a month. I was in that big alliance that was set up to stop big alliances ruining the game [If the guy who sold that idea takes his head out of a computer he could be pretty dangerous.] That alliance kicked most of its member guilds during the time I played, including the one I was in, after accepting lots of gold from them to join.

I found that the game constantly seemed to promise that it was just about to get really fun. It never did get really fun though. What turned me off was seeing blood walls, cheating and wall-kicking, and the prevalent attitudes about it. They were either:
"Everyone does it so we have to do it to be competitive",
    or
"We would never do that people who do that are ruining the game and are boring and are...oh you saw me huh? Yeah well fnck off n00b everybody does it so we have to do it to be competitive"

Exploiters and griefer clans didn't totally ruin the game, even if they did ruin any sort of balance. Avoiding them and escaping them was good enough fun. It was all the hackers who totally ruined it. They not only removed the possibility for challenging them, but removed the possibility of evading or escaping them too. All that sort of thing sucked the fun out of it.

Yeh it was pretty annoying back then but all the legit players got the last laugh now with the really fast skillgain.

The last known bug/exploit was the Battlespike bug.

Equipping a heavy battlespike the split second after you fire a bow made you do up to 3 billion damage.

This was used to 1 shot monsters and bosses but it was fixed within 12 hours in a hotfix and people were banned and banks deleted.

I'm still playing this game and what can i say, its the most satisfying game i have ever played and the best game i have ever played.

Nothing can be the feeling of being chased across the map, sneaking up on some enemy killing mobs planning how your going to jump him or fighting outnumbered and winning.

The problem alot of people had with this game was the grind was very large to get your magic skills and melee skills up, but that the skill gains have been increased significantly in previous patches.

Another problem people had over the last few months was magic being overpowered and it was nearly impossible to beat a good mage with archery, but this problem has also been addressed significantly and even more bonus to archery are been implemented in the next expansion which is been released at the end of the month.

    new_elemental_bows.jpg

Anybody out there looking for a new mmo should really check this out, i would recommend buying after the expansion at the end of the month when there should be a large influx of new players into the game. It is also a great game to try for people who have never played mmo's before.

I will finish with some videos from the last few months of darkfall :D

Trilogy of videos by val roth, good insight into large scale sieges and high level magic
    [YT]XY5Wu1U3-ps[/YT]

Evaner mordred Solo clanless pk, one of the best solo pvp'ers in the game, shows a lot of player skill fighting outnumbered and various forms of combat in darkfall:
    http://www.megavideo.com/?v=2FI41YNG

Pvp clips by bizee bee, some nice use of archery in this video:

Ripper has a large showcase of videos on his youtube channel:
    http://www.youtube.com/user/themercsdotorg#p/u/4/yur-rP7tmvI

An interesting one shows the biggest ship craftable and the only known man-o-war to be created so far.

Another small scale pvp video by the clan viglante:

Video of the cairn alliance taking over a brigatine ship after a long sea battle:

My post from another forum a few days ago, it seems like a lot of people are trying to get back into the game and now or a forenight would probably be the best time. Enough time to get your skills up to par before expansion so you can forget about pve after and just straight pvp. My pc is broke atm and I miss playing it alot. Can't wait to get back into it =]

Now that the Darkfall developer credits have been posted, we thought it would be a good idea to write some short articles that will give you a better insight on what the developers are working on.

Obviously, some of these articles are bound to be more interesting than others, but all of them should give you a better idea of how the developers work and what they are focused on these days.

Also please keep in mind that these articles will not be replacing the official news and announcements that come straight from the developers so forgive us if we do not flesh out some subjects as much as we would like.

We will start off with Trond Evanger, a senior game designer at Aventurine. He's the person to talk to when it comes to skills, spells, item properties, and generally, the numbers behind Darkfall.

Trond had some very interesting things to talk about. First of all he told us that the first small steps towards racial differentiation are on their way and some racial skills will be introduced to the game with the upcoming expansion. For example, Orks will be dealing more damage with greataxes, humans will have longer nourishment duration from food and dwarves will be able to craft more durable armor.

We were also told that items will be receiving some adjustments to their stats so for example the heavier armors will be getting increased elemental protection, and weapons of high rank will be getting increased damage.

Crafting will also receive a bit more attention as the related skills will skill up faster when making higher rank items. This already happens for weapon crafting but now this will also apply to more crafting skills such as armor smithing and alchemy.

Lastly, Trond and Lars Erik have been working on a system that will apply a cool down to spells depending on their use. So, when casting a high damage AOE spell for example, all your AOE's will have a cool down applied. This, along with other changes, such as the mage killer shot, will help bring some much desired balance to the game.

Again, as things stand now, all these changes will be applied to the game with the Darkfall’s upcoming second Free Expansion.

That's it for today, please stay tuned for our next developer spotlight article.

This was posted today in the new spotlight forum. As I predicted just yesterday about cooldowns :O

I've been playing the game since release and it just keeps getting better. Old issues like bloodwalls, extremely hard mobs, wallhacking mobs with mounts, everyone running around naked etc have been fixed. It's a completely different game from WoW etc so if you want something different you should definately check it out.

Expansion is coming this week also and they have some good 6month sub plus game box deals at the moment.

Did they ban, or at least punish, the people who used macro's to get all their skills to max? And how long does it take to get your skills levelled at the moment? I wouldnt mind giving it a go again, but there were some massive problems with it at launch.

They don't ban people who macro, the gms kick people who are reported for unattended macroing. Macroing is pretty much non existant now though since you gain skills 3 times faster on mobs for melee and archery and 6 times faster on mobs for magic schools.

You can level your skills much quicker now than at release, you can actually see your skills progress now unlike the bottomless pool you were looking into before. The one thing you will need to spend time catching up on is your attributes especially vitality to raise your health as these still level at the same pace.

It turns out macroing was a waste of time after the last patch which gave 6x the gains on mobs as what we had previous xD
also nin2010 whats your ingame name and what clan you in? :)

Oh ya think i seen you on df forums, i had lots of fun with lux arcana at yere hamlet one day last week. I'm neilk bergane ingame in akatsuki now, previously in bad boys for life, the blackhand, a pair of knackers xD, euthanasia, pvp and now finally akatsuki. Most of the clans disbanded except for a pair of knackers which me and a friend made and pvp which me and some others left because arkillion was wrecking our brains. There is 3 irish people in akatsuki now, we have been together since b@d =]

Yeah as the lads said, all that was made redundant with the last expansion as everyone can be on a level playing field now.

Quite a few Irish about. I know of one who transferred and a couple of others still here.

Gonna be another explosion of activity after this expansion. Cant wait.

Ah nice one, you guys are really strong pvpers then. :)

We had lots of fun getting our asses handed to us by a few of those clans on different occasions. In particular I can think of when we were down in Rubyait as part of stasis and you were in B@D. Hehe, we aren't exactly power characters or the best pvpers but we do what we can since it's a mixed bunch in Lux. No other Irish in the clan except for me and only one other Irish guy in the whole unknown alliance actually afaik. It's mostly UK in Lux and the rest are from all around europe.

Having some problems with my NTL connection at the moment though, getting 250+ ping and lots of packet loss. Pretty irritating for pvp. :(

I had an engineer from NTL out today to look at the problem so hopefully when I get home from work I'll have a nice steady 60 ping again!

Any of you lot going mage killer or melee or you gonna stay magic or hybrid? I prefer archery and melee but after getting necro all the way to 85 I don't really want to block it off completely. Thinking I'll stay hybrid for a while at least...

I've been thinking about it, even though i had 100 fire way back before the easy magic patch, but i left the game for a while after that patch so didn't grind any schools to 100 even though i have 60 arcane, 50 necro, 80 earth xD. But theres no real nukes at them levels so i've been relying a lot on mounted combat to fight effectively against magic users. Our clan is mainly melee/archery so most of the people are going mage killer don't think kokane is though or our other Irish guy. I just have a lot more fun using melee/archery and winning at the moment =]

Hows it now anyway with the expansion ? I havnt resubbed yet ... more than likely I will resub in january for a few months :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 578 ✭✭✭neilk32

It's going great, the clan I'm in Akatsuki have captured the northern sea tower 3 times I think, I was only there the first times and got the final hit on it twice :D The first time was truly epic everybody turned up and we had 3 boats sunk and re-captured one but it was worth it since we got epic pvp and we capped it also :) I see new blood everyday in alfar race chat and there is definitly pvp to be had everywhere. Really enjoying the game at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 925 ✭✭✭KoKane

The Sea Towers fights are intense as ****.

Things are moving slowly on the siege front atm, since sieges were changed now and require siege equipment like cannons and warhulks.
Ships got a big buff again to their cannon damage but require a new item, black powder, to fire a shot.
So most guilds and alliances are quietly building up their weaponry at the moment... I know we certainly are.

PvP is completely balanced now compared to before, with people no longer being able to cycle all their high end nukes and AOEs

The trade route runs are providing lots of action now too. Villages are almost a guarantee of action too. Definitely a great (and overdue) expansion.

Hmm, tempted to resub. Might wait till after Christmas though.

    Resubbed for a month.
Just sorted out my hotbars and killed a few goblins last night. Also walked passed some big clan advertisement (ANG) just outside a starter city. Think this is one of the perks of holding the sea fortresses.

Interface is allot better... Chat seemed kinda dead but I did log on at 2am.
Going to start leveling up today.
    I left with 1.01 Pole Arm Mastery , 50ish 2 Handed Axes, 30ish Archery , 25 Fire Magic.

The EU1 Clan recruitment offical forum seems to be missing
Anyone recommend a cool bunch of guys to join up with ?

I sieged bloodscar last night, it will be vulnerable around 11:30 ish, we need all the help we can get xD Also drop the polearms and level up your 2h axes :D

The recruitment forum is still there..

    http://forums.darkfallonline.com/forumdisplay.php?f=11

Depends what you are looking to do with a clan. What style of player are you?

Name some clans you thought looked alright and we can let you know.

EDIT: Things are pretty dead late night now since the NA players left but that's been like that in every mmo I have played on EU servers. Peak times we have raids on the city we are living in all the time, including ship battles with neilk and kokanes clan Akatsuki attacking us. :D

Had some awesome pvp since they changed magic, it's really a lot of fun now for melee, archery or magic. Heavy armor is very useful now so you can be a really hard to take down melee if you want or you can wear mixed armor for max archery damage or mostly bone for max magic damage. Go with the two handed axes and archery for starters.

Check out these videos to help you out a bit.

You need to go to your account settings and tie in your game account with your forum account in order to see the subscriber only forums. I think thats why you couldnt see the recruitment forum.

Yeah the ANG thing depends on what guild owns what fortress. They took the fortresses last time at like 5am with little to no resistance as far as I know.

Not been on in a week or so now and wont be back till thursday probly.

Glad you resubbed. I would recommend you stick with archery and melee for now. If you dont have any elemental magics or arcane etc, then pick up Destroyer or some other Melee specialisations asap.

    What race are you?

Polarms had a speed nerf with the expansion (since they hit the damage cap almost naturally). They are still good in the right hands but most people will probly tell you to drop it. Infact, 95% of people I'd say have picked up a new melee skill because of the speed nerf + the knockback effect still being as annoying as before.
Its your highest skill though, so for PvP you might want to buy disabling blow for polarms, you can still use the starter polarm afaik. If you're Alfar you might wanna think twice about Greataxes. They have the shortest reach but arent totally redundant.. .they're just not the best choice and only having 50 means its not too late to switch to something else.

If you want a nice hint, you could try farm and train on Oak Lords. They might be the most profitable in the end.

They drop and skin for a lot of wood/timber + can drop steedgrass and can skin for Quality 1 Quartz. They might hit too hard depending on how done you are, but they are great.

Archery them from a distance dodging their shots as best you can and then finish off with melee if there is more than 2. If its just 1 spawned you should be able to solo it down. Even use Fire Transmuted weapons to speed it up.
They dont drop gold but the other stuff sells for it nicely. Quartz wood and timber is always in demand.

Im Ork. Was thinking about doing the Title quests are they any use ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 925 ✭✭✭KoKane

Well I guess so, since you're gonna be out killing some mobs anyhow, might aswell make it something from a title quest too.

I wish I was an ork :( The title quests are definitly worth it, one of the guys in my clan started them out a few days ago with 252 health he's now on the last part and he has 270 hp and nearly 50 polearm mastery from 1 so I think it's definitly worth it for less developed characters.

You should take all of the title quests except the wisdom ones. You can do the wisdom quests later on if you are in to crafting but when you are starting out it's not worth it as the stuff you craft costs more than the rewards atm.

Don't do the skeleton quest until you have two title quests asking you to kill skeletons. I think it's the second part of the dexterity quest that asks you to kill a bunch of skellies aswell.

You may aswell do the title quests as you'll be killing plenty of those mobs anyway starting out but try not to get too focused on quests. They are really just a side to the game and are mostly fluff. I still haven't done the majority of the quests I had when I started out playing.

Normally you should be aiming for a mob where you can level a particular skill quickly or one that drops something you need. Like if you want to level melee then make sure you are going to fight a mob you can melee down at a nice pace without getting your ass kicked every time. If you want to level archery then pick a mob that drops enough arrows so you don't have to buy them. The same goes for mobs that drops regs for magic.

If you want a mixed clan with both newbies and vets you can check out http://darkfall.luxarcana.org.uk and mention my IGN (Fionn).

    Good work to you sir.

Not in it at the moment, PC isn't up to scratch. Plan on getting back into it asap though. I will say this; It's good to know people in the game before going into it. It's a beast of a mistress to master on your own. I'd say hook up with some of the posters from here if you can. It is a harsh enviroment. If you're unafilliated, then your everybody's prey.

Hope you enjoy it man. In my opinion it's the #1 mmo out there. Your heart is in your mouth every combat situation you get into.

Same goes for me for any Irish newbies. Give me a tell on my IGN Fionn Lachlaenn and I'll help you out with any questions you have. The game seems very different in the beginning and you'll be right clicking to swivel your camera and end up with the UI on screen and spawning your mount a mile away from you when you first get it. The game doesn't really help you out with how to play it so you'll need to talk to people who have been playing a while to get your info.

    Wow I hope you're joking :)

    You dont have the game.

You buy the game and give AV the money.

    or

You buy the game giving AV the money and AV giving a % to the dude you bought it through.

You'd have to be seriously bitter to not want to choose that option, just because someone benefits from it :P

Glad you've joined. Anyone else joined without saying anything?

Getting Melee and Archery up would be my first recommendation, since the higher they are, the easier the mobs get to a certain extent.

When you get 50 melee and archery, try out oak lords if you can. And ALWAYs bring a skinning knife. Oak Lords are really profitable. I just melee them down in about 10-15 seconds. Need to do good dmg though and wear scale armour or better.

hahaha welcome to darkfall. I'd say he was pissed :D

Lesson in that too. Dont get tunnel vision just because someone is low on hp. And NPC zap towers rape your ass.

It's been a while for me, but I remember that while consciously I'm thinking living is more important than a kill, subconsciously and invariably in actual fact, a kill is greater than dying. Gear was so easy to come by if you are in any sort of decent Clan and dying so meaningless (other than the embarassment) that I took more risks than I should. The skill (and luck) being that you kill more than you die. But the wins where you could just have as easily lost if you didn't do something better than the other guy, were the most exhilarating. God I miss Darkfall. :)

I'm sensing a resub in my near future. :p

    Cool, you should.

Its a shame they released it so early. If it was only released now with its current form, it'd be doing far better. Most people are returning anyhow, its just slowly atm.
