sure doesnt xbox and ps3 use p2p and specific ports to run game lobbies and play online games? seems like a big flaw there lol

No, both the Xbox and Ps3 pick one of the players to host the game on their connection, usually the one with the highest upload.

Peer to peer downloading is a little different and the reason they don't allow it is it allows a small amount of users to hog all the bandwidth and make the network laggy for everyone with lots of connections

Some PSN games such as Metal Gear Solid 4 use peer to peer to share the load of downloading multiplayer updates though.

    WARNING WARNING WARNING!!!!!!!

    Do not get this product.

Imagine are impossible to deal with. They over charged me on my first bill to the tune of 188 euro. I brought this to their attention last wensday but have not got my money back yet. They use traffic shaping software which makes it impossible to get any good speeds while downloading into a bit torrent client. It's a joke of a service really. I have been trying to get them to remove their gear from my house for the last week or so.

    DON'T TOUCH THIS !!!!!!!

    Go with Eircom.

It also appears like they are shapping traffic going to certain speedtest sites.

If I do a speedtest on their speedtest site or on speedtest.net, it returns close to 8-9Mbps. If I do it to another speedtest site (not posting it here as it may suddenly get 9Mbps too but it is a Dublin server one that I had no problems with when I was with Digiweb Metro which was a similar speed service), I see I'm getting about 3Mbps.

This is also reflected in downloads from Steam which were previously running at 900Kbps but run at about 300kbps at the moment. This is when I run my speedtests too (after stopping the downloads obviously).

There are 2 people using my wireless connection too so this could be a factor and I'll keep an eye on it and post back if I'm sure it is Imagine.

You'll get a better idea of actual speed by going to a site like Heanet's mirror site, selecting one of the large ISO image files, and downloading that using a download manager/accelerator.

Make sure anyone else is either disconnected or not doing anything online when you run the test. Give it a couple of minutes to settle in, then monitor the speed you're getting. Keep monitoring for as long as you like, though a couple of minutes should be more than enough time to give you the answer you're looking for. May not be the answer you want, but it will at least be real.

It's imagine.I have cancelled the monthly direct debit so the ball is back in their court now.

Imagine's customer service leaves alot to be desired.

My girlfriend's parents are signed up with them and were recently overcharged too and got nowhere with them on the phone.

I called NTL the other day to get a billing issue sorted and they had it corrected within 10 minutes... I was on hold for one minute. This is NTL we're talking about... I'm sure we've all dealt with them before.

My experience with Imagine so far has been going around and around in circles with people who couldn't sound less interested if they tried. Once they have you're money prepair to be taken for a ride whilst you wait for it back.

    yes from speedtest.net

    765171100.png

downloading ubuntu from their website for a few minutes and max speed is 400KB/s which is in line with other speedtest I did.

Interestingly enough, with their weird blocks they do, last.fm can't even scrobble :-/

Steam not working all evening until just after I did speedtest on speedtest.net which is interesting. It stopped working almost immediately after but I've not been able to get it online again by running speedtest again. I only noticed because my friends list activated and popped up who was online.

Pingtest.net is failing altogether. Don't know why, must be using something Imagine block as part of the test as I can do everything fine but that. Tried in IE and Opera browsers.

even tho magnets speed test is on the same system as speedtest (see the oakia logo) it seems to be far more accurate in my experience :P

It's funny thebman. I'm living Kingsbury and the highest results I have ever got from speedtest.net have been around 80 ms and 4.5 mbps.

I have been onto them since wensday about being over charged and allI keep getting is " it'll be in your account tommorow " . Recieved a letter off them in the post yesterday saying that the money would be back in my account on Friday. I have cancelled the direct debit and asked Imagine to collect their stuff from my house once the money is back in my account. As far as I'm concerned I can't trust them with my bank account details.

Got the money I was owed off them after a week of chasing them. Still getting rid though.

Just had wimax installed in maynooth, found out the obvious negative aspects as soon as i got it, no access to router (policed internet!) cant change it so it would work on my home network (local address of 192.168.15.1 cant be changed) (im not going to rebuild my home network just to suit a router i cant access) no control of firewall, no control of anything! speed of around 5mb.... so the outcome is the guy who just installed it is on his way back over to pick it up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,820 ✭✭✭smelly sock

Spot on. Don't take any crap off them. I was allowed access to my router etc but I'm getting rid of it. IMO their an impossible crowd to deal with. I have sent them numerous emails with not one answered. PS The vans their techs drive look stupid aswell!!

is it worth to get this just for browsing n watchin movies online (no xbox live/gaming) and for basic phone line?
5mbps speed looks good. not sure what will be difference with router access

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 998 ✭✭✭zekiel

For the average person who has no intention of doing anything with the connection other than browsing, then yeh I guess it would be ok.

As for watching movies, it depends on the streaming service (if thats how your watching them) as the service might require some ports configured or other special requirements which in that case will require you to ring imagine and ask them to configure it... which is rediculous, because you might find yourself in a man in the middle situation passing one support request from one company to the next, if ya see what i mean.

The phone service, well I'd say it will work fine as one reason I'm guessing they dont want to give out access to the router is that QOS is setup so that voice gets priority (could be why people are only getting 5mb! the rest of prioritized probably) so people cant complain about voice quality while downloading and also that they dont want you using other phone services like blueface, because if you have access to the router you can just change over the SIP settings and off you go.

Imagine must have seriously deep pockets to pay for the support staff needed cater for the crazy amount of support phone calls they are going to receive....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,820 ✭✭✭smelly sock

It's brutal for streaming. Forever buffering etc. It's way to inconsistent aswell. Go with Eircom for the extra few quid. At least they don't throttle or manage traffic across their network to a degree that you can only get max of 10 kbps when downloading into a torrent. Their a shocking bad company to deal with aswell. They double charged me for my first bill. It took me 6 days to get the money back. Now they want a 100 euro cancellation fee because I don't trust them with my back account details.

    one more question -
if you have access to the control panel of the router, can you configure your sip phone on this?
i use the cheap voip services, is it possible to configure these blueface kind of sip providers with the motorola devices?

How did they allow you access to the router? Can you post the settings they gave you?

I didnt get access myself, but an educated guess would leave me to believe that yes you can change the sip setting within the router if you had access to it. enabling you to use blueface or any other service.

has anyone configured their own sip provider on imagine? can u pls post the settings?

i asked the eingineer when he was out to leave passwords etc there and he did. if you ring Imagine they should forward ports on the router for yo. My speeds have improved over the weekend. Im now getting 7mbps with 60 ms ping consistently.

TF2 has been working non-stop for me for past week or so. I didn't have to open any ports so I'm guessing they opened ports across network for Steam as they probably had more than one request.

Should add their DNS is poor at resolving addresses and since the router is locked down you have no choice.

Course You do, add Opendns to each of Your devices and it'll bypass the router setting

I have to set static IP's for that. Not doing that, Imagine can fix thier issues or I'll keep reporting it broke here.

I had OpenDNS settings on my router but Imagine want my router to be passive and for my devices to get IP addresses from their modem/router which is locked down so it would have to be done at device level which is just not good enough.

They should fix their DNS, how many other customers will not know how to change DNS or even realise the type of delays they'll see because of DNS problems.

I've already seen Imagine fans around my estate for last week or so and I Imagine many of these users will be disappointed and not even know why.

BTW, You don't neeed to set static ip's, You can just set static dns. I agree with the rest of what You've said, that they should fix it, but this gets it working better.

i would say by setting static DNS, you may have to change it when you are connected to a different ISP(office). correct me

Consider yourself corrected bittihuduga! The beauty of OpenDNS (aside from speed, some phishing/malware/family protection; and all for free) is that it works with almost all ISPs, and certainly all the main national/nearly-national Irish ISPs.
