Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The most controversial topic ever seen in C&H

Okay, bare with me. It's a question that I hope everyone can have a mature talk about. I've seen it on other forums and it's lasted for pages. I'd hope people wouldn't be idiots and get it locked. Please, don't...

Do you watch pornography/Do you feel pornography is acceptable in today's world?

Wow, shock! He asked that question. Yes, I did.

Now lets have a mature discussion.
    BAHAHAHAHAHAHA, get the pun?
    :pac:

    Discuss..

Also, I see now that it's not a very controversial topic. Just a title to get your attention. Well, it worked, didn't it? You're reading the topic. :pac:

EDIT: Here's my view/point on the subject, posted later on in the topic.

I feel that porn is okay in moderation and that the people who are using it do not abuse it and no that it's fake. Although, there should be an age law on it of 13/14 when the person gets proper sex education in school.

If people look at it once a day that's fine. But watching it for the sake of it, instead of TV or abusing it is wrong. People should know that most of it is fake and is not real i.e Mostly things won't happen like that.

Yes, it gives some people the wrong images about bodies and other things... But this is why people should be educated. Sex Ed. these days in schools are disgraceful. By the time you get real Sex Ed. in3 3rd year, you know everything already. You either learn it from Friends or Porn.

TL;DR: I feel it's acceptable in moderation and would be more acceptable if proper education was given earlier on in life.

    IBL...
Ah no, seriously, though, I would like to see some mature discussion on the topic. In a rush right now, but I will come back with a wall of text!

This hasn't been discussed before? Not even in the sex thread?
    Shocking.

    1. Yes!
    2. Of course!

I was watching the 96' episode of Reeling in the Years, when the government lifted the ban on Playboy magazines (goes to show how conservative and backward this country is) and there was 'moral' outrage, an interview with a woman who took calls at a rape crisis centre asking why would anyone buy these magazines? , basically comparing rape with reading an adult magazine, hardly a fair comparison is it?

    TL;DR Men are horndogs!

If anyone has any issues with posts on this forum, please utilise the "report post" function report.gif

Shouting "troll" is considered back-seat modding, which is against the charter.

I'm supposed to be taking a break from this site, but I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread. It remains open for now, but one of the other mods may wish to deal with it differently.

I wasnt calling him a troll, I was giving out about my precious search function.......

To be fair, when new users post any thing remotely off colour I tend to be suspicious.
No, not a troll. Just discuss it... Jeeze.. :S

Why dont you kick off the discussion then?

You've some funny definition of controversial, I thought it was going to be something shocking like "do you believe de gays are genetically inferior?"

    As you were.

  • Registered Users Posts: 215 ✭✭Baile an Locha

Yeah course i do. Random girl was going through my phone the other day, came across the stash, she said oh theres porn on your phone and just moved on, i was expecting the presumed girl expression..i.e "ewwww".
Shows that "porn" is getting more acceptable.

    Same here, how underwhelming.

Anyway, porn is far less controversial and I think that's pretty obvious. It's not uncommon for lads to talk and joke about it. It's abit more taboo with women though and you'd be hard pressed to find a man cracking a well-recieved porn joke infront of women.

Yeah I know plenty of girls who will admit to having watched porn.
    Lads talk about it openly

I don't see anything wrong with it; it's healthier to discuss things than keep them taboo.

Sure isn't **** good for you anyway ;)

I personally don't watch it. But then I don't see any problem with anyone watching it, it's not a big deal at all, definitely not controversial in my opinion. Each to their own and all that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,484 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

I actually don't watch it. Not really a conscientous decision, I rarely watch tv as it is, and if I do, its in work or early morning, so pornography isn't exactly thriving at those times. I wouldn't take the holier than thou path over people who watch it either, doesn't bother me that they do, or that I don't.

Funny story from a friend of mine the other day. He's just bought a new laptop and his family got connected to the internet for the first time last week. Anywho, the dude who came out to hook them up to the net fiddled around with my friend's laptop upstairs for a while to get everything set up ok, while the family were all downstairs...

Next day, my friend starts typing "youporn.com" into his browser for the first time and his history recognises it before he finishes typing. Oh, you filthy internet setter upper man... :pac:

Considering he hasn't even specified what he meant by "good stuff", I reckon he doesn't really know what he's talking about. This thread seems to be going nowhere. I'm going to give it 24 hours to see if discussion picks up. Otherwise, it will be locked for going so far off-topic.

Let's see some good debate people! :)

Yes I do think it's acceptable after a certain level of maturity. I mean there's nothing wrong with watching porn now and then, everyone has sexual needs and need to relieve it someway, but being addicted and watching nothing but porn and haivng a porn collection is pretty... weird.

I watch porn the odd time, sure I'm only human and can't see any harm in it. While I'm not afraid to admit watching it, I wouldn't be one to discuss it. I've always had the view that sex was a private thing and wouldn't feel comfortable discussing the details. That, and I just don't find it all that interesting.

I'm not fully in agreement that sex education should be a large part of teaching in school. I'll admit that school does play a large part in social development but I feel as though most of that responsibility falls on the parents with respect to their children's well-being. I'd worry about schools losing focus on academics due to having pressure on them to focus too much on social well-being which never seemed like the sort of thing that could be 'taught'.

But of course, that'd be in an ideal situation. In reality, some parents either try to avoid dealing with it, are not well-informed themselves or their children don't feel comfortable asking them. Which is a bit crap or something, I don't know. :pac:
