What do you mean by "crap internet"? Is it poor download speed? The wimax antennae in my area is approx 100 metres across the road so signal won't be a problem for me IF I decide to sign up. Anyways, I couldn't see it being any worse than the absolutely crap "3MB" broadband (34kb per second speed at best!) I have from Perlico/Vodafone, not to mention their even worse customer service.

Wired BB will almost always give you a better, more reliable service with much higher caps.

BTW just because you are close to the aerial, doesn't mean you'll get a good connection. In fact often with wireless, if you are very close, you will get a very bad signal.

Aye - that is especially noticable in 3g - I get a better service witha 47% signal than i do with a 70% in my area - wimax im not too sure about but its all wireless which makes it very unreliable and very dependant on alot of factors where as the a landline is subject to less variables and is more reliable becuase of that - also latency is always going to be higher on a wireless connection so your gaming and VOIP will suffer as well

I got imagine wimax installed (in dublin) about 3 wks ago, last thursday the Thomson router more or less packed in after a few days of dropping signal on and off, contacted support spent 3 hours on phone and in the end to be told the router may just be rubbish.......... have to use router from previous provider until new one arrives. speeds vary one minute from 54 mbps to a brutal 1.0 mbps - W.T.F is going on?????

Forget what they told you on the support line that sounds like wifi interference to me.

Do you have anything else in your house that might be opperating on the 2.4Ghz band like a cordless telephone or wireless video sender by any chance?

Out of interest has anyone got Wimax and an Xbox like I do?
The issue I have is that my NAT is rated as moderate, have been on the phone to them a good few times, issue still persists and promised call backs are not happening either.
So I'm asking has anyone got Wimax, an xbox, and an open NAT?

Enable UPnP on the router and on your Xbox. The xbox should then forward the ports it needs to pass through NAT properly.

As far as i know you have to enable UPnP (or DMZ) on the router, the xbox will have no such option. Apart from setting a specific Ip address for it on the LAN.
The problem I'm having is that Imagine don't allow me to configure anything on my own network, as they have the Motorola Wimax CPE modem router locked down so only they can remotely access it to change configs.

Yes this is the case, they want me to contact them to unblock ports for steam on their router and setup a static forward to an IP Address that I should specify for my laptop.

However my laptop is a laptop and used in multiple locations so I don't want to lock it down to a static IP/network settings or have to constantly flick between the two as I move between different locations.

It seems like a poor solution. I think they should just open the ports and let people use their own firewalls.

On with tech support now again to try and resolve this. I was trying my best to ask them for the Motorola Wimax CPE password but they said "It's not allowed". Seriously annoying that I've had to call them up as many times as I have to try and get my Xbox working correctly with their Wimax when it worked fine with the previous Breeze service I was forced to switch from. How long should it take to set up a DMZ, forwarded ports and UPnP!? I'd do it in 1 minute flat!
I've been trying to resolve it since February over the phone...

I have been in constant contact with imagine support arguing with them over blocking ports. They have told me that they do not block ports!! lies lies lies.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,820 ✭✭✭smelly sock

    Getting rid asap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,294 ✭✭✭MrVestek

They don't block ports however if they are refusing you access to the Motorola CPE then it's possible that the ports are blocked because they haven't been forwarded correctly.

    Technically they are correct.

They are blocking ports alright. I have access to the Router. I got the password when the techs installed. Try using the default password : motorola.

They changed my default password.... So it's not motorola.

And yes they do throttle P2P, no argument. Heard it from tech support themselves.

Unreal. I could use P2P and filesharing (for open source apps) fine during the cooling off period. Now a big fat ZILCH!!! Can't wait until UPC upgrade my estate.

Same here, I think they only updated the routers to block P2P recently when it started effecting network performance.

I'm gaming away fine now in Team Fortress 2 now that P2P is blocked and nobody in my house is trying to use torrents anymore. When my housemate was using torrents, it seemed to get about 8 connections then stop but hold on to 8 connections. This means sometimes torrents work and not because it depends on if those 8 peers are restricting upload or not.

So he has been able to get over 100KB/s on torrents but usually was getting about 0-10KB/s.

When he did this, my TF2 connection would drop after a few minutes. Is it possible they are limiting the number of requests/connections they handle from each modem and that when it hits the max number, it is randomly picking requests/connections not to process?

It could be something else I guess but that is the behavior I'm seeing on my connection. I wouldn't know much about the way ISP's can shape traffic though.

Imagine "support" told me that they do not use traffice shaping software (lie) on their network. It's sly that they would allow you to use P2P during the cooling off period but then block it immediately when the cooling off period finishes. This is what happend to me. I was happy with the product but now I'm not.

Friends of mine work for Imagine. Believe me they traffic shape.

do ISPs have the right to be so restrictive since p2p is used for so much more than just illegal downloading?

    Yes they can throttle P2P.

Reason they may give whether you believe them to be legitimate or not is that they want to share the bandwidth among all their users evenly. An unmonitored torrent can clock up a huge amount of connections which can limit other users experience of the product. Can you imagine (heh get it?) what it would be like gaming on a 7mb connection with all other users in the contention using full speed torrents? It would be a mess. Fair usage is in most ISP t&c's and it applies to P2P most definitely.

A lot of people say P2P torrents aren't just for illegal downloading but if you look at the most popular torrents on Isohunt or Demonoid or whatever and you'll see every single one is an illegal download. It's why anyone shouting about torrents and saying they don't use it to download illegally draw a lot of skepticism from me.

stick with ntl id say - they are also upgrading their network at the mo to fibre optic so their network is going to get a hell of alot better - they will lead the way in speed and broadband quality once their upgrade is complete - i wish id access to those speeds lol

Imagine block ports and throttle P2P (torrents).

Get rid before cooling off period expires. They will work occasionally but not worth the hassle.

Imagine double charged me for the installation and first months bill to the tune of 188 euro!! Tyring to get the money back off them since wednesday but no luck. They told me that it states in their T+C's that they do not support P2P or filesharing. Doesn't say that anywhere in their T+C's. So they have violated their contract right? If I have known this before I got it I never would have went ahead with it.

Don't know its been crap in Maynooth area for past few days with ping times all over the place and DNS crapping out left right and centre, usually having to request pages twice in order to get them.

Seemed to coincide with Imagine vans all over the estate doing installs the past couple of days too so hopefully my service hasn't been borked by some interference or something.

I have also noticed that speedtest.net always returns fast speeds and straight away after each other I ran speedtests on speedtest.net and IrishISPtest.ie and was getting 300kbps. Wouldn't be too bad if pings weren't going up to well over 200ms at times at the moment.

Do you know if they block Skype aswell? I just applied for it, but after reading this thread I have strong doubts. They also said that the mast in Maynooth is on the Straffan rd on top of the ESB building, not sure where that is...

sure doesnt xbox and ps3 use p2p and specific ports to run game lobbies and play online games? seems like a big flaw there lol
